Thanks. That was good. I figured out modulation already via ears and the shape of my composition or the structure of it, or the melody. But i like how you explained regarding brass, and the sus cymbal. Very relative. Good one!

Hi Zach, thx for the video! Always as it need to be and helpful. I have an irrelevant question, i would be so happy if you answer it. I am considering to get a monitor headphone. Is this you use in this video a monitor headphone? Is it useful for mixing/mastering processes? Do you recommend it?

if you don't have expression in libraries (most don't) you can automate the track volume in a similar manner. I know a game composer of 15 yrs who is doing this on every instrument track, it works out very well.

Ye. In ableton, i have a utility on every track and just automate the volume. I leave CC11 alone. It ends up getting fiddly.

You can achieve interesting results if you automate gain of high shelf eq in a combination with a standard volume automation. It will sound way more realistic because of different high frequency balance in a loud parts and soft parts

Hello Zach, I'm a big fan of your videos, including this latest one - truly informative and inspiring. If you don't mind, I have a quick question that's slightly off-topic. I'm on the hunt for an electric bass guitar VST suitable for Jazz and Bossa Nova music. Any recommendations? I've already got some excellent Double bass instrument VSTs, like the one from Insanity Samples' Cool Jazz Collection, which fits the genre perfectly. I've been eyeing the Orange Tree range too; while it's a bit pricey, the quality seems immense. I'm definitely planning to go for El Piano from them. Any thoughts you have would be awesome. Chers,

Hi.... I am highly inspired by your music... I started learning piano but then eventually my interest in multi instrumental music evolved a lot... And hence right now i am working on my transcribing capabilities... Also i am wondering if i must sell off my digital piano and buy a midi controller because i feel the keys on a digital piano are not suitable to play everything... Would you help me with some suggestions/advice? 😊

Fantastic video, watched it the second you posted it! How does using modulated legato campare to tenuto or marcato for brass? When do you know which one to use?

  • @ZachHeyde

Depends on the library, but the second two can be great for more front-heavy attacks like sforzandos or accented playing 👍🏻

Whats the advantage of using the fader vs just editing the volume and expression after with your mouse?

Generally you can get a more humanistic performance, as you're performing the fader like an instrument 👍🏻

Hi Zach ... thank you for your youtube channel and all your videos very interesting ... hmm, tel me, ... Can you tell us more about the controls you have with your iPad located to the left of your keyboard? So I don't know, is it for example to call your different sections ( str, brs, ww, etc.. ) directly in Logic? (personally it's something like that that I'm looking for) Thanks again...

That'd be MIDI expression, so volume of the MIDI (but not Kontakt's volume)
