Really enjoyed this one, Stew. Brings back gardening memories! I think they were saying "elote maize" = sweetcorn? Pumpkin is a companion plant to corn - the Native Americans taught the Pilgrims how to plant them together, using a dead fish for fertilizer underneath the corn seed. Corn requires a LOT of nitrogen - good quality soil. Human hair or dried blood also keeps away varmints. We used to have Racoons come and get our ripe corn. They can smell EXACTLY when to come eat the cobs!! A bite here, a bite there...maddening! Loved the cenote and the somewhat dangerous Spanish Matador scene, although I was nervous someone was going to be gored by the bull!!
