I really like the conversational type flow of this episode. Maybe mix one of these in occasionally? It definitely added a new dynamic to things. Of course, please don't stop the hard-core nerdy stuff like solar, networking, etc.

She (wish I knew her name) is a great addition to the channel I think you need to keep her around.. As for clients I just use my PC. I got so tired of all the other needing to be restarted or sluggish response times. The Plex HTPC and/or Plex desktop both work without any issue (for me at least) and the other providers are all available on PC in one form or another.

I was a dedicated Roku user since the first time I started using Plex. Went from a Roku Angry Birds box to a new one each year. Then I was gifted a Fire Stick. I've been replacing my Rokus with Amazon devices as they go out since. The Amazon streaming devices are solid. I do use the microphone button on the remote when using Plex's search option instead of trying to type with the app or on screen keyboard. Much quicker.

I just upgraded from an older Roku to a Nvidia Shield on my primary TV. I knew it would be an upgrade but I didnt realize just how much better it would be.

Awesome, loved the different approach, different people have different points of view, great to approach from different points of view. Loved it.

she seems to be a good one. :) great addition to your channel. I just got new tv with Roku built in here is hoping it works tv is for amcrest cameras with dahua firmware and a tv for watching Roku and Netflix and plex.

I use my Nvidia Shield for Plex, helps that we use it for Netflix and other media streaming services. Seems to work fine, but I don't have experience of other boxes.

I used to use an Amazon 4K Fire Stick but since I have gotten my Nvidia Shield Pro, that's all I use. As far as Plex goes, I have a lot of TV shows encoded using a lot of different codecs & the Shield Pro direct plays them all with no issue. The 4K Fire Stick was constantly transcoding certain codecs & didn't process certain audio streams without transcoding. I have an older pc I am using for my Plex Server at the moment until I get my Simply Nuc Plex Server. Who's the young lady, by the way? I thought you were going through a messy divorce or did I miss something? I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving weekend.

Shield TV Pro (2019) for my main LG OLED77CX TV setup (with a 5.1.2 sound system hooked up right now). Audio format support the main reason like you said. Next favorite is a Fire TV Stick (have a 2018 I travel with, and Max for my TV up in Philly). Amazing to me I can Direct Play/Stream (what's the difference?) off my Plex server back home when I'm traveling. Only drawback on the 2018 is no DV support, but does have it on the Max. Have a Apple TV 4K (2017) same version as you that I just moved to my bedroom LG OLED55C6 TV hooked up there. I can view DV 4K movies there, which I had trouble with other clients I tried (Fire Stick 2018, CCwGTV, Roku 4K Stick). Apple TV in my bedroom works perfect cause that TV can't do 4K 60hz, only 30. I have Harmony Hub Remotes thorughout my house so don't use any of the device's remotes. Really good video, a bit long prob could have been trimmed down some.

How's the Fire stick for direct playing 4k remuxes from plex? I currently use the Nvidia Sheild 2019 tube and of course i get the ram stuttering issues. I use lossless audio tracks as well with atmos and DTSX

@@mountainmonkey15 Haven't really delved into those yet. I only ripped Gladiator 4K which has some video codec (I can't think of right now) why it wouldn't play on the Fire Stick (2018). Did get confirmation from someone who had it as a 4K Remux and was able to view it. Think the Max is what you want to future proof you if Audio support isn't needed. If it is, buck up and get the Shield TV Pro (2019, till a new version is released).

Jason has a girlfriend? I figured his nerdiness scared the women away. Maybe there is a glimmer of hope for me!!!

The Mi Box S was the best option for setting up a local media server for a few of my family members without internet. Really wish Plex would make a local player for Android TV.

Great review. I only use nVidia Sheild only because when I purchased it it was the best option at the time. I am not in a hurry to change because I only have one TV. I also have a HomeRun Antennae based Device that integrates well with nVidia Sheild, the only problem with that is the version of Home Run I have fills up the space on the nVidia Sheild with shows that are PVR'd. I could fix this problem by upgrading to the HomeRun device with an onboard PVR.

There’s an Echo in nearly every room in my house. Great for music and smart home stuff. Along with that every TV in my house has a version of Fire TV. My main 75” So y TV has a Fire TV 4K with two Echo Studios. I run Plex off Fire TV and it works great. My server is an Intel PC with Windows 10 and all my movies are on my Synology NAS. Works for me! BTW, before I got into Fire TV, all my TV’s had Apple TV 3’s or 4’s. I too quit using them because the 3’s didn’t have an App Store and I HATED THEIR REMOTES! Anyway, never really looked back. Lastly, I do wish Amazon would stop pushing so many ads at us.

Got the Shield for the bedroom a while back and an Intel NUC for the front room (when the ex left she took the shield so I got another) They do everything I need tough I didn't realise the Fire Cube could be a contender. If I ever mine enough ETH to move out of this shoe box I might consider something like that but I'd never get prime or any other subscription service.

