I agree!! I do like the others but Foxes afloat is my favorite. I just recently found Narrowboating and love them. I am from an old Yorkshire family who left England in 1620’s. So I was really unaware of the canal’s and the history that Colin tells is fascinating to me since I love all History especially English, Scottish, and Wales. All parts of family history. Keep up the good work!

Thanks to everyone who asked about the stone next to Bridge 24 - Wood End Lift Bridge. I've been reliably informed that the stone was placed by the family and friends as a memorial to Gerry Moore, a young, local firefighter who lived on a narrowboat near the bridge just outside Marple where stone is laid. He died in the mid-1980's from carbon monoxide poisoning after his water heater malfunctioned 💜

Really good show lads very informative with a laugh. - re the windless on the Turf Lea lift bridge - these windlasses were made at British Waterways Newark Repair Yard on the River Trent. They were known as ‘Granny Pumps’ not sure exactly why but guess because they were so easy to operate. The case was made from SG cast iron (spheroidal graphite) as it is ductile. With a casappa bidirectional pump inside. Each revolution delivered the same amount of oil in either direction. Oil is pumped into the hydraulic ram that lifts the bridge. The hydraulic ram has two pipes leading into it one to the cap end and the other to the rod end. To cap end (for lifting) has a larger volume to fill and produces the greater force, this is why it took 80 turns to lift. The rod end (lowering the bridge) has a 50mm piston rod in it and therefore less volume hence 50 turns to lower. This side produces less force hence used for the lower of the bridge - hope this helps 👍

Morning guys, reference the lift bridge. The mechanism is hydraulic with the crank being a hydraulic pump, the pumps are not very efficient and they tend to leak internally when pumping up against the weight of the bridge but on lowering they basically freewheel down so hardly leak at all. Hope I have explained it well. Keep on cruising Stan Alison and Nutmeg 🐕

He lived on his Narrowboat and was well known along the Peak Forest and Macclesfield Canals being known locally as "Gerry Moore man of the countryside." Unfortunately Gerry was found dead on his Narrowboat sometime in the early 80's having succumbed to Carbon Monoxide poisoning he could only have been in his early thirties. Hope this helps, Howard

Geek time! The reason for more turns one way than the other is its a double acting hydraulic ram, which means its displacing the ram from the cylinder going up, this needs more oil to send it out, and produces more force to lift the bridge. Then coming down, the oil between the ram and the cylinder pushes the bridge back, down, and there's less volume, because of the ram taking up some of the volume so less oil to pump! Bet you're glad you asked now!!!😂😂 Made me even keener to revisit the Peak Forest this summer🤞🤞🤞

Hmmm, the cranker on that lift bridge is hydraulic, not geared or cabled, so there is no direct link between the upness and the number of crankings. Just like hydraulic paddle gear there is a bit of slip in the mechanism. Cranking up the weight of the bridge will make the mechanism slip more so more crankery is required. Winding down the weight of the bridge will help because in the direction of down gravity is your friend. So you need a smaller crank to go down on it. Or something.

About the winch; there is a way to construct a gear that will give you a different ratio depending on the way you turn the crank. It´s a bit difficult to explain without a drawing (and I can´t seem to find any), but a moveable cogwheel that changes position depending on the input force/direction will engage alternating larger/smaller cogwheels. This will change the ratio up and down "automatically". I´m not sure this is the case on the bridge winch, but seems like a logical explanation ;) Btw, -22C when I got to work this morning in Gjøvik in inland Norway by lake Mjøsa - all iced up now. No canal boats, but you´ll find Skibladner operating in the summer; the worlds oldest paddle steamboat in regular traffic - google it, it´s a beautiful ship :)

It takes 80 winds to lift as the pump is worn and some oil bypasses the rotary pump rollers. Lowering is lower pressure and any escaping oil helps speed up the operation.. So, there we are! Incidentally if you only wind very slowly all the oil escapes and it won't go up at all...

I really like the way these videos are put together especially with the drone footage that changes the perspective. Use of music and Dillon's editing make me glad I stumbled across your channel!!!!

Okay, I'm like 3.5 hours into your videos and what can I say other than wow. I can be in a real crappy mood, and then I watch your awesome videography, paired with your comforting and informative rhetoric, and I feel much better! I think it's so awesome that you guys decided to take this journey together and create such a wonderful life. Its just an added bonus that we get to share it with y'all.
