People just wine alllll the time don't they. I lived with stairs like these for a long time. Drunk, high, didn't matter, carried furniture and everything.....everyone just wants to blame their own incompetence on others. I've fallen more on "up to code" stairs than the spiral.

My dream home would have an enclosed spiral staircase to the breakfast room (not as a main staircase). 😊

Spiral staircases meet code if they are 60” in diameter and all other clearances are met. These appear to be.

I need to build 6 spiral stair cases to a loft, but would rather have one normal stair case against the wall but the damn AC units were put right in the way.

I'm planning to put in new stairs to my basement, and a spiral staircase is likely what we're doing. I have an exterior set of stairs for furniture. I don't drink alcohol. And why would I be more worried about falling down these stairs at night more than straight stairs? Either way would hurt. Is one more painful than another or more likely to lead to a fall for some reason?

Hi Lurch. Good questions. And I agree, spiral staircases are so cool and take up less space. Since each tread approximates a triangle, the outside foot has plenty of room to be stable. It's the inside foot closest to the pole which is at risk. Ideally the tread dimension should approximate 10", but on spiral stairs the inside foot only has maybe a 4"-5" tread dimension on which to be stable. Be careful please. Especially with socks on.

I fully agree. They’re stunning but SO hard to walk on. They need to ALL have better grip. No wood flooring. Even carpet is risky.

You can put LED lighting and tread on the spiral stairs. Unless you're elderly - spiral stairs shouldn't be a deal breakers, they make all kinds of modular furniture for situations like this

A spiral staircase should only exist on the main floor and grant residents access to the basement, moreover, the basement should have its own entrance for furniture moving. All of the other arguments are nonsensical. There is no data to back that spiral staircases are more dangerous than straight staircases.

Most codes are to screw the home owner over. There shouldn't be any codes. If I want to build a death trap for myself. I damn well should be able to. Mind your own business and stay away from my ass. Codes are really design to cost you money. I see way too many times in my youth. Building inspector wanting bribes to pass a house. And don't you dare try to BS me all inspectors I seen had thier hands out in many places. My grandfather paid twice as much to build his house..Because it was by code. Yet the house on both sides of him were not built to code. Big tell is he had to put a 3 foot foundation under his house. And the other houses sat right on the ground. ALL built at the same time. And there were many more. BUT that one was very visible. And yes all three were on flat ground. There is no way his house was in a 3 foot hole. Later I ran into inspectors myself. And had to pay $200 to $1500 for there bribes. And that was doing things by code. By a licence contractor. So F codes. Codes are code for BRIBES nothing more.

exactly, building a house in asia is so much easier than in north america, it's heavily regulated up north and as you said, unnecessarily cost more money.

I had to pay an AQMD (Air Quality Management District) inspector in Los Angeles County a $3,500 bribe in in about 1998 or 1999, IIRC. FWIW, she was a SMOKIN HOT brunette. 💃 I also had to pay an official at the City of Ontario, CA an $8,000 bribe in 2000. So, I got smart and moved to Boundary County Idaho where there are no building codes. The state inspects Electric, Plumbing and HVAC, but other than that, you can build whatever you can imagine. FREEEEEDOM🚀
