Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

I started painting about 5 weeks ago and I'm laughing at myself after watching this video. It never occured to me to wipe off a bad section of my picture. Not once. It's too funny, but now I'm grabbing my last picture and scraping off the part where the blue and orange turned green...So, thank you!!

Thank you, Chris. I’m gearing up to begin my journey in oil painting. I’ve been an artist since age 4 but had just been mostly drawing and charcoal. My grandfather got me oils at age 13 but with no real direction, I lost interest and felt like I was a failure. I’m much older now and have some time so I want to pick up again I feel I have basics of color mixing but I needed some fresh ideas and coaching. Thank you again for your honest and straightforward suggestion on oils and basics. I will recommend you to my friends and others who show an interest in oils and the rewards of painting and art.

When it comes to painting portraits or living animals/plants from photos, I would say that it can be useful but not needed. To explain this, I found that if you draw a subject often enough with or without a photo you get to a point where you just know the image and its structure and can do it from heart without even seeing the subject and even put it into forms you have not seen an example of because you know how the structure works. This is in the same way you can all probably all draw a brick without having a brick in front of you, you know what they look like. Its just a bit harder for living things because they configure into so many shapes. Having practised with a face often enough you could probably create many new ones in your mind to paint and build a colour map on them to suit

I love gesso boards. Davinci brand from Jerry’s Artarama are the best ones I’ve tried. The flat ones have both a smooth and a textured surface on either side you can choose. I paint with acrylics so the slickness of the surface isn’t as much of an issue because it all dries quickly and you can layer in.

I am going from acrylics to oils. I have tried oils in the past and always felt I was in over my head. But, I loved them. The problem I had was back then there was not an internet or youtube and the books available to learn from were terrible. I had questions I could not find answers to and wondered about things, ect. In the end I was just wasting time and not improving. But, over the years I wanted very much to paint in oils. I just found acrylics boring. I did work in colored pencils off and on and loved them. And learned alot from using that medium. Now I am ready to learn. I am older but, wiser. I understand things from watching various videos but, honestly, yours is like taking a course. I am learning so much and things I have questions about I find on one of your videos. I cannot express how much I appreciate them. Like you I am self taught and come from an artistic family but, I don't have the talent my youngest brother has. But, he paints in acrylics so help with oils is mute. One thing: I have used Rosemary and Co. brushes for years. Anyone thinking about ordering them, do so. They are the best and the prices are wonderful.

I’m interested in switching to oils and your hoping to learn from your vids. It’s amazing you taught yourself and you’re so advanced. I teach myself every art mode - acrylics has been fun and easy tho def not the easiest mode - my paintings aren’t that great bc I’m not naturally talented painter… it’s not my forté but it’s my favorite - it’s a struggle to teach yourself but I won’t give up. There’s sooo much info i don’t know yet there’s so much to learn even tho I’ve been doing this for 4 yrs. I took a long break and did jewelry for awhile - when I started back a few months ago it was as if I never painted 😂 I paint every single day. It’s extremely therapeutic & improves creativity for my other projects.

I started painting for first time 3 months ago and have been self teaching. Up until 2 weeks ago I focused on Acrylic, gouache and watercolour. Discovering solvent free oils I have started to paint with oils. This topic grabbed my attention because I notice oil painting requires a VERY different approach and I would like to SEE you demonstrate HOW you paint with oil versus acrylic. For example I love florals and painting a floral with acrylic is not at all similar due to the nature of the oil paint. I’m not totally sure how to adapt my technique when using oils. Seeing some tangible examples of how to lay down paint etc and layer colours would be so helpful. I’m loving and hating the oils at this point just because I’m now learning to adapt what I was doing with my acrylic work 😂like your straight forward and simple instructions. Thanks for dedicating time to share your experience

I too struggle with blending skin tones with acrylics. There are paints out there that make it much easier like liquid acrylic paints that give you fluidity without dilution of the pigment strength that you would get using tube paint and mediums. I also overcome the problem with multiple glazes and finger smudging.

Thanks for all of the excellent videos and all of the painting instruction that you provide. It has been greatly beneficial to me as I am very new to oil painting and art in general. I have a question about photographing your paintings. When painting loose the painting should be viewed from 7 feet or so to be fully appreciated. How do you photograph your "loose" paintings for Instagram or whatnot and still maintain that distant perspective or is it just not possible? My photos of my paintings tend to be much worse (in my opinion) than the actual painting but it is the only medium for people to view my work. Thanks.

Great advice, Chris! Re: gesso board- adding pumice gains some tooth. Re: wet-in -wet drying time. It seems that if I don’t do all my wet in wet the first day, say I come back 24 hours later, the paint is too tacky to work with. At this point, I usually just wait several days until all dry and go back on top with a new layer to make any changes. Thoughts on this. I’m not really interested in experimenting with Liquin.

I am transitioning from acrylics to oils and I can't find an answer to my question. I paint landscape and always do an under painting. Can I do an underpainting with oil paint? I was thinking of doing an acrylic underpainting and then the rest of the paining in oil. Is that a bad idea?

I have a question, there is something i have been struggling with which is I'm afraid of letting my hand act freely when I paint. It's like the painting ends up too edgy or flat with no much contrast. Is the some kind of practice i can do to let my hand paint more freely?

When you said your painting looks flat with no contrast you should try learning about values it really helps when putting shadows mid tones and highlights in! I am late so you might already know this tho haha.

Hey Chris! I’ve got a question. I’ve looked at your videos on the fat over lean rule and mediums and other videos here on KZread and I was wondering if it might be harmful to the archival-ness to use thinner in paint to “wash” over the canvas. I know with acrylic a lot of artists discourage the use of water when painting because it can mess with the binder of the paint. I know oils and acrylic are completely different. But I still wonder if there’s a medium You use in place of thinner in early stages and you switch To get “fatter” kinda like with acrylics you have a medium to thin and thicken paint. (Although Andrew tischler said it’s not a great idea to mix mediums in paintings).

I painted on store bought gesso-ed canvas. It felt like painting on plastic. Terrible. I'm the weirdo that prefer to paint on unprimed canvas...

I frankly don't see a difference in painting from a photo or life in front of you. You are still using a visual reference. Now painting just from "memory", no visual reference at all, now THAT'S a real talent.

You say “painting from life is best” but you give no reason why, you just say it. How about saying the pros and con of life vs. photo.
