Rear DIFFERENTIAL FLUID Change (Fast and EASY) l 2017 Dodge Ram 1500
Today we are changing the rear differential fluid on a 2017 Dodge Ram 1500 fast and easy. You are going to need a 14mm Hex/Allen key socket (most importantly), some kind of ratchet, a drain bucket, flat head screw driver, 3 quarts of 75w140 oil (will need friction modifier for a limited slip) and some good old elbow grease. Make sure you take the truck for a good drive to really get that rear diff fluid warm because as i mentioned it helps to really drain all the impurities out of the rear end. I would recommend going with a synthetic oil because it will last longer and protect the rear end much better then conventional oils. lastly make sure the oil level is flush with the bottom of the fill plug hole, and even check maybe a few days later just to double check. too much oil could cause of aeration, resulting in improper lubrication and obviously too little oil can also cause lubrication issues. It's really not hard. But make sure you have a 14mm hex socket for the bottom drain plug. They are somewhat hard to come by in most normal tool kits and could be pricey to buy separately. regardless 150 dollar is steep!

Hi, I just changed my rear diff fliud for the first time and I used Royal purple 75w90 thats what the manual recommended and I have a lsd that it says to use mopar additive but my question is the Royal purple gear oil says it has the friction moddifiter already should I be worried I didint add the mopar additive. So far I dont notice any difference from the factory oil. Thanks

It's okay to use high temp rtv on the paper gasket?
So no fill plug above that drain plug? Just the rubber plug?
Shouldn't you use some thread sealant on the drain plug before putting it back in?
Do you need to change front fluid as well?
Is this the same procedure for a 2013?

I guess that's what the engineers determined to be best for the differential!

I would check the differential part number located on the hub and see what it takes just to be sure

Only the 3.92 and the Dana 3.92 rear diff requires 75-140. Other Ram diffs use 75-90

I have the 5.7 Hemi in my truck. that being said if you do have the 3.6 the Diff should be the same
