I purchased a 2020 rubicon with the manual as well. Main factor was the price. $2000 less than the automatic rubicon’s and I really like rowing my own gears. For myself, a manual just adds to the overall Jeep experience.

Grew up in the 80's and a Jeep or sports car that was not a manual....was not a Jeep or sports car! :) Back then, it materially mattered with performance and gas mileage. Both were far superior in a manual. I know that has obviously changed with todays computer programming, huge number of gears, etc in the automatic. So a little like driven mad.....its almost like a nostalgia thing for me. And I like having the control and more interaction with a manual. Currently looking at a 2021 Willys and Rubicon. I filtered out consideration for any automatic. Can't wait to get my Wrangler in the coming days.

Can’t imagine buying a Jeep without a manual transmission. My first Jeep, a new CJ7 I bought in 1986 had the heaviest clutch peddle I’ve ever felt. That T5 was a brute. Certainly built up my calf muscle. It was super fun to drive. Now I’m waiting for my JL to be delivered. It’s not a CJ but the clutch is smooth and easy to use.

My first few cars were manuals, but a late 1970s rental with an automatic changed all that. My dad, on the other hand, despised automatics when he rented a car now and then. I am addicted to ACC anytime I'm on a freeway and it gives me great gas mileage on long drives, typically 29 MPG. Had ACC in my last 3 Jeeps (2 Cherokee Trailhawks, previously, now a 2020 2-door Wrangler Rubicon hardtop with headliner). Recently noted I got 19.8 MPG (Jeep display) on a 108.6-mile 4x4 off road exploration covering a 5,400' elevation climb and descent.

My JLU is manual and has EVERY option except for the Remote Start/Stop. Contradicting your statement, it does have adaptive cruise control, front and rear crash detection, and blind spot monitor. Our manual vehicles will appreciate in value when the market switches to only automatic. It’s slowly going that way.

The biggest downside I've experienced as a driver with a standard transmission is that my friends and partner cannot drive a standard transmission, so when we go on road trips I'm either the only driver or we end up taking their car. My current partner has no interested in learning to drive standard, but I keep telling him if we're either on a road trip or if I'm injured, I'd like to know he can actually drive my car if needed.

My girlfriend doesn't wanna learn how to drive standard either. I have a Honda Civic Si and those cars only come with the standard transmission. I've tried teaching her how to drive it and she absolutely refuses to learn. She knows I'll never buy an automatic again as long as I can still find standard vehicles so she will have to buy her own car. She also refuses to learn standard in my car (if she ever does decide to learn how to drive it) because of how much power my car has.

Great analysis of the pros and cons of having a manual transmission as opposed to automatic. In favor of manual, I would add safety. With manual you have to be constantly aware of vehicle speed, traffic and road conditions to put it into the right gear. After a while, you do all these calculations almost subconsciously, but you are still much in control of every aspect of the car’s movement. Also, you engage both hands, forcing you to forego cell phones and other distractions. On the down side, if someone at home doesn’t drive manual, you’re stuck driving all the time...:)

I own a 2020 6 speed manual Rubi 4 door and definitely prefer it over the auto. My only criticism is gears 3-6 are too tall (ratios) so I have to be in second gear a lot around town. On the highway, I hardly ever get into 6th unless it’s flat and speed is 65+ mph. Would prefer gears 1-4 to be closer ratios. But shifter and clutch are super nice, almost sports car-like (nothing like a JK)

Great points on the manual, but I ordered my 2022 (still awaiting delivery) with the manual and it does have adaptive cruise control. I assumed it worked just like the automatic except you may have downshift to pass a vehicle in front of you. I guess it may be more of a lead vehicle distance control than an actual adaptive cruise control.

I have had many manual trans vehicles over the years & when I was younger I thought they all were a BLAST to drive because of that feature alone . But as I got older , the up & down shifting in city driving became not so fun . With an automatic it is a nice convenience to be able to stop a a drive through & leave drinking a beverage without worrying about shifting gears . Plus on a road trip if the driver / owner wants to switch off with the passenger & that passenger can't drive a standard then it's all up to the driver to stay behind the wheel for the duration of the trip . I own a 2001 Jeep TJ with 5spd ONLY because the automatics back in those Jeeps were inferior to the 5 spd manual . But that is no longer the case with the improvement with the automatics th3se days .

Hello Dakota, I hope you are doing great... Please, I'd like to make a consultation to you... I just bought a 2 door manual transmission Rubicon (just like yours but on billet silver ) and I need to ask you something: When I shift from 1st to 2nd, at the very moment that the clutch is "grabbing the gear" I hear a clank noise coming apparently from the transmission, I have to take the clutch really slow to avoid this clank (this slows the speed), I also like to add that I read on the manual the following: "NOTE: A certain amount of noise from the transmission is normal. This noise can be most notice- able when the vehicle is idling in NEUTRAL with the clutch engaged (clutch pedal released), but it may also be heard when driving. The noise may also be more noticeable when the trans- mission is warm. This noise is normal and is not an indication of a problem with your clutch or transmission." Upon your experience is this clank really normal ?, thank you in advance...

