    Remember, the important thing is that Head Writer on The Golden Girls Christopher Lloyd (not to be confused with the actor of the same name) was a Co-Creator and Producer of "Modern Family" that is why the writing on both shows were Emmy Award winning.

    With all due respect it seems implied that the success came down to one man when in reality the brilliant writer and not to mention creator of the Golden Girls Susan Harris had a major part to play in its success while Christopher Lloyd only wrote for the first 4 seasons I believe.

  • @Ameslan1

    @Ameslan1

    @@robertovz5895 Susan Harris was the creator of The Golden Girls as well as Soap and Benson so Susan was the main person at the top of course. But yes Christopher Lloyd wrote many episodes and later Co-Created Modern Family that Office Bloke Daz reacts to. That was the point i was making. In actuality The Golden Girls had a whole team of writers and Christopher Lloyd was among them.

    Bea who played Dorothy had previously starred in a successful series as title character Maude, and Rue who plays Blanche was her neighbor in that series. Betty White who plays Rose had also previously starred in the series Mama's Family with Rue. The initial plan was for Betty to play Blanche and Rue to play Rose, but they decided to switch them because Betty had previously played a man hungry Sue Ann Nivens in the Mary Tyler Moore show and Rue's character on Maude tended to be a little ditzy like Rose so they switched up their types for this series and it is hard to imagine it any other way. Estelle who played Dorothy's mother Sophia wasn't really planned as a lead but she worked so well in the part, she became the 4th lead. All of these talented ladies won Emmys for their portrayals during the series run.

    The first time I ever saw Bea Arthur (Dorothy) was on 'All In The Family'. She did a few guest appearances as Edith Bunker's cousin Maude. She and Archie Bunker would do this kind of sniping at each other constantly. Maude became a much loved character because she gave Archie back exactly what he sent her way. She was one of the few people that could actually leave him speechless. I loved seeing them together on screen. Maude was so loved by 'All In The Family' fans that they created a show about her. She lived with her second, ? Or third?, husband and her recently divorced daughter and her young grandson. She had a housekeeper named Florida ( who went on to have her own show called ' Good Times', which made a star of Jimmy Walker) who also spoke her mind. I am not sure how many of these different shows have content online, but you if enjoy 'Golden Girls' you will enjoy them as well. All these shows have the quick jabs and retorts in them as well. They were all classic US Tv from the 70s and 80s.

    The song was originally written and performed by Andrew Gold, who had a big hit with it in 1978. You can find it on youtube. It’s a much better song than when it was re-recorded and shortened for “The Golden Girls” in 1985. The producers of The Golden Girls felt the song fitted better with a woman singing it, because the show was about the friendship of the four women. I loved Andrew Gold’s version in the 70’s, and when I saw the first episode of The Golden Girls when it premiered in September of 1985 and the theme song started, I was shocked and went “wait a minute....I know this song!”.

    Here's something that will blow your mind: Rue McCalanahan, who played Blanche, was in her 50s! When the show debuted, she was 51. Bea Arthur (Dorthy) and Betty White (Rose) were both 61. Estelle Getty, the actress who played the cranky Sophia, mother to Dorthy, was in real life a year younger than Bea Arthur! There's a phenomenon in sociology where people look younger or older than we perceive them to be. I wish I could think of the name of it. When we look back at people or actors from other times when they were young and try to guess their age, it can be surprising when we find out how old they actually are. Just take any yearbook from someone from, say, my generation (Gen-X) or my mom's generation (boomer) and compare what a 17-year-old then looks like to what a 17-year-old looks like now and it's actually pretty striking to note the visual difference in how we perceive the ages.

    As others have said, the show is set in Miami but the women come from all over the USA. Dorothy has a scabrous east coast sense of humour. I have friends like that from New York who remind me of her. It’s very well cast and well written with better put downs than I’ve ever heard in British sitcoms and with none of the soft-edged earnestness from which many US sitcoms suffer. It was extremely popular on both sides of the Atlantic in the late 1980s.

    Best show ever, loved watching these ladies growing up. Still watch reruns. True lose on all their passing. Dorthy always reminded me of my Aunt who is still with us and makes me laugh.

    They’re in their 50s and aren’t retired. Dorothy is a substitute teacher, Rose is a grief counselor, and Blanche works in a museum. They all came to Miami for a fresh start after their husbands’ died (except Stan, who cheated on Dorothy and they divorced).

    So many good sitcoms from the 80's and 90's, and none of them could be made today where no one can be made fun of or offended.

    Correct. It's a shame that no one can express a sense of humor without being in danger of being cancelled, fired, offended, triggered, etc. We wonder why there are so many w mental health issues....for one, people don't/can't laugh anymore. What a terrible thing that is....

    The show first aired in 1985, I think. Bea and Betty would have been 63, Estella would have been 62. Making Stan and Rue, the youngest at 52 and 51. You have to factor in that beauty, health, and cosmetics have come a very long way in the last 30 years, plus stage makeup and fashion. There's something to be said about actors and actresses who age gracefully.
