I remember being so excited as some "experts" were coming from the US to help out on a project. I thought ,great, I will pick their brains for all the technical questions I had about my part of the project. Furthermore, I remember peppering them with all these questions but soon realised they didn't have a clue, let alone a solution. I then knew the term "expert" is applied way too liberally. From then on when ever I was introduced as an "expert" I would tell the audience I'm not, but I have met experts. That's not to say I haven't been very impressed by the technical ability and intelligence of some of my fellow workers. I have always tried to use such people as a trusted resource. I worked in IT for nearly 40 years and have often joked they pay me to do my hobby. The old saying "do what you love and never work a day in your life".

Couldn't agree more with "don't do it if you're not passionate". The mental demand on IT guys and Engineers of all sorts is HUGE, if you're not passionate about tech but you try to find work in it, you'll possibly have a bad time. Only exception I can think of is if you land in a company that invests a lot of time and effort into training you.

There are a lot of people in networking and other areas of tech who either got into it from other lines of work, or moved from a different discipline, and they are quite often not young. So by narrowing the scope of your question around advice to only a "young person", you are alienating everyone else.

So I’m not sure how that affects the need for network engineers? I feel as though whether we’re needed or not has not changed, more so where/how we’re needed.

The key to getting a IT job is "who you know." Ever notice, that all these senior or high level tech people. If you ask them how they started, the story always goes back like 25 years ago. I started on Apple -2 and, I was hired to sweep the floor, but they need someone to reboot the Apple -2 and now, I am CEO....And, then you ask them how do you get a job. We are hiring, but, we just filled that position, we hired my best buddies, son, we like him, he plays golf with us.

These days though, these companies require all three formal qualifications and that’s why they will always have less skilled developers than the hackers they would never hire. I could never work for these types of corporations. They bore me…they only care about certs and degrees etc. I’d rather do what I do now; find vulnerabilities and sell them to either the company or perhaps an agency. There’s too many stuck up people at places like Cisco…and let us not forget how Cisco helped China develop the Great Firewall of China. So id hardly be proud to work for them.

That doesn’t mean it’s obsolete. And take it from someone who’s been doing this fulltime for 30 years and been programming for 40. The actual software development part is only 20% of your job maybe 60% as a junior. The other 80% is listening to requirements to developments in the business and coming up with suggestion to provide business value with your product(s). I literally spend 5% of my time coding now. 15% technical design and the rest is getting functional clarity and identifying issues and solving those. So, no worries and if you want guaranteed job also take a very practical elective like welding, or electronics repair or electrical installations. Those jobs never go away.

Being unqualified is part of being in IT. That’s why our business is so infantile. I’ve studied EE because there was no tradeschool or BSc level CS back in 1990, that was all MSc level. And I didn’t want to study business IT, I’m an engineer. And I’ve ended up as a software architect for medical and power systems (mission critical software), tech lead for security and operating systems and I’ve always felt an imposter. I also don’t do certifications nor do I look for them in people. They are a marketing cash grab and I found that they proof nothing. I had a CSSP at my banking client who literally couldn’t reverse engineer anything and focused on tiny documented theoretical security issues and missed the wide open door in a design gap in a solution 😂We are a weird infantile business and I realized that when I went to IBM and then saw that the small software house I came from doing medical systems was far more mature than IBM will ever be. And that already felt like garage engineering to me. Not at all like me internship at Rohde und Schwarz or designing hardware for researchers in hostile environment like on Antarctica. Product engineering is so much more mature than sheer IT.

Agree with everything said in this interview, except the part about attitude over experience. You need to have the experience to pass HR and automated bots 1st and get an interview with the manager and senior staff to show your "I want to learn attitude" so yea not so sure this advice work in real life unfortunately.

  • @davidbombal

Certs and experience get you to the interview, but I agree with Fletcher - I would rather work with someone with the right attitude than someone with lots of experience and a terrible attitude. Some of the most difficult experiences I've had are working with people with a bad attitude - it can poison an entire team and really affect your health. Much better to work with people who have the aptitude to learn something and a great attitude. You can teach technical skills to someone with the right attitude, aptitude for the technology and a hunger to grow. Toxic people can really affect your health however.

@@davidbombal I also agree with him, I would rather work with somebody with a cool attitude and will to learn than with some ego person for sure. I am just saying that where I live(Ireland) you will rarely get the opportunity to show anything if you do not meet 80% of the requirements from job descriptions, maybe it is just me but that is my experience, I have a cert(CCNA, CompTIA S+, working on OSCP) and working experience in IT for over 6 years(as sysadmin or network engineer) and last year, when I was looking for a job, was super hard to get 1st interview. Anyway great Interview, thank you for reply :)

@@davidbombalI prefer to work with people with good attitude AND a lot of experience. The problem is that experience gives you a lot of insight, and quite often you are the bad guy with a bad attitude because you are "narrow minded", you are not "agile", you are not *insert whatever current buzz phrase* .... That's exactly when experienced people become the "problem"... Another problem is that many people will look only on attitude and you will end up with people with Dunning Kruger effect. People who have good attitude and will agree with anything just to keep the "good attitude", but they actually don't have experience or knowledge to execute. That's when things actually start to break apart!

Who's saying networking is dying?? With the advancement of technology there will always be damand for people who know about networking whether that be on the software side or hardware. Heck, with the machine learning field gaining fast traction it opens us up to alot of security vulnerabilities as well. Recently Microsoft fired alot of folks in their ethics department, which scares me. There's alot we don't know about on how A.I will effect the world, negatively or positively. I know it's a meme that we always talk about robots and terminator. But it is just 1 small misstep away from that becoming a reality and a rude wake up call for humanity
