Here's how we made some real life mind controlled Dr. Octopus arms featured in Spider-Man 2 as well as Spider-Man comics. The arms feature four arms total mounted to the users back. The two lower arms have precision ability and feature 14 independently moving joints that allow it to move in the classic snake like method. The two upper arms feature some high strength pneumatics that allow the user theoretically to life upwards of 300 pounds although so far only half that weight has been tested.
The arms are controlled with joysticks and also feature mind control capabilities with the help of an EEG interface. When the user is focused, the robot will activate!

I would have gone a different route for this project, likely vertebrae-like segments made of 3D-printed aluminum linked together to form each arm, so they very closely resemble what we see in the movie. And to move them, many pneumatic artificial muscles inside of them to control them. 6 or more, all in the center of the arms, since they're vertebrae-like and would have a hollow space in the middle. Could be computerized with an onboard AI algorithm that not only learns how to move the arms in their environment (like Boston Dynamics robots do) but also can decode your thoughts just from a typical consumer-grade EEG toy. Just an idea, if you ever want to revisit this project 😉

As a researcher in Brain computer interfaces, I would suggest getting into motor imagery BCI classification. Basically when you imagine either of your arms, or legs moving you are able to send a signal from your motor cortex. For your right arm, you should listen to your left motor cortex, for left arm your right motor cortex etc. With a little help of machine learning you can get a good accuracy for this device to be mind controlled.

Instead of servos, try hydraulics. There was a robot arm design a few years ago that was like 3 sturdy tube-bags that, when completely filled with fluid, stuck out straight and supported each other. You could bend the arm in a given direction by releasing pressure and letting some of the fluid out of one tube, making the arm less-rigid in that direction so the other 2 tubes would bend it that way, then straighten the whole thing by refilling the tube. Get a great range of motion by adding more tubes.
