We didn't get any real bites from religious callers, but if you're looking for a relaxed, conversational distraction, this show fits the bill.

While he was reading the letter, I realized just how lucky I am to have been raised in an atheist family.
Imagine all the people you're reaching out to together in a room and you'll see what a powerful influence you really are. Don't beat yourself up over a head-banging parrot and keep making these marvelous videos!
I'm really glad that my cable went out so that I finally got a chance to listen to a whole podcast! LOL I should be TheLazyAtheist

Your the best man,you deserve even more subscribers.promoting your channel here in the UK!
@TheThinkingAtheist I don't get to hear your podcasts live here in Norway because it's usaly in the middle of the night, so I love that you put them up on KZread. I have now listened to all eight of your podcasts and I LOVE every single one. I don't know why. Maybe it's your arguments, maybe it's your obvious charisma, or maybe it's your awesome, deep, dark voice. I don't know. All I know is, don't ever stop. Thank you soo much, and Happy Haloween ^,..,^.
@TheThinkingAtheist these podcast are AWSOME keep them comming!!!!
You are amazing sir. I really feel for Ashley. She deserves better.

That rabit bit OMFG i loled so hard "I NEVER SAID HE EVOLVED FROM A RABBIT!" ~_~
I rarely leave a comment, but I appreciate your shows a lot.
Thirty thousand subscribers at podcast 8. Thirteen years later, three hundred and fifty seven thousand subscribers and.. What.. Six hundred podcasts? Keep it up, Seth. I know you know it by now, but you're having a positive effect.
Such a great podcast! Nice voice ;)
Listening on a beautiful Sunday morning in the mountains of western NC. ‘Just want to have a conversation’. Yes. And as a long-time non-believer (via Carl Sagan/Dawkins/Harris/Hitchens), I see much of the clergy as the spiders. Thanks for the show bro
Nice show. It's interesting to hear all of the weft and weave of the atheist community and their experience. I am intrigued by the way that the enculturation works, especially in the United States with regards to religiosity.
I love to hearing this guy, laughing.
@Brakdern gotta admit though it is amazing. i love the human body and how it works it is amazing, and how it was evolved to be like that and to adapt, and the ever expanding universe is just mind boggling.
Horray for the show. It was about time.
Very nice podcast. :)
You deserve even some 300 000 subscribers...
@goal2004 Great response. Made me think about it.
You are a brilliant man. Just listening to the first ten, twenty minutes of this introduction, really makes me wonder what is the point of a belief, if someone could become so spiritual and forgiving without Religion. In fact, I don't mind if no one calls, and no offense to the thoughtful callers, because I love listening to what you have to say. I do love all your Podcasts, but I honestly prefer your other videos, because they are a work of art, and complete in itself.
@TheThinkingAtheist Given the lack of video and low audio bit-rate, I would imagine the overall filesize is quite small. I was curious as to why you don't record the audio at a slightly higher bit-rate. It would really boost the quality. Maybe something around 92/128k? :)
You have an epic radio voice.
@kexxrulz it depends if you are talking about subtractive or additive color, but light reflection is actually additive, meaning different colors in the spectrum create white light when combined. This is how television and computer displays work. Subtractive color is paint. Mixing many different colors of paint will create black, but this is due to the nature of pigments. Pigments combined in this way absorb light instead of reflect it. So she is still accurate with her description.
"You can't win a game of chess if you play against someone who don't know the rules". So true. Talking with believers is impossible.
"The religion of me." That's a good one, and I will use it...
I think you meant Eucharist. But whatever :P New atheist here. Love that you've got this show. I'm reading and watching and listening to everything I can about it and evolution.
The conversation that hits in around 49:16 about spirituality and how you can be a atheist and still be spiritual. Well i easily just look at it as spirituality being another name for passionate, because the "emotion" can only be described by other emotions. We can't fathom what other people feel when they describe an emotion, or the connections to a certain word.
@MastermindX I definitely agree with you there. Any thoughts on my first question?
I remember you talking about the dictator argument before. How long ago was that?
I regret not going to this live. I could have added a bit about the doubt involved, which is the only competent argument I could think of. I forgot about this, though. XP
Nice Podcast Apparently the fish weren't biting today. But you did get one.
@tnordloh I wanted to go to that so much!! My mom couldn't get the days off of work :( Was it fun? I always miss the podcast too haha
When are you planning your next Podcast?
@TheThinkingAtheist We get edited version on you tube?, fuck i might have to listen live. tat might proof tricky thouh.
I feel for the woman who wrote the letter. What a shame people turn from their own....over beliefs! I know if I came "out" I would lose friends and certainly some family. I haven't pushed anyone away from me because they're a believer. We can all live in this world together just as long as we learn respect and tolerance.
