I have a 2010 XF 3ltr diesel, we drove from the UK to europe covering 7 countries and 4,000 miles trouble free whilst towing a caravan. A couple of people actually commented that they liked the car, one guy in Switzerland actually saluted us as we drove by. It has 110k miles on the clock. Best car ive had and I've had a 3yr old BMW that loved the garage and cost me as much in repairs as i paid for it.

I own a facelift (2012 onwards) model and just some minor points: They incorporated a heated seat button on the infotainment centre Mine has bluetooth audio, it may be that it’s standard in them now The phone talk button as you called it on the steering wheel is actually voice commands, not only used for phone but can tell your car to do pretty much anything. For example you can press that and tell it to navigate somewhere and it will, completely hands free I believe all round sensors and reverse camera are optional extras, and only comes with rear sensors as standard (happy to stand corrected) May also be later models again but mine has a DVD player (for what it’s worth), worth mentioning Also heated mirrors, useful on a frosty morning Variations in gearbox, some have 8 gears Hope this is useful to anyone looking to buy one

Heated seat button on the touchscreen is available on the 2009 models, certainly on the Premium Luxury and Portfolio models. 6 CD changer is on my 2009 Premium Luxury and I think it's standard. I'm told the DVD player in the boot (for the sat nav disc) can play DVDs but I've never tried it. Voice command isn't on the Premium Luxury 2009 so I'm assuming it's an option (although the button is still there), but I think it's standard on the Portfolio model. I don't think Bluetooth audio was standard until 2015 on but I could be wrong. Again, 8 speed gearbox only came later on, it's not a variation as such but an upgrade from the earlier 6 speed box. However, many owners of both early and later models claim the 6 speed was more reliable. Confused yet? Well I think most models even up to current day do not have electrically folding mirrors as standard, although mine has folding, heated and auto dimming mirrors but it was definitely an option. All I can advise is make a list of the features you want and check that the car you are interested in has them - I didn't get a reversing cam which I thought was standard. The three models, from the most basic first, are Luxury, Premium Luxury and Portfolio, the latter being the one with most kit as standard - but do check as obviously there will be changes over the years too.

I am the happy owner of a 2010 XFR, it’s a 5.0 v8 supercharged petrol with 500BHP…….simply put it is the best car I have ever owned and possibly the best car I have ever sat it, including things you can play in on track days. This car does 0-60 in 4 seconds handles like a sports car when you want to play….. or you can cruise and forget the world, you just can’t hear it. In fact the sound proofing is so good in these that if I want to hear my v8 scream I need to open a window 😂 words and videos just don’t do these justice. It’s the feeling you get when you drive a jaggg that’s the deciding factor!

Great review. We have a facelift 2013 3.0 D XF-S in white with a full black pack and every possible factory extra - 20 inch Kalimnos wheels, carbon fibre interior, adaptive cruie control, sunroof, rear difuser same as the XFR-S, Meridian surround system, etc. It's a joy to own and drive - the sort of car you always look back at when leaving. The 600Nm of torque propels the car effortlesly despite its size.

Although I LOVE the styling and performance of my 2010 XF, I have almost spent as much in repairs as the purchase price of the car. Chasing oil leaks, transmission reprogramming, fuel pump leak, fixing bent rims, to gear shift lever not popping up, the clear coat fading and numerous other issues. Now I'm looking at a timing chain replacement. It has spent as much time in the shop as it's spent on the road. Besides all that, it still excites me every time I hit the start button and hope that the gear shift selector actually pops up and hear all 385 horses come to life. When I enter a highway and passing 75 MPH without a hitch it excites me. Or when I'm climbing HWY 50 into the Gold Country with what feels like unlimited power it's BAD A$$! The power and torc of this car is impressive. And the design and styling is head turning. I've only seen a few XF's around town. But I see a thousand Mercedes and BMW's at every intersection. This is my forever hot rod, despite the the issues that haunt this car. It's a love hate relationship. I have cursed out this car many times, but I love her. If you're thinking about purchasing one of these beware and be ready for a frustrating relationship.

Sounds like you've been unlucky, I've had my 2009 XF for 7 years and haven't had a problem. As long as they're looked after it should be fine, depends a lot on how previous owners treat them of course.

