This is the first video i watched from your channel and is super uplifting to find someone in a similar position on the advnetures of balancing art side business with a demanding 9to5 job. I also am not the type to jump straight into just my art as a job as i want to have the security of a salary to pay rent etc. i know if i am fully depending on my art to make money to live it would drain the joy out of it and out too much pressure on myself to create to pay the bills...one day i hope to get there, im going to binge all your videos now! I hear ya. Also balancing my typical job (electrical test engineering) with trying to start up an art business. I'm not the best at being consistent on youtube, so props to you for that and congrats on reaching monetization! Enjoyed your video while working on a commission...at 2:30 am 😂

It’s not an easy thing to do!! It’s taken me a looonnnggg time of posting to figure out how to post consistently (and I still had to stay up until 2am on Saturday night to get this video ready to go on Sunday morning hahaha so I’m still figuring it out). Keep going, though! It’s not a race… we’ll all figure this out at our own pace 🥰

Oh wow! I'm also an artist who is a full time environmental scientist (also majored in ecology)! Between the full time job and all my other obligations, it's been pretty hard to get paintings done. Ah well, we must push on!

I found your videos yesterday and really enjoying what you are sharing. I am a new mom, trying to build my creative business, learn about surface design and teach art two days a week, but will be going back to work full time in the fall. I am definitely trying to find the groove for balancing all of this in a sustainable way so that I can keep the momentum going after my maternity leave ends.

Recently I’ve found a way to schedule my posts in advance (for Instagram) thru their “meta business suite” wherein I just have to provide content to upload and have two months worth of posts ready to go on a consistent schedule. I end up spending an hour or two at the end of those months uploading and editing but it’s working out so far to help me compartmentalize (it’s extremely helpful with my adhd too and not wanting to be on my laptop or phone all the time and get distracted when I wanna do art).

@@louschuart I think when I phase back into an era when I’m treating Instagram as a higher priority, I’ll definitely take more advantage of the post scheduling feature! These days I’m focusing more on KZread, but I love the idea of being able to “set it and forget it” with Instagram posts. Also - thank you for your kind words!! So glad you’re enjoying my videos 🥰

I love your videos, they have such a soothing and motivational vibe. To answer your question, I paint in the morning, before work, and I benefit from work form home too so I have plenty of time when I wake up so early. I'm not necessarily a morning person by default, but I heard this podcast episode on The Diary of a CEO where Kristen Holmes was invited and she said it's best to sleep between 10PM and 6PM for optimal health. This resonated with me because as children, my mom used to make me and my sisters go to bed at 9PM and we always had amazing results at school. So I've been giving this sleeping schedule a try for a few weeks now, and for now I'm loving it. I'm also a homebody so I don't care to socialize in the evening, so I can easily go to sleep early 😄 Organization-wise I also have a morning routine to do list and an evening routine to do list for taking care of our house so I can more or less stay on top of things.

I’m so glad to hear you enjoy my videos!! You know, I totally agree that sleeping between 10 and 6 is probably best for us… I’ve always been a night owl and have often struggled to get myself in bed earlier haha. But maybe it’s worth a try!! I do love the idea of painting in the morning when there’s nice light outside (instead of just the weird fluorescent lighting in my kitchen in the dead of night 😂)

I would love to have an art business, but I know I already struggle to balance life with life. Kudos to you for making it happen!

Very realistic. I feel i never have enough time for art. And indeed i never do much daily. This system can really drain our energy. You seem very honest about it. Do what you can.

It really can drain our energy. It always takes a lot of intention for me to make time for art… but I agree that doing what we can is always going to be better than doing nothing!

congrats on monetization! This was a great video. I'm starting to take my creative goals seriously, and am trying to figure out how to balance my time without just exhausting myself. I'm a civil engineer by day and artist by night lol

Thank you, Jane!! 🎉 It takes a lot of practice and intention to do it 😅 but it’s always encouraging to connect with other people who are in the same boat! I think setting realistic goals has been really helpful for me in terms of maintaining momentum. If I expected myself to spend four hours painting every day, I’d just be disappointed in myself and discouraged, yknow? Baby steps!

Great video! Thank you for showing us your honest setup, I'd much rather see that than a polished studio. I work full time and I'm trying to balance it with book illustrating. I definitely recommend carrying a small notebook, cheap as you like, for low pressure sketching and note-taking. I find it helps me build momentum so I don't feel like I'm starting cold on art after a long day at work.

Book illustrating - how cool!! Children’s books, or something else? I’ve been sitting on the idea of trying to break into the world of cookbook illustrating… 🤔 The notebook thing totally makes sense! I’m pretty actively involved in my work throughout the day, but it could be great to have a little sketchbook on hand for those meetings where I just have to listen!

Congrats on getting monitized !! Yep here working full time and trying to feed that creative business too…and a mom and a care giver..so about 4 to 6 hrs a week I can work on my mini biz. Because for me I love my sleep too much and I can’t function otherwise 😂 at 50 sleep is too important 😂. I just launched my KZread channel (finally) in December 🎉🎉

I want to do this so badly, but I struggle a lot with mental exhaustion after working in a corporate setting all day. How do you manage that? For me, it actually really affects my creativity :(

It totally affects my creativity, too, so I definitely feel you. There are some days I feel so drained that even if I technically have time, I have no creative energy left to actually make anything. Sometimes I find that once I get started though my creative energy finds a way to flow. I find it really helpful to keep my art supplies really accessible so that it doesn’t take any effort to get set up and started. I also find setting myself goals really motivates me. I literally have my creative business goals written on little pieces of paper and stuck on the wall so I see them every day. But ultimately, I think you should just be gentle with yourself and just create when you can. It’s not a race, and any amount of creativity should be counted as a win 🫶🏼