  • @drivenmad2089

    @drivenmad2089

From what it sounds like it’s basically the clank you can hear if you get if the clutch to quickly and not in the gas soon enough. I’ve heard it before in my Jeep and in my parents JK. More so in the jk. And know that I’m used to the clutch and everything in mine I hardly ever hear it. But seems super normal to me. Now if it seems like it’s getting louder after while then it might need to get checked out

Also, sometimes an auto is better at slow ascents, especially when a spotter is needed. That last statement isn't from experience, but from reading articles on 4 wheeling at Moab. One less known disadvantage of a Manual transmission is when stuck in mud/swamp the moment you depress the Clutch you separate the the clutch plate and the Flywheel which resultantly sucks in all the Mud/water/debris in to the transmission and can potentially damage the tranny. Same case applies with the starter. Restarting your engine in knee deep water/mud lets in water.

I've put about 10K miles on my 6 speed. Anytime I am merging to hwy speed and I'm hardly pushing 3000 rpm I can smell something somewhere is burning. I've been driving stick since the day one and so it was quite obvious to me where the burned smell is coming from . Initially I thought it's just a new clutch and within few short weeks it will surely go away but it never did. The clutch operates exactly the same way as it did when I picked up the Jeep new at the dealer's lot . It's not the easiest clutch to master that goes without saying but I wonder if maybe during the first recall the mechanic didn't clean the bell housing properly and there is still some left over oil that just burns. I would find it strange that dry clutch would keep on producing the burned odour for such a long time. I suspect I would feel some slippage as well by this time but there is none.I took the vehicle back to the dealer to see if they find any issue with it but guess what? They never did and the only person according to the highly trained technician the only person who can smell the clutch is me. I gave up on FCA and now it will be either Centreforce or a trade . How difficult it would be for a mechanic to inspect what condition the clutch is in at present time. I am getting ready for a long road trip and I don't need extra stress on my mind. Thank you.

Curtis Rolland If you have access to a manual now I’d probably try to get some practice in with that first. Just to get used to the basics. And most modern clutches are pretty tough so if your not perfect it shouldn’t be that big of a deal. And also if you know anyone that has a manual have them ride with you for a little bit so they can point out to you what your doing wrong or how to get better 👍🏻. Thanks for watching!

Hello friend. I know this is a year old video but I had a couple of questions about the six-speed Willy's. My girlfriend is really excited about these things and she is currently trying to build her own on one of these websites. We have test-driven a couple of Jeeps and the gear ratio is different between the Willy's and the regular sport Wranglers. I'm curious to know what the difference is between the two gear ratios and was wondering if you knew yourself. Thanks for the video. I appreciate your take on this late model Jeep. I'm very impressed with how Chrysler was able to maintain the Jeep's namesake for what it's worth. Cheers🍻

  • @drivenmad2089

Basically they’re the same as far as transfer case and gearing goes. They can both be optioned with 3.73(Shorter gears, smaller spacing) gears as opposed to 3.45(taller gears, bigger spacing) but only certain engine configurations get that option. They only one with a truly different manual is the rubicon since it has a different transfer case and 4.10 gearing. The Willy has slightly larger tires which can play a factor since the engine has to work a little harder to deal with the extra weight and rotating mass so the gaps between gears might feel bigger. Hope that helped haha Thanks for watching!

If starter dies we can still compression push start our manual. And manual transmissions don't overheat. On a very remote trail in an Arizona rock gully, another Jeep's starter died and he couldn't get his Jeep restarted. He was in an automatic tj and i was in a manual 5spd tj. I removed my starter to loan to him just so he could restart his vehicle and get off the trail and back home. Meanwhile i was without a starter but i could compression push start mine. After removing mine and his and trying to install mine in his Jeep, turned out it didn't matter 🥲 because my tj starter wouldn't fit his tj because of starter mounting orientation being different on his automatic jeep than it was on my manual jeep. So i had to tow his dead jeep out the rest of the way on a very challenging trail with long ride to the trail head through obsticles and no bypasses. That was a long day.. I'd only get automatic if with diesel.

When the clutch is engaged when you can coast while not in any gear you having to actually pick the gear or being able to go from 3rd to 5th and skip a gear all together. And sure they shift faster but in a Jeep is that even important? Haha. Clearly you’re a fan of auto’s which is cool they both have their pros and cons.