I have had my 2007 Jaguar XK convertible for the last 8 years. Its great in that although it is a full sized sedan it only has 2 doors, which gives me more room as I am a bigger guy, but can slide right in on it. Here in the Seattle area it is only 1 of 2 here. And finding third party repair or body work is somewhat of a chore. Thankfully it has been fairly stable in running. I do have a Jaguar/Range Rover dealer in the area and so they take of most of my needs. So fun, and I get a lot of compliments, especially on a sunny day with the top down.

Nice job in presenting, Ed! Yes, the USA only has received the petrol / gasoline models. Under Ford ownership, Jaguar design was regressive, unfortunately. Dearborn ownership was influencing the design path, and it drew too much on previous models of the past. Unquestionably, the original XJ6 and the Mark II were absolutely stunning cars and remain so, but when Ford facelifted the XJ40 with th X300, it was a step backwards. I may be in the minority, but I have loved the XJ40 styling from the get go when I was eagerly awaiting its release in the mid-1980s as it was finally seeing the light of day. It was contemporary, maintained the Jaguar elements, and simply well-proportioned with chiselled good looks. Its successor grafted on the look of the Series III of a decade earlier without aesthetic success in my eyes. Sir William Lyons was completely out of the picture on this car, having died in 1985, while he did consult on the XJ40. The grille on the X300 is elongated and makes the car look even wider and flatter. The S-Type I found interesting, and don't think it is unattractive; I am one of those who approve of the look of this polarizing design. But again, it was as if Ford directed Jaguar to come up with something "ye olde English". And the interior wasn't interesting whatsoever. But this car is absolutely a stonker! I like how Jaguar boldly moved away from the past with something bold, just as Sir William likely would have done. And honsetly, I LOVE the interior. The driver sees this more than he does the outside of his car, and the symphony of the shifter knob and vents opening up is a magnificent sight. The lighter wood trim looks much better on these modern vehicles rather than the darker drawing room dark oak, walnut, etc. Although this car was completely redesigned in 2015 as the X260 and is not the same car as your X250 model, it still retained the classic good looks for some continuation of the lineage. I'm not sure where Jaguar is headed now with talk of competing in Bentley territory, but the classic execurive saloon class that is smart, sporty, and not ostentatious is exactly the sweet spot that the XF resonates in me. @@Back_Road_Hero I say go for the X351, Ed! Life is short, and Jaguars are for enjoyment! I didn't know how to accept the design when it was first released, but now I consider it striking. It looks like absolutely nothing else on the road. I never like to say how extaordinarily good value used Jaguars are because I am afraid that the secret of how marvellous these cars are will get out. I am quite happy with the low used values owing to my champagne tastes and tap water budget! And like my favorite writer Bernard Shaw once eloquently observed, "A cynic is someone who knows the price of everything, and the value of nothing." A Jaguar is an experience that can't always be described, and price really doesn't play into it.

Agree the 3.0 Diesel is the one to go for , I started with a 2.2 Diesel premium luxury saloon in 2013 , car was fine but I only kept it for around 18 months as that engine was a bit agricultural , I then got a 3.0 Diesel R Sport Sportbrake in late 2014 (not the S but still a great engine). Ran it for 70k trouble free miles over 3 years , just checked and it is now just over 100k miles and recently MOT'd. Over the years I've had BMW 3&5 series , Audi A4 & A6 and the XF was easily as good as any of those. Currently running a Hyundai Tucson (functional , competent but not a jag...) , would love a late XJ but that might cause domestic strife..

You get all these people saying Jags are unreliable, but the only reason most of them say that is because they've read it elsewhere. I don't do a lot of mileage and I got a decent 09 plate one with 52k on the clock and it's passed every MOT, no problems recorded and it's been faultless in the 18 months I've had it. I've been driving for nearly 50 years and this has to be one of the best and most underrated cars ever built. Future collectors item for sure.

check the boot for water aswell ..ingress of water through rear light cluster into boot builds up under battery tray ,,,remove spare wheel ,unbolt subwoofer and inspect ....