"the image on the shroud of turin was created by a flash of light" Yep, like a photographic flash which has been shown in an experiment to be able to make such an image
How DO I call in? I've looked in the forums, the website, the podcast hosting site. I have been listening to lots of these episodes and I always want to contribute.
I can identify a bit with the writer of the letter. I went to a Catholic university.. Jesuit so pretty liberal but Catholic nonetheless. After taking required philosophy and theology classes I became atheist. I really enjoyed those courses and I'm glad they were required. The philosophy really taught me how to think.
@TheThinkingAtheist OK, that's alright. It's still worth listening to.
@ItsDennyBaby That's my entire point, which is why I used the =/= symbol? It means does not equate.
You're doing a great thing. I'm a "never that religious" "used to be agnostic" atheist who isn't sure how far to go with his new found atheism. My parents and whole family are, as far as I know, like I was until a few months ago... not really comfortable with any specific religion but still thought of themselves as "Christians". What I can't decide is how to handle my atheism?? Do I try to tell my family what I am? Do I try to convert them? Or do I just play it cool and just play along?
I feel like I'm lucky to have been a Christian born into a mostly atheist family, atheism since the renaissance
@Pushtrak 3 Just got to 54:48 and see you go with the "Which god" approach too. Not that I expected I went a road no one else went.
@CarlosBenitez18 Thanks CB. Now I have to listen to this whole hour occasionally thinking about Neph.
Ashley, Hang in there, girl. You're not alone, and for what it's worth, if your family chooses to shun you over something so innocuous, then they don't deserve your company in the first place.
Can you find a way to improve the audio quality for the next show? It is hard to listen to for an hour.
I just listen to this in the background while i play Fantasy Online!
I must say...I want to call in here. Can international calls be made?
Great podcast! I agree with much of what the last caller pointed out about there being as many potential definitions of "god" as there are people who live or ever have lived. God for me is the collective universe at the end of time.
Did you create this podcast to discuss or to inflict atheism upon your listeners? also: why do you not express your opinions in a more persuasive way, say.. like Marilyn Manson? (not neccessarily from singing.. :) )
I hear ppl always using the term agnostic when they describe their transition from theism to atheism, but I thought agnosticism is the belief tht one can not know whether god exists (whether is be temporary agnosticism in practice or permanent agnosticism in principle), not ths idea of not knowing whether or not there is a god Are both correct definitions of agnosticism?
it would be so awesome to know u in person as a good friend! lol
@Deldrone Its only audio, shouldn't take long at all
As an atheist, that's easy to answer: multiple religions say that they have the one and only truth, and only by believing that truth exclusively, will you not go to hell. That means everyone goes to hell, because believing in one of them means not believing in the rest of them, thus earning a trip to hell. Believing in none of them also gets you there, as does believing in multiple. I doubt heaven was created if no one is going there after death.
I told someone that I have morals without god and she said "No." She did not go on about how I need god to be moral. She didn't tell me why I was wrong. She just said "No" and changed the subject. I found that very interesting.
On another note, the window in the ark was *sealed* by god just before the flood. So Noah and family would not have been able to use it to get rid of animal waste. Which means they all would have died from methane fumes.
Ever heard of Pascal's Wager? That's what it sounds like to me. I'd look into it.
@Pushtrak 2 The interesting question I like to ask of religious people isn't to prove god, but to prove it is their god and not another. It never seems a question they usually get. They seem to get a "prove there is a god" type. It is typically treated with a good bit of mental gymnastics.
im haunted by that question too, i dont know what to believe anymore well, i guess we will find out when we die
lol 22:40 ok, one of these days there has to be a song like that show up on this channel.
An epic win for TTA! Thumbs up if you agree!
The letter from Ashley makes me think, not for the first time, that organised religion is one of the most fertile grounds for hate that humans have developed so far. I would go so far as to say that it is worse than war, because it causes war. Worse than murder, because it justifies killing. Yes, it can be a force for good, but we can do the same good without the baggage that creates the hate. Thirteen years later.. I wonder where Ashley is now. I hope she's doing well and that things have improved.
You asked shockofgod to come? You're asking for massive stroke from frustration.
@TheThinkingAtheist I feel like you should make a documentary on why religion came to be, why Christianity and other not-so-old religions stuck while the religions before Christianity did not, and why it still exists today.
"Afterall I evolved from a rabbit so I should eat lettuce!" "Actually, that's completely false in every way possible. But I can see why you'd be confused. To hold that thought in your head and not realise how batshit crazy it is, you'd have to have the mental faculties of a rabbit. So maybe there is something to your claim afterall. Now if we're done acting like children in a playground, could we start behaving like family instead?" That or just sigh quietly, tell everyone else how nice it was to see them, say it's a shame that pride is such a problem that we can't even be polite for a full sentence, then quietly leave. Isn't it the Mormons that believe that we chose our family in pre-life before being born? Whoever it is, they have some serious explaining to do. Who would chose to be in a family with someone who puts being right before all else. That whole pride thing is a big point in the holey fables too, or so I've heard. So is taking care of those who need care. And who needs care and understanding more than the damned? Family is hard. I try not to insult family, but.. In that anecdote, your father was being a dick.
tight video TTA
Please tell me thiests actually called in?
