Why are most planes painted white?
When a brand-new plane rolls out of the factory, they are very often painted in a greenish anti-corrosive paint, so that the plane can fly or be moved to the final assembly line and paint shop. Therefore they are nicknamed the "green jets" and are a rare sight for plane spotters.
But once the plane arrives at the paint shop, let´s take an Airbus A380 as an example, it takes approximately 34 painters, working in three shifts each day for fifteen days to wash, prepare and paint the plane. After 6000 working hours, they´ve roughly applied 1100 kilograms (2425 lbs) of paint onto the plane. And that procedure needs to be repeated every seven to eight years, depending on the use of the plane and cleaning schedule.
After applying a minimum of two layers, the plane gains a few more pounds to its dry operating weight, and even more, if a third more colourful layer is sprayed onto it such as the company logo etc.
Therefore putting fancy detailed liveries onto planes is not only costly at first, but also increases it´s operating cost.
For example, a Boeing 737 paint job can be as heavy as 500 kilograms which equals 6 passengers who aren´t paying for their flight and increasing the fuel consumption.
See more about it in the video :)
BIG THANK YOU TO TLV1979 who provided me with this amazing picutres, please check out his great collection of aviation pictures at: www.flickr.com/photos/2569506...
Thanks for watching, all the best your "Captain" Joe

    4. No. White doesn't magically keep cool in high temperatures. White reflects light more than any specific colour (since it is made up of all the visible colours) so it heats up less when exposed to sunlight. Look at high speed aircraft like the SR71 or the Bell X15... BLACK to RADIATE heat.

So basically it (1) Help in locating any oil, fuel, hydraulic fluid leaks (2) Helps in identifying cracks during hard landing (3) Due to hight reflectivity and low absorbivity of white surface it will reflect most of heat waves and so the metal underneath the paint will not be heated so the thermal loads on already loaded structure can be controlled which will prevent metal creep.

Hey Joe, great video, but here's one correction about composite parts being painted: The problem is not thermal expansion stress due to the parts heating up. In fact, most fibre composites are designed to have a CTE of nearly zero, so stress is not a problem. The reason for painting them is that the polymer matrix degrades when subjected to UV radiation (which there is a lot of at higher altitude because of the thinner atmosphere and the lack of clouds). The parts also need to be protected from environmental influences (moisture especially), due to the polymers' tendency to pick up water and swell - which in term leads to stress and lower performance. Fly safely

Hi, how about you do a video to explain the centre of gravity and how it is determined. How important it is for safe and efficient flight of aircraft . On multi leg flights how is the plane kept balanced when lots of people get off or on so it's rarely the same weight distribution for the flight leg. Thanks for all your informative videos.

Yes, the color is called "flash white" and a lot of command and control planes are still painted that way, such as the Looking Glass plane which will take command of the US armed forces in the event of, well, the normal chain of command being vaporized by nuclear war. Edit: As Jonathan Chesnutt pointed out below it's actually "anti-flash white" and not just "flash white"

The paint booths they use to paint these planes are incredible. The air handling systems they use to feed the air in is very complex and requires a bunch of stages. I worked at a company that designed the air handlers for aircraft and many other things. When I started there they were building units for feeding paint booths for the F-16. The US has sold some older planes to Pakistan I believe and they were setting up paint booths to reprint them and maintain them. This air handler was specially made to fit in a container to go on a cargo ship. It’s one of those things you probably don’t think about.

  • @nathanchetram287

Airplanes use nitrogen because it's a lot less sensitive to changes in temperature, and the pressure will fluctuate a lot less than if air was used. Most cars use air since they operate in less extreme conditions, but high performance cars may use nitrogen just for consistency.

  • @dobiedude7479

Most of the larger, faster aircraft do. The reason is that nitrogen is dry, it contains no water. Why does this matter? Imagine this. An Airbus model “abc” takes off retracts the gear and climbs to 38,000 feet. The water collects at a low point and freezes. The aircraft lowers its altitude for landing. Maybe the ice has time to turn into liquid water or even vapor. Maybe not. Imagine the vibrations due to out of balance conditions when the tire suddenly starts rotating when it touches the ground at 150 MPH.

The twin otter relies entirely on cables and pullies to move the control surfaces, so when a cable wears down and breaks there is nothing one can do. The best way to stop this from happening is preventative maintenance. Modern aircraft use hydraulic systems, and some aircraft like the 737 still use cables as a backup system. The 737 does have trim disconnect switches for the stabilizer trim, but I'm not sure about redundancies for the other control surfaces.