Excellent review. 6 months ago the garage that I work in took a 2008 XF in part exchange it was a very hot day and my Boss said just try that Jag up the road coldest AC I’ve ever known he was right ended up buying the car. Would have been better if it was the 3litre version instead of the 2.7 but it’s still a fine motor car. Comes with some useful factory extras cooled seats Bowers & Wilkins audio, blind spot Mirrors and dab radio one owner low miles I’ve just done the timing belts gotta say it’s a great car 204BHP is adequate and it certainly isn’t slow but with the extra 70BHP the S Version must be very quick.

Just bought a 2010 3 ltr diesel xfs a few weeks ago. Very much enjoying it. 133k miles. Only thing I've had to do so far is a replacement rear pannel under the back bumper which holds the exhaust fixings. Totaly rotten through. Worth checking! Very comfortable car to drive. The lag in auto is a bit high revving in auto. Sport mode is great, although not much difference to driving in dif... Apart from the paddle gear box. Thanks for the video.

Sports mode + Dynamic and it's a totally different beast! Actually handles better too as the steering tightens up slightly. If there's any performance lag, check the MAP sensor, it's right on the top of the engine on the 3.Od. mine was clogged up. Very, very simple job even for a novice but don't poke anything into the hole as it may damage the sensor part. Cleaned it out with WD40 and left it to soak for 20 minutes then dry, and it was like having a new engine fitted!

@@severnsea3924 Agreed, also might be worth considering a gearbox service if it's over revving a lot. Common sign of a gearbox service needed. ZF, the manufacturers of the gearbox, have service centres around the UK, costs around £350-£400 if I remember correctly but well worth doing if the drive isn't silky smooth.

Jaguar's old slogan is as appropriate now as ever: "Grace, Space and Pace".

I have a 2010 XF-S portfolio and love it i came from e class merc not had to spend much other than a full service, only way i would get a XFR just for the supercharged V8 noise

Congratulations on posting a great and informative video! You’re one of the reasons (I watched a few 😊) why I bought my first Jaguar after owning a BMW (3 series) & Mercedes ( C, E, S) in the past, with Mercedes C class being the recent one. I’d been looking for the specific model with the right spec and to my luck I finally found one last week. A 2015 (just before they brought out the latest face lift) XF S 3.0 diesel portfolio with only 36k miles and fully loaded. It had everything I wanted, like the folding down seats and the sunroof. The car is spotless since the previous owner took really good care of it. So always been serviced by Jaguar and to my surprise the cam belt has also been changed on the last one. I have to say out of the cars I have owned driving a Jaguar XF S was indeed special and much better ride experience than Merc or especially the BMW. In simple words it was a completed experience of both comfort and sportiness. Picking it up this Wednesday from my local Evans Halshaw so can’t wait. Thanks a lot for sharing your experience once again 👍🏼

Fantastic review, title brought me in, local accent, we have a winner! Detail within the review was perfect, it flowed perfectly and is utterly jam packed, don't see many go to the effort of not only discussing the remaping figures, but also those for the lower output version of the same engine. 9.5/10 and that's from one picky sod. ps. where did you get timing belts changed for the £700 ish mark here?

Loved my xf until both turbos went . Had to replace both lower arms twice in 3 years and of course the dpf went . Other than that it was a fast cool car a mile eater for sure .

I've owned a 2013 XF for four years now. It's gorgeous inside and out, fun to drive and fairly reliable. The 3 Series is a different animal, more sporty and less luxurious.

There should be an oil level through the instrument cluster in this case.

To check the oil level you have to switch the engine off and leave it for at least 10 minutes. Then press the start button without your foot on the brake , so it switches on the ignition without starting the engine, then just cycle through the dash information a few times till the oil level shows on the screen.

Very nice intro to the XF. I have a 2010 3.0 Portfolio S and love the car. I bought it 2017 with 44000 miles on the clock (It now has 76000) The only problems I have had are replacing both front window regulators and a rear door lock module, other than that just the usual consumables (tyres not cheap. (20s all round with 285s on the rear and 255s on the front), discs and pads etc). I just had the cambelt done, and none of the garages around me would touch the car, had to go to the main Jaguar dealer to get the job done (£1600, wow...) Would I change the car? yes I would (if it becomes a write off) but only for a XJ. Love the car it's a beast with good old grandad comforts

It's generally considered that the 3L is a much better engine and doesn't cost any more to run.

Great video… What do you say about the XF 2.0 petrol version? More reliable than Diesel?