I allready like to give thumb up after the first 3 minutes :)
@TheThinkingAtheist You should throw in some random callers in a separate video, if you still have the raw video files.
@TheThinkingAtheist -Nice
Glad to see some intelligence in the comments on this video. It is clear people require a way to validate themselves, as I and other atheists would agree we seek to live and succeed on our own merits. Those of faith require an eternal promise of life to accept an apathetic existence, along with a way to feel they are morally flawless, feeling even immoral deeds can be redeemed by asking a deity for forgiveness.
@TheThinkingAtheist Well, as Jesus once said "Editing for Brevity is not a sin." The chat room and live show was prety fun!
@slipcurve I have the same impression. If you'll pardon my ironic imagery, it's as if Goliath lies slain on the ground with David standing there, slingshot in hand, trying to figure out what to do with himself.
As Aron Ra says: If you can't show it, you don't know it. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence otherwise they can be dismissed withour evidence.
Sorry I missed this live. Would've loved to have called in with a theistic viewpoint.
@keelie300 Tht makes sense Though in practice i am an atheist, in technical terms i call myself an agnostic deist because i believe, however unlikely they may be, tht we can't ever be sure tht the universe is not a construct of beings beyond our perception I don't believe it is, but my agnosticism says it is a possibility
To the guy who asked about the 300-year-old person/s -- when I asked my Christian Living teacher that, she said that it was because time then was recorded differently, and that what could have been 300 for them was, in present time, around 20 or 30 years old. LOL
Take A Moment The Wizard of Silly is here in sunny Calgary Untruedauxland 😂 Spot on my fellow Ape Stay Silly Stay Safe and Stay Free
@216trixie XD First your welcome. And second, thank you, i really like the abreviation.
I am an athiest, but when someone would go up to me and ask questions like how do you expain this or try to argue with me, I pretty much say "I'm terrible at argueing so don't ask me."
Hey, I wanted to show my husband this podcast, but I couldn't find me in it (Theo, stlennybruce). Bummer!
@indignant99 Not all Christian denominations recieve eucharist, so if he did not belong to one of those denominations, it is not unusual that he would not know the word.
great podcast i think the reason ppl don`t call in is because 1) you are entertaining on your own & 2) you are too eloquent for theists. suggest maybe getting a sidekick or sounding less eloquent :)
@ismoketoomuchweed He's givin' us the cold-shoulder treatment.
Your voice is so epic :[
@Number of religions: a matter of definitions. I would argue that yes, many denominations believe differently about this or that, but they still hold to the same fundamental truths, which I say makes them still practically identical. Not that that's really what we're debating anyway. As for evidence, I'm sure you're familiar with this argument, but from a scientific perspective, is anything EVER proven beyond question? Of course not, we're all personally tasked with interpreting our experiences.
@lazyperfectionist1 Hmmm... you'll have to check the wikipedia on this one...
I really enjoy your podcasts. Some times it shocks me as to how religious the USA must be... i find it difficult to believe. I live in the UK, and so being athiest isnt seen as stigma at all. if you say you are athiest most people wont bat an eyelid; they might find if you had been relgious more interesting because of the time and effort involved. I think questions of why and how do not enter most British peoples lives. I am a staunch Athiest; doing a degree in Biology helped to cement this :p
@thexshattered HAhahaha. I haven't heard that one before
@MacabreManifesto That's rough.
according to hitchen's "god is not great", dawkins called is a proponent of "brights"
That Deuteronomy 28 reference was a new one to me. I just read that chapter- there are 374 words dedicated to listing god's blessings and 1455 words describing the humiliating, painful, and torturous curses bestowed to those who disobey and reject god- including the eating your child's flesh, or the woman you're betrothed to will be raped (yeah, rape the woman to punish the man- god loves women?) , famine, death, disease, and many many other tortures from a loving god. But God loves everyone!
I think the reason the switchboard didn't light up is because not too many believers are aware of the program After all the first call you got wasn't from a sure believer but from someone on the fence who would have likely searched stuff like your program Send notices to religious organizers or encourage your followers here on youtube to invite a believer in their own life to participate
Funny how the Catholic School that woman went to removed Judaism from the World Religions course.
Being an American Atheist looks hard. I'm glad my atheism never had any consequences. I'm lucky, pretty much everyone I know is atheist or deist. The theists keep their mouths shut because they feel they will be ridiculed. My thoughts go to every atheist who had to go through all that hate. It's so painful when parents turn their children into enemies...
@mnkittel omg cannot unhear