Ouch! I love the Apple TV for PLEX. Sure the remote is easily lost and can be a bit touchy (turn down the sensitivity) but it is by far the best PLEX device I have used. We have Roku and XBox also and neither can touch how quickly the videos load and the speed of jumping around in a video with the Apple TV. No, I don't work for Apple. Side note....my brother has the newer remote for the Apple TV and it is a huge upgrade from the first one.

I haven’t used Plex on anything else (other than IOS) but I love using Plex on my TCL Roku TV. It’s very smooth. Plus I just love the TCL/Roku experience. 🤷‍♂️

Have you guys tried the NVIDIA Shield as a Plex client? I am considering it because of the AI upscaling. My Plex has a lot of old DVDs on it and they are 480p or lower, so good upscaling is a big deal for me.

Have a couple Roku TV's. The volume buttons on the side work for the TV. Probably not programmable for a Roku box on another TV.

The Roku remote works on the TV volume out of the box, if you get an integrated Roku television. I love mine.

I used to use a roku, but eventually moved away largely due to the lack of unicode font support. Caused problems for Japanese text in Plex descriptions and names.

For any fellow Plex users out there, I would like to share my experience with remotes. One of the best additions to my home set up was getting a good cheap universal remote. I use the Inteset universal programmable remote model #INT-422-3. Works flawlessly with the Nvidia Shield, Roku Ultra, Apple TV, and the Fire TV (with an extra USB IR emitter). The only thing that you miss out on is voice control. It is totally worth the $25 to get that remote.

What about the codec on the cube? My issue is about playing Plex direct streaming vs transcoding.

Any benefit to using an Apple TV as a Homekit hub over Home Assistant?

The global subtitles settings on Roku clashing with the in-app subtitles settings is one of the most irksome aspects of Roku.

Yes! Every time I think “do I really need an Apple TV on my Roku TV” that thought ends as soon as anything with subtitles is played. Terrible implementation on Roku’s part.

With logitech ceasing to make harmony and leaving the universal remote space, is it worth doing an episode on remotes that reduce the number of remotes needed to run a simple setup and a complex setup?

Switch the volume buttons with the Siri buttons on the side and it's there. I can't tell you how many times I've hit those stupid side buttons by mistake.

The Roku works for volume and power on/off with no issues for me.

I personally have been curious about the distros of Lennox built specifically for this.

I agree about the Apple TV remote, but you can use any remote with It, I use the harmony remote

The new Apple remote is great

There is one test that I would like to see on both the Shield and the new Amazon Cub. The Shield pixelates on OTA live TV on 1080p channels when the video panning like in football and other sports. Does the Cub do the same thing? It is my understanding that it can not decode mpeg2video in 1080p and this is on all Shield models. Thanks for you good work.

Yeah I just bought my parents a Roku 4k because they were having some weird issues with the apps built into their smart tv, and the roku remote only controls the volume on the tv. This is a problem as we have their tv audio piped into a surround system with an optical cable. So no it isnt just you having the issue with your roku.

I've had good results with the Roku Express 4k but I mostly use the windows or android app

I love subtitles too because many many MANY movies balance their speech volume levels horrendously bad.

I'm not in no way an apple fan boy, but I do happen to have an Apple TV 4k 2021. I am pretty happy with it. My only gripe is audio pass-through using Plex, it's not supported. Does the Amazon Fire TV Cube support audio pass-through on Plex?? As far as the headphones goes, wtf Roku? U can use any Bluetooth headphones with the Apple TV, and the volume buttons on the remote can control the volume on the TV/sound bar or AVR. BUT if the Amazon Fire TV Cube does audio pass-through on Plex I'd try it out, and maybe replace my 3 Apple TV 4K boxes.

I think you also need to test the Plex client app on your smart tv. I run the plex app on my Samsung tv with no issues

This was awesome! I actually prefer my htpc. The wife prefers the apple tv 2nd gen due to the new remote.

@@y2adre Yeah I've never had a problem with Kodi delivering the right audio, which suggests it's an issue with Plex. Just got tired of always tweaking Kodi. Have not just switched to a Shield and the early signs are pretty sweet

The Fire TV Cube does transcoding constantly when roku knows so many file types and Direct Plays a bunch. Fire TV Cube is great though when it comes to normal people using it and it’s Alexa capabilities. Just gonna bring your server to its knees if you have a so so server when there’s multiple TV Cubes chewing away

Get Nvidia Shield Pro and Direct Play Everything, no more transcoding local streams

I have 5 4K Roku Ultras. 4 of them control volume on their TV just fine. The 5th is connected through a video receiver and it controls the volume on the amp. Not sure what Jason's configuration problem is with his but he's become a FireTV fanboy so my post only benefits others. 🙂

I would LOVE to know how yours works. I am with Jason in this boat and mine won't control any of the TVs that it is connected to. (2) new SONY 4k's (1) Visio 1080p or my older Panasonic Plasma. I would love to get mine to work.

Roku. It has offline streaming plex if the internet goes out. If provide drops out for say 2 or 3hrs roku can still stream plex app.

