"REALLY Good Product But No Barriers To Entry WHATSOEVER!" | Dragons’ Den

Ойын-сауық

Cheesecake-maker Joe Moruzzi pitches for £50,000 in return for a 5% equity stake in 'Pleesecakes'. Pleesecakes started as a hobby whilst Joe juggled his painting/decorating job but it soon skyrocketed on social media, however, if Joe can do this so easily, what's stopping everyone else?
An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

    35% was a VERY reasonable offer given his current cashflow issues and apparently poor understanding of business in general, what he needs is a business partner more so than an investor and Touker would have been a good fit in this regard. He didn't even discuss a buyback option with him.

    @AJ P I somewhat agree there but that's a risk. Promotion works sometimes but his problem was lack of ability to produce. Not get customers. He will ruin his business even faster if he has to tell people no because he can't handle the orders. Especially big names. They wont call twice. With Touker he could handle twice as much and I'm sure if they had large orders or blew up... Touker would accommodate.

  • @233kosta

    @233kosta

    4 жыл бұрын

    @AJ P It depends what he's after. If it's just cash he needs, there are far more suitable places to go. The whole point of the show (and its celebrities) is that they also get a whole lot of hand holding along the way. By the look of this guy's company valuation and turnover projections, it's hand holding he needs, much more than a 50 grand cash injection. Put yourself in the shoes of a self made millionaire, would _you_ get out of bed for less than 20%? Keep in mind that any return you see on your 50k is only ever going to come out of the net profit, proportioned at the % equity you own (so at 5%, 100k net profit gets you 5k in dividends), until you decide your work is done and sell your shares. I get that 35% is a big chunk, but I'm willing to bet Touker would gladly have agreed to sell back a significant fraction of his equity at the original rate/valuation once the business takes off. He didn't. Even. Ask. I get that being on national television is a big marketing boost, but the boy needs help and unless he gets it, he can quite easily make a mistake that costs him the whole business. Also keep in mind what Peter said, someone with the facilities and capital could drive him out of the market *tomorrow*

    Na he remembered... #me2 movement Women fighting for equal rights Equal pay What a shame, rise of feminism takes the "gentle" out of gentleman! - No more opening and holding doors - Lost opportunity of "going first" which effectively makes women feel special and respected. This trait of mannerism subsequently raised the status of women - We will end "silent farts" and let our natural gas out next to females, after all it's natural. But before the rise of feminism, we had the decency to fart away from you, because no woman should have to resonate with the surrounding of unpleasant aromas. - No more compliments, a woman has... well had the right to know the splendour of their appearance! - no more helping with lifting the small luggages, up the staircase.

    It's no longer a secret that a lot of budding entrepreneurs see Dragons Den as a platform to raise investment from crowdfunding later on. A plethora of unbudging or rejected participants start a Crowdfunding campaign within 24 hours after their gig is aired (the cake guy did the same). It's a clever strategy - they get a better deal than what a dragon would offer.

Many restaurant owners would do the same to make extra money to lease out their kitchen facilities when not in use.

    A very intelligent entrepreneur but I do think he should have taken the offer. Tuka Solomon has a wealth of knowledge in that industry and contacts. Most entrepreneurs want to give away as little equity as possible and completely forgetting what they are receiving in return. It's important to look at the long-term strategy and with a dragon on board. Dragons with more equity will put their passion into the company and make it a success.

    In this instance, I think he did the right thing in knocking back the offer. When Touker started talking about using his own kitchens and staff, he would have lost creative control of his business. Sometimes it's ok to start small and gradually progress, as long as you are not accumulating debt. This free advertising was worth more the 50k. Just looked on his instagram account and he's running cheesecake making classes. That's a great side business.

    However, he had an overdraft and maxed out credit cards, beyond my own risk appetite if I had the money to invest, I'd think the 35% offer was slightly high but reasonable. Like the above comments, the guy should have accepted beyond his 10% and maybe offered like 25-30% instead. However, he has no background in business so it didnt cross his mind to counter offer.

    Why be greedy, only releasing 5 - 10% equity to have 95-90 % of a business that's doing okay when you could have accepted Toukers offer and have 65% of a business, that got not just an injection in cash investment! but also personal investment from a dragons team that potentially could become number one in that market doing astronomical figures if you really believe in it that much

    A lot of the off camera scenes of investment "wins" shown on TV falling out immediately after filming is because of the equity offer, pitchers change their mind or their accountants advise them to withdraw as it will hurt them more if a dragon grabs a large portion of their budding business. Another reason is the technicalities that dragons themselves are the ones that withdraw their offers off screen because the pitcher were not honest with their figures and the situation of their business in real life in contrast with what they were saying during filming. If you are into business or practicing accountancy and finance, 10% or 7% equity is already seen as BIG for an amateur or a veteran businessman to simply give out to an investor.