Nice review. Had mine for 18 months, same year and trim but 240bhp model, superb car. Completely trouble free, no squeaks or rattles anywhere. I don't get the problem with the lock/unlock buttons on the dash, I've never even given it a thought but I would say it's to ensure that you know whether you're locking the car or unlocking it. It could get confusing with just one button, as the car can be set to auto-lock the doors once you go above a certain speed. But regardless, it's hardly a problem. Quite surprised you didn't mention what Dynamic or Sports mode actually do, or that the vents rotate when the car is started and stopped, same as the gear control. As for the heated seats, I've seen a few videos with grumbles about the buttons being on screen, but since they're on the home screen it's no problem at all. You don't have to cycle through any other screens to get to the controls. Lots more features too that didn't get a mention.

The lock/unlock thing was just the use of two buttons instead of one like a Range Rover. Maybe it didn’t come across well but if they’d done the single button thing then they could have put the park sensor button where you can actually find it easily rather than taking your eyes completely off the car in front (which is when you need it activated) It’s just use of real estate.

@@Back_Road_Hero Yes I see your point now, Mine doesn't have the front sensors, so there's no button (AFAIK the button only deactivates the front sensors?) As per my last post, I always assumed the separate lock/unlock buttons were to prevent you accidentally unlocking instead of locking it; I didn't notice originally that the doors locked automatically above 5mph, so I in the case of a single button I might have pressed it thinking I was locking the car when in fact I would have been unlocking it. To be honest it's all just an added bonus to me, none of my previous cars have had dash mounted lock/unlocks buttons.

@@Back_Road_Hero The reason for the separate lock/unlock buttons on the dash is because of the auto locking feature, that locks the car as you drive away. According to preference you can have this feature turned on or off, but if there is more than one driver (say yourself, who prefers auto locking turned off, and your wife, who prefers it turned on), you might be unsure if the doors are locked or unlocked. Therefore by providing 2 separate buttons you know that you're definitely going to be locking (or unlocking) the car instead of thinking you've locked it when in fact you actually unlocked it, and vice versa. That's my understanding of it anyway.

here is a 2015 petrol 3.0 v6 in market (am in china ) almost 8yrs 130k kilometers . am considering to buy it .

​@@lukeferguson9010I've had a 2010 XF S for 6 weeks now and for the money it was pretty much the most power and torque I could get in a saloon. Far cheaper than the BMW and Audi equivalents. The 3.0 diesel is ultra smooth and the pull with 600nm is obscene if you're coming from a run of the mill 1.8 petrol or 2.0 diesel. A good way to enjoy a V6 before they're taxed like mad

Love the 3 and 5 ltr jag xf but you have to take that dpf out and stage 1 remap before it comes alive they are very good untill you unlock it you net better performance and better fuel economy too

We never had any real issues except the coolant manifold cracked and needed replacement.also suspension bushes. Ed

Both are theoretically galvanised but the x type is of course a slightly older car (2001-2009) where the XF started as the x250 in 2007 as a steel body but the x260 from 2015 used primarily aluminium. Ed

I've a 2013 2.2d and cam belt change is 60k, not 100k. Pity I didn't know when buying it at 57k! Great car, only niggle is slow gear change, perhaps I need a gearbox oil change.

Who told you this? Give Jaguar a call and confirm it. However time is also a factor so if it’s not been done it’s a good idea on a car almost 10years old. It’s overdue on time if not mileage. Ed

@@Back_Road_Hero thinking about I think you're right. The trigger was it being 7 years old required a new cam belt.

No mention of road feel, balance, wheel slip. Three times the price here in Australia of course, at that price id definitely have one. I enjoyed my X Type , and would love one of those, but not that colour...

@@Back_Road_Hero id assume it is a good driver's car and other video have said that. Based on the S Type chassis and the Ford Thunderbird it should be great. Maybe I just like to drive and like to hear opinions of the drivability. My life is to practic to drive a sedan, I need the space of an SUV. Id be interested to hear your review of you beloved RangeRover. Although I'd never buy one based on the very pore reliability history. I'm sure its lovely though... Thanks for the reply

The 2.2 diesel is ok. A bit noisy at idle. It is almost as thirsty as the 2.7/3.0 unit so the 6 cylinder is still the one to go for. Ed

I have a 2015 facelift (without the surprised-looking headlights!) 2.2 diesel XF R-Sport. I'm not a fan of diesels, but I like this one- 44mpg overall and 50+mpg on motorway trips. It has the 8 speed gearbox of course.