Seems like that's pretty much up and running now. It's not the most complex setup.

In my experience I like the roku streaming box.

The one that I wish you would have reviewed was the Chromecast with Android TV. It has a similar effect of the Fire Cube, but with many more apps available.

Rocku will control tv volume. We have a few and they all work. One client to rule them all is the Nvidia shield imo.

Harmony Elite remote. Best. Remote. Ever! Throw all the others in the drawer or bin. Paired with the Shield and Emby…can’t be beat!

People shit on the Apple TV remote, but I use it as a daily driver and while it’s not the best, it’s also not super terrible. I’ve just gotten used to it. That being said, there’s a part of me that wants the AppleTV to break so that I have an excuse to get the newest remote.

If you have AppleTV 4K with Siri remote… and you use AirPods Pro. It is by far the best.

I have a ton of issues with anything Fire in my house. Things don't load, things don't work, things are slow, Plex doesn't like it either. And it could be due to my wireless setup, I understand that. But the Roku works far better than anything I have ever used from Amazon. For my house, it's Roku all the way.

The Shield does a great job but I mostly use my Xbox X for everything. Everything works great.

Roku… I love it over Amazon because it’s clean and not as busy. I stayed at a friends house this summer who had Amazon and my wife and I had difficulty navigating through the cluttered mess of content.

Main living room we use the Apple TV 4K, maybe I've just become accustomed to their crappy remote. I actually returned the Amazon TV Cube

We use a 4k Apple TV and only in the last few years did I realize the Samsung TV remote controls it! The default remote is terrible! This is the only reason I keep the Apple TV because the TV remote seems to control it by default along with the TV volume making it painless just to jump in bed and throw on something quick.

Apple 4K TV every day, although with a Harmony Elite remote. I have a 4K Fire Stick as a backup device, but it rarely gets used.

Yeah the glass Apple TV remote is crap. I use the old school silver first gen remote with my Apple TV 4K. It works great. The Apple TV 4K is a great Plex streamer too. I love to binge watch my cable shows on the Apple TV go apps. I plan on getting the new Apple TV update model. You can use Bluetooth headphones on the Apple TV 4K too. They work great

HAD A PLEX SERVER for 7 years now. I just upgraded/switched to my 3rd PLEX Desktop. 32GB of RAM & 2 - 14TB Hard Drives mirrored using Windows 10 Pro 64bit RAID 1. All hardware free from work they didn't need anymore. It is good to be I.T. I share over 1600 movies & over 100 TV shows in 1080p to friends and family around the country.

Can you do one of these on plex player software?

Anything with Alexa in it is a non-starter for me. If I want to watch TV on my Plex server, I don't want to have to wade through Amazon ads while searching for the Plex player. I recently upgraded my Roku Premiere 4K to a Roku StreamBar on a Black Friday sale, and I love it. (Using a 4K Roku allows Direct Stream of x265 video.) What I gathered from watching the first half of this video (I couldn't take any more) is that she is more familiar with the Fire, therefore she prefers it, and therefore she uses it more, and therefore she prefers it... ad nauseum.

I have tried most and still prefer the Apple TV. Only thing missing is no kodi. I have MrMC and plex. Prefer kodi to get actor details so wish could get on Apple TV. I know workarounds but dont want to keep reinstalling

Im not an apple fanboy, but when it comes to “real world” the appletv 4K (current or old) is the winner, IMO. Speedy. Clean home screen with no ads. The ATV plex app works, and has no bugs. Subtitles work, and are properly placed for 2.35:1 projection users. Clicking on actors takes you to their other films. The playback UI is standardized across the other apps. The old remote was great once you added a rubber case, (especially if you like to FF and RW frequently) the new remote is even better. Disregarding the atv because you have a remote bias is a bummer.

The Fire Cube looks great in every way, EXCEPT for the lack of Chromecast Built-In. That is a most-used feature and not having it is a deal-breaker in this household.

22:00 Are you suggesting the Amazon Fire Cube is better than an Nvidia Shield? Because that, good sir, is incorrect.

My roku volume control's my TV volume.

8:40 Volume on Roku remote are for the Headphone or earphone connected on the remote it self, used that for longtime with kids, but FireTV have Bluetooth so bye bye Roku ! 16:45 Not to defend the Roku Ultra, but it show right on the box that you can plug Headphone right in to it 🤣 so can move freely with the remote and headphones, but I like the Bluetooth better 😜

Every time i go on KZread ,I end up on Amazon buying more stuff ,Started with the Chromecast ,didnt like using my phone for a remote, apple TV was next , then Roku Tv TCL , Nvidia shield ( side note ) Shield didnt like streaming 4k movies from Plex WIFI , Now got Fire sticks to pull up my Wireless cams on my Tv'S After using Fire Sticks its my go to Streamer 1 Firestick 2 Roku 3 Shield 4 Apple TV 5 Chromecast laying around collecting dust .

Disappointed to see the FireTV Cube has no Ethernet port and the dongle to add it only supports 100Mbps.
