    The opposite of addiction is connection. I am a struggling addict. I have people in my life that don't understand. I watched the TED Talk Johann Hari did about addiction while I was in a treatment program in the Maricopa County Jail. The things he learned in his time trying to understand addiction is fact. I have been a addict for more than 20 years and have never thought about my issue that way. Society as a whole shames addicts. Its wrong. If you don't believe it watch the show Intervention. I want to start a treatment program that doesn't focus on shaming the addict but reestablishing the connections lost because of this disease. I want this to happen more than anything right now and can not figure out where to start. If anybody has any ideas please leave them for me.

    With a "for profit" prison system, you really think we're going to spend money to get people OFF of drugs???

  • @Unclejamsarmy

    @Unclejamsarmy

    5 жыл бұрын

    Drake Iverson the vast majority (95% I believe) of prisons are govt, not private. I support abolishing private prisons too, but it isn’t even in the top 5 reasons we have had the drug war or addiction problems. The other issue is we DO spend money to get people off of drugs (not enough, not in every state yes) but we refuse to spend money to help these people more directly. Like johanns example where the govt in Portugal subsidized the wage of the addict so they’d get rehired in their profession. Today republicans like even the horrible Chris Christie who thinks weed should be federally and state illegal, including medicinally, also support pouring money into drug treatment programs (horribly ineffective, expensive, and poorly regulated residential rehabs mostly). But what they and lots of democrats will always oppose is spending money on making poor people’s lives better directly, unless *maybe* the people are super ill, or are children. While its progress and important to keep expanding access to drug treatment that fight is mostly won, even most of the craziest elected anti science drug warriors support that, the real fight now is to recognize that as hari pointed out the vast majority of people who try hard drugs don’t become addicts, making drugs illegal is not only a failure but counterproductive, and we need to examine and improve our society on a collective/social level that requires being more economically leftist.

    I agree with just about everything he said. However, being a former heroin addict, I know for certain that there are chemical hooks that make you physically dependent. The withdrawal is the worst pain and discomfort I’ve ever felt. It makes you wish you were dead. It took several attempts and drug assisted treatment to stay clean. 7 years later, I’ve come a long way, but the first month is the hardest because you must overcome the physical withdrawal. The next couple of months is breaking the emotional and mental dependence. He’s right that it takes the ability to be reintroduced into society with lots of support, but that comes after you break the physical dependence.

    All I know is our current system is beyond retardation. Change needs to happen. I don't know how we can call ourselves a free society when if you go to prison you can no longer vote, after you serve your time. That's not freedom, it's subjugation and down right evil. How can we call ourselves better than other societies when we are selves are perhaps worst because we pretend to be good but rather are monsters.

    I'm listening to this guys book and it's got me energized. The story about the chain gang had me clenching my fucking teeth I was so angry and upset. The more I learn about this, the more the word "Dystopian" comes into my head. The model we have right now is possibly the most oppressive, dystopian model you could cook up in response to drug use. AND WE KNEW THIS LONG BEFORE WE DECIDED TO PROHIBIT DRUGS! Every argument we use today, has been made over a god damn century ago. We somehow forgot how stupid this idea is, and are constantly applying post-hoc rationalizations to it. The Drug war needs to end.

    Amanda Szymczak Well, Canada legalizing marijuana will *hopefully* play a critical role in changing global drug policy. It'll fly in the face of both the UN, and especially America who have been the ones coercing the entire planet into compliance. It's not comprehensive drug legalization like I'd like. But once the world starts to concede the points about marijuana legalization, there'll only be a small few speedbumps left to clear up. Like the brutal misconceptions we all have about addiction. I hope psychedelics come next.

    I have a possible concern. You say the addiction is due to the nature of the cage. I know some people who live together and tend to all do the same batch of drugs when they do drugs. My question is, if you legalize all drugs you risk changing the cage to one which due to peer pressure more people do drugs. For the record I actually advocate the legalization of most drugs. Just a thought.

    Johann Hari is isolating the drug addict, ie the rat, in one maze or environment. If Hari had taken into content the entire environment and immediate forces, he may better understand why some individuals, possibly cultures, never rise above their present value- at best. The total drug environment sustains the drug culture, the drug effects, the drug benefits. It is not always an "individualistic" problem. And cannot so easily be solved by eliminating, removing, or substituting the society.

    When journalists try to talk science, they get alot right, but it end up with alot wrong also. Selling journalism makes you use our fears and feeling of morality as triggers. Agreeing with much of what is said do not make it right. And for everything I like with Maher, he has a "chemical" phobia that makes him misunderstand. We all have some of this feeling of phobia with things we can be harmful.

    This guy is completely WRONG when he says diamorphine (diacetylmorphine, also known as heroin) is given in US hospitals. It isn't. Ever. No exceptions. Heroin is Schedule I and is never given legally by any medical professional in the United States. His huge fuck-up on this point, which was so central to his argument, discredits his entire book, his competence, knowledge, and experience. What an embarrassment to those of us whose experiences have taught us casual drug use without serious consequences, including the use of heroin, is possible.

    No heroin is used in American hospitals. Heroin is a class I drug (no medicinal use is legal) and if he does not know that I am suspicious. Everyone will develop dependancy and tolerance to narcotics; take morphine for 21 days and you suffer withdrawal and the need for greater amounts over time. And there is good evidence that a certain proportion of individuals are quite susceptible to the other components of addiction: craving and obsession as well as continued use in the face of adverse consequences.