Looking at 2009 XF 4.2 V8 124K not sure if i should pull the trigger

Service history a must. Check suspension knocks. 4.2 is a robust engine. Ed

@@snoozinatthetop Regular oil and filter change is the most important, I do mine every 6 months or 5000k. The important thing with these is ALWAYS use the C1 class low ash oil.

I owned the 30 xfs diesel for 3 years purchased it with only 60000 miles. Start from the beginning the rear door locking system failed. The drivers side plastic rocker cover split and the egr unit failed as well took it for mot and the fog rear fog lights failed there are no fuses for them they are controlled by a pc board. Alternator failed front suspension coil snapped. The sound system would only work on the passenger side. 4000 miles on a set of tyres and I was using best tyres parelli Michelins Goodyear. The other side rocker cover cracked limp home mode again. The boot wiring harness failed had to repair the wiring. The car was an amazing thing to drive when it was working ok. The fuel consumption for a 3.0 engine was excellent 35 per gallon around town 48 to 50 on a run. Phoned jaguar to complain about the faults and they said they didn’t recognise the faults?

Thanks Philip. I realise that all cars go wrong and you’ve probably had it quite bad. You’re right when they work they’re brilliant. We were just lucky but it still cost us a pretty penny with suspension and coolant housing. Ed

Which is better the 3.0 without supercharger or 3.0 without supercharger petrol

I've not driven one but the Supercharged engine is the same as in the F-Type. For me, it would have to be the Supercharged version.

The XF came out in autumn 2007 not 2008

Great video although please never liken anything on a Jag to an Audi!!!!! Merc,BMW fine,interior is like a . . . Jag. . . or a Bentley . . . not an Audi. Drivers are from two entirely different planets!!!! Lol PS Thanks for the detailed button explanations etc

don't agree regarding the 2.7...the higher power 3.0d usually tend to crack the crankshaft because they can't handle all that power unfortunately

Yea exactly but the lower powered 2.7 tends to be 'more gentle' on the internals....great cars nonetheless

Its not the same engine one has a single turbo the S has twin turbos

No all v6 have 2 turbos even 2.7

Owning a jag xf has given me grey hair its that stressful, fault after fault and now the gearbox is failing (jumping like mad) and its only done 40k. Just not worth the money wont be buying another jaguar as long as i live absolute piles of garbage.

Try a gearbox service. Failing that you could get the gearbox valves replaced. It’s worth a try with such low mileage.

Owning a Jaguar XF for four years has been awesome. It looks great, it's fun to drive and fairly reliable. The ZF 8HP gearbox is OK.

Your battery is the issue.

Mmmmm sorry to add this but …. The jaguar XF .. it’s not actually a jaguar , but a discovery under its bonnet , known in motor trade as poor oil flow which causes the crank to simply sheer off at one end , or snap , which destroys your engine . The 2.7 & 3.0 are very prone to do this , also “”” restricted performance”” is a well known fault , cracked air intake manifolds , turbo actuator faults , gear box selectors are known to fail by either just not rising up , or poor soldering means you can’t select a gear , or it gets stuck in park , loads of issues with the XF , read all the many posts about the various problems .. I know it sounds like all doom & gloom … but it’s cold reality .. be aware .. before buying a used one .. or buy one with loads of warranty cover

All cars have their issues. The cranks on the 3.0 seem to be less prone to snapping but the issue there is revving from cold. I’ve always let my cars warm through. They all have issues just like everyone else. Ed

​@Back_Road_Hero Definitely Diesel for eating up the Motorway miles and long country runs 😉😊👍👍. The last Petrol I owned was a 1973 Mk3 Cortina that I had to do a full engine rebuild at only 95KMiles 😭. I've had Diesels ever since and just love the Torque and pulling power uphill. There brilliant in wet weather aswell, it's funny seeing Petrol car's broken down after going thru a puddle and the Diesels just take it in there stride.😊😊

Love them both. Have petrol on my 6 Series coupé and diesel on my XF saloon.
