Rearmament and forced labour: BMW's role during World War II
BMW's history is strongly interwoven with both world wars. The company is founded to produce aircraft engines that are used in the First World War.
From the mid-1930s, BMW becomes an integral part of the National Socialist rearmament. To meet the high demand, the company uses prisoners of war and, from 1942 onwards, concentration camp inmates in its production facilities. Max Mannheimer was one of them.
But BMW was not only active in the direct war effort: The motor sports team in Hitler’s Germany, the NSKK or Nationalsozialistische Kraftfahrerkorps, also used BMW cars.
