Don't get frustrated! Great advice. But easier said than done on a complicated drawing like this.

I love the trike. So good. I have seen your painting on Pinterest. You have a way of teaching that suites me; simple, articulate and not too much fluff. Certainly one that i will follow. I have yet to move over to oils. You make the process seem doable for me. At this time, i am working in watercolors and acrylic. So much to learn, but that for me is the fun part.

I thought this is so cute so I thought, huh, I will give it a go. I really enjoyed the little bike painting. The little wheel in the back of the bike was looking a bit strange and I kept thinking what the heck am I doing wrong here. My wheel was a little too round so it didn’t have that looking from the top appearance so I ovaled it a bit and I think it helped to get the effect . The shadow is just amazing. Thanks for the tutorial for this little bike. Love your paintings and so happy you share your techniques. Thanks

I laughed so hard about your dad getting you a Sears bike instead of the almighty Schwyn bike. Reminded me of my boys. Started giving them money at 10 for Christmas so they could go shopping the day after Christmas and let them find their own gifts. They were so happy and I didn’t have to be hurt watching their disappointment with Moms uncool stuff that I spent time and money finding something they really didn’t care for. Maybe it is a boys thing. Thanks for that hysterical story.

Wow and wow! Wow, what a lot of usefulness and wow, what a complicated subject to draw! Watched it and plan to watch again. While some might have attention span problems with this format, I get pulled into the process and love it so much! Thanks for the long format and helpful dialogue!

Thanks for the real time video Michael. I usually like the quickies with the time lapse. But this was so nice to just sit back with my coffee and relax and spend an hour armchair quarterbacking the drawing phase. You are very good with perspective. It is true it is much easier to see where a stroke should go when you’re watching it on a tiny screen. And not actually the person trying to draw the picture. LOL. Great job!

Happy you mention the Schweinn Stingray. The 5 speed ones were the Krate series, red - apple-krate, orange, lemon and so on. I got a 3 speed knock off instead. And some kid store it! Ha.

Yes, I remember the Krate versions of the Stingray, but the one I wanted was the sixties model with the normal front tire, slick in the rear!

I did a painting almost exactly like this when I was a student at UCSC (Chiarito) back in the 80's. Love your work.

Thank you so much for doing full length videos; your process is so logical; but you achieve results that never fail to impress and/or surprise me. Even when I think “this one’s not working” in the end it always does. The full length video style is a great way to show that one should push through the weird phases and how easy it is to correct seeming disasters.

Loved this. Had to laugh that everytime I noticed something off you immediately said the same thing! Beautifully done. Oh, and you mentioned having a brother named Kevin, well I have brothers named Michael and Kevin and they, too, would often plan out what they thought was the coolest gift to get together for Christmas. One year when they were about 3 and 4, they wanted football helmets. In January, my mom got an early morning call from the neighbor wondering why the boys were playing football in the snow barefoot and in pajamas at 7am!!! LOL!!! They snuck out of the house just after sunrise and took their slippers off so they wouldn't get wet!! 😂😂 The things little boys will do!!

That’s a very helpful demonstration and because it was so detailed you could follow your thought process. It’s also a good exercise to do with a brush rather than a pencil so that you can’t sweat over the detail too much. Excellent result too!

Love your paintings, wish I could paint as loose! You put a coat of retouch varnish on your pieces before you frame them. Do you recommend a more permanent varnish 6 months to a year after completion? Also, you’re really good at drawing, any artist parents, grand parents?

It's great to see your painting process, this one in particular has helped me figure out tone solutions for the shadows and the built over darker darks for the metal. 2 years ago I made a big one with 3 bycicles on the street and it was hell. Btw, it's incredible how you build up the painting from just a sketch in sienna considering the subject. I go by grid when the object is complicated and has a weird angle. You are a big step ahead sketching. Ps: sorry bout the stupid pic on IG today, it was mostly to tease all the women on my family cause they are an army and they are all beautiful...Im known for being irreverent and goofy inside my closed group of people. Today I made it public LOL.

Had a fun weekend. Your video gave me the confidence to try this. So, I made gesso with pumice boards, printed out your tricycle photo and attempted my first dashed off ( loose) alla prima oil painting from the red tricycle photo. I vowed to not stress and fuss and vowed to go with it however it turned out. I tried to complete it in an hour but it turned out closer to two. But for me, a record. I was really amazed. I’m pretty pleased with it. It has both that that loose painterly feel I want and a messiness I do not want. But when it dries in a few days, I think I can clean up the messiness without loosing the freshness. I still have a lot to learn but trying this was a really good experience.

Yes, I absolutely love the long form. It really shows your thought process and it helps a whole lot. As with all your videos, I love your loose technique. It helps me get the stick out of my own ass. It's a bigger struggle than I would've imagined to loosen up and just enjoy it. One thing that your videos don't show (because it comes natural for you) is the struggle that goes on on the palette. Getting the right values and colours is brutal when you're a beginner. Anyway, I'm going to go start on a painting now, with all of this in the back of my mind. I always watch one of your videos for inspiration before I get started. A small technical suggestion: get one of those clip-on microphones so your voice has less roominess ;)

Niiice. I once sketched a biker's Harley. About 20 minutes in he sez "how hard can it be? you can draw 2 round circles." I told him circles are never round. He let out a big laugh. I let out a sigh of relief.

The waggle is unconscious. I wasn’t even aware of it until I started editing videos. I’ve noticed other painters do it as well.

So, here’s a question: When you have the photo reference, you have the edges of your composition ( boundaries of the photo or lines drawn onto the photo to crop it) to judge placement of key points within large shapes. Got that. When doing plein air, is it difficult to judge relationship to edge of the canvas? Do you hold the viewcatcher up while making marks on the canvas, at least until the big shapes are placed. Would like to hear your experiences with this.

I use the viewfinder to get a compositional idea, but I don't usually used it after that. Once I've got the idea, I put down the viewcatcher and start playing around with shapes.

Quite a nice little oil sketch. I'm sure given time that you would have changed some details. eg the back wheel tyre is too thick on the bottom section (as we're looking at it from above) and the shadow of the front tyre needs to be stretched out into an oval shape.

Should the shadow on front wheel be stretched out a bit or you looking at a different perspective

Are you using a synthetic brush here? It looks kinda soft

- michael, it was like going with , going along in your explained thoughts, in a soothing inception of , as it happened , felt as therapeutic as creativity can be, no pressure, no rush , but productive, immediately productive, hey, “” Series presentation # 2 maybe”. ; )

What about painting in public. How do you handle it. I’m actually fairly competent, and I want to do it, but far too self conscious and freaked out to do it. Your paintings and vids are great.

You could look for a somewhat private place for your first few paintings. Most people get over the fear once they're set up and painting. The process requires so much focus it's hard to think about anything else once the brush is in hand. Just go for it and enjoy!
