Reason and Passion - Khalil Gibran (Powerful Life Poetry)

Read by Shane Morris
Written by Khalil Gibran
- On Reason and Passion -
Your soul is oftentimes a battlefield, upon which your reason and your judgment wage war against your passion and your appetite.
Would that I could be the peacemaker in your soul, that I might turn the discord and the rivalry of your elements into oneness and melody.
But how shall I, unless you yourselves be also the peacemakers, nay, the lovers of all your elements?
Your reason and your passion are the rudder and the sails of your seafaring soul.
If either your sails or your rudder be broken, you can but toss and drift, or else be held at a standstill in mid-seas.
For reason, ruling alone, is a force confining; and passion, unattended, is a flame that burns to its own destruction.
Therefore let your soul exalt your reason to the height of passion, that it may sing; And let it direct
your passion with reason, that your passion may live through its own daily resurrection, and like the phoenix rise above its own ashes.
I would have you consider your judgment and your appetite even as you would two loved guests in your house.
Surely you would not honour one guest above the other; for he who is more mindful of one loses the love and the faith of both.
Among the hills, when you sit in the cool shade of the white poplars, sharing the peace and serenity of distant fields and meadows - then let your heart say in silence, “God rests in reason.”
And when the storm comes, and the mighty wind shakes the forest, and thunder and lightning proclaim the majesty of the sky,- then let your heart say in awe, “God moves in passion.”
And since you are a breath in God’s sphere, and a leaf in God’s forest, you too should rest in reason and move in passion.

Hope you enjoy this one! Is Gibran one of the greatest poets of all time?

Can't hold myself from tearing up🥺 Indeed poetry can do magic. Modern day Psychology says we have two minds- the Emotional (here, referred to as Passion), the other Cognitive (here, Reason). They have inhibitory connections to each other. The emotional mind is the more rudimentary kind (the 'reptilian brain') and though it comes handy in times of emergency, it is the cognitive mind keeping a check on the overdoings of the other that makes us humans different from other animals. This complex understanding of psychology has been simply yet succinctly put through in this poem. This can perhaps inspire readers/listeners 1000 times more than dry facts from a psychology book could (where I learnt it from). And therein lies the beauty and triumph and importance of Art! 💖

Oh how I loved this! It brought tears to my eyes. Everything within us that appears "conflicting" shares the same space that we are. When the perceived inner conflict is no longer perceived as conflict but rather felt as co-existence, peace ensues. We need only to allow all that we are to co-exist peacefully within. When we experience this inside, all the apparent "conflict" outside also begins to feel as co-existence. All part of the same shared space that we are.

We can do anything we want to if we stick to it long enough. Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence. Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow. Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much. Faith is the strength by which a shattered world shall emerge into the light.
