Hey friends, welcome back. Last week we left Shelter Bay Marina and collected ourselves by resting after our first emotional passage, fixing some deck leaks, and provisioning at Linton Bay Marina before setting sail for the San Blas Islands. These islands are highly spoken of by many cruisers we’ve talked to, some of which arrived with the intentions of only staying a little while, and not leaving for 2, 3, or sometimes 5 years. The archipelagos location is about 70 miles northeast of Shelter Bay, and the 340 or more islands can be cruised year round without the threat of hurricanes. There is however an abundance of powerful rainy season storms from around June-December, and they can pack a lot of lightning which does hit sailboat masts and can destroy the mast itself, electronics, and potentially blow a hole in the hull, sinking your boat. Nonetheless, cruisers continue assuming this risk with the reward of living amongst these beautiful islands and people.
San Blas is home to the indigenous Kuna Indians, the G pronounced as a K, at around 55,000 in population. They have lived amongst these islands for hundreds of years and call their lands Guna Yala. The name San Blas being given by invading Spanish conquistadors in the 17th century, and therefore they are not fond of the name. The islands are protected by a barrier reef, that stops the swell from destroying the low lying islands. Each island can be inhabited by 1 or more families depending on the islands size. Their society is matrilineal, with the women controlling the household, money, and often choosing their own husbands. They live off their lands and the ocean, and have very limited technology powered by propane, basic solar power and battery storage. The men typically fish for food from dugout canoes with or without masts and sails, and sell some of their catch to make money. The women typically learn to sew Molas which are hand stitched through multiple layers of colored fabrics making beautiful traditional art and selling them to make money.
Usually cruisers stop here after sailing across the Atlantic Ocean, through the Caribbean, and then continue on towards the Panama Canal, to transit and begin their Pacific Ocean adventure. It just so happens that this beautiful place will be OUR shakedown cruising ground to learn how to sail our new boat, operate all of its systems, see what breaks, and hopefully have some fun while were at it. It’s late November, during the change of seasons and the rainy season storms should be calming down. We are carefully navigating our way into the first anchorage and although we are nervous about anchoring Boundless for the first time, it looks promising. Lets see how it goes!
Enjoy!

    The San Blas Islands have competition for most beautiful. Isla del Cocos and Nuka Hiva are beautiful as well. But San Blas offers a culture that is amazing. I have 3 pieces of art from a master mula artist. I was in San Blas during January 23 and will be back in March or April this year. There are approximately 380 islands and only about 45 are inhabited. One that we anchored near was only 350 paces around the entire island including some walking in the water because of beach obstructions. Another was inhabited by one person. They are truly magical. Enjoy the islands and join some dinners on the beaches where cruisers bring their catch of the day for a BBQ over palm fronds and coconut husks.

    i’m so impressed by boundless …so many reasons, but one very outstanding one is her very comfortable looking cockpit…especially for a 42 double ender …i love the wide helm seat with the higher additional seating behind…perfect perch while cruising along under auto pilot or wind vane…so much natural light and ventilation below, with gorgeous joinery work abound…very high quality yacht all the way around…cheers!

    Well said! We agree and are so in love with her ❤️ That's so funny we actually nicknamed the upper seating behind the wheel "the perch"! It's one of our favorite spots to sit while underway. For being 42' with a "small cockpit" we fell as though we have more useable living space than the large cockpit on Seawind, and the small cockpit really gives way to a very spacious and large interior. Cheers to you thank you for commenting 😊

    @@SailingSeawind Yeah, Plukky spent a long time in that area and has very many videos on those islands, which includes the time he was struck by lightening in the middle of the night. It blew two holes into the bottom of his boat and he had to get under water to patch up the holes to stop the boat sinking, but was also investigated by a shark in the end. Such a frightening situation. Gotta say though, he is a real fish and spends a lot of time under water with some great spear fishing footage. Not to mention his caveman like entertainment. The guy is a real Aussie clown. Very capable and believe it or not, a very smart engineer by profession. He just acts like a Neanderthal.

    We didn't know what to think at first. I've read mixed reviews on the Mantus M2 but so far I don't think we have drug in any anchorage. We had a Rocna with a roll bar on Seawind and we loved it. Apparently the M2 can have trouble resetting with a big wind shift. We have had a couple 180 degree shifts with fairly strong winds and haven't had any issues. We always try for 5:1 scope with our 3/8" all chain rode.

    Good question! It was me (Parker) who had the dream. I don't come from a sailing family and I knew nothing about sailboats up until I bought a small 20' sailboat in 2014, fixed it up and sailed it for a couple years on a small lake. I decided I wanted to find a boat I could travel in after finding the early KZread channels (Delos, La Vagabonde etc) and realizing that its possible to see the world by boat. I found Seawind in 2016 and taught myself to fiberglass, and fixed the boat up slowly over about 6 years. 3 years into the refit I met Katy who hadn't ever sailed before. She fell in love with it that next summer, and we decided that we would chase the dream together!

    very nice video, was curious about the approx cost of the stitched artwork? Is the cost of living high for islanders and cruisers? I assume things like fuel are very expensive. The islanders seem nice, are they truly nice or more looking to make money from cruisers?

  • @SailingSeawind

    @SailingSeawind

    4 ай бұрын

    A bit of both from what we could tell. The molas were fairly expensive, we paid 100 for both but we had no comparison to make. We are happy to have supported the Gunas and from our experience they are as nice as they seem in the videos. Fuel is very expensive I'm sure, although we didn't buy any while there. I think they live off the land as much as possible and am not sure of their cost of living. It seems as though they do make their livings in large part from the tourism of the cruising boats passing through

    Do you at some point contemplate renaming your channel to Sailing Bounder?

    We’ve been thinking about it but haven’t made a decision yet. We loved the name Boundless and are glad we kept it 😄 feels appropriate because it’s “our Boundless adventures” as Sailing Seawind. It’s a tough call!

    A male who knows how to articulate his feelings eloquently and freely share interesting thoughts of his experiences is no boy…that is one hell of an intelligent man. Since you felt compelled to leave an immature negative remark, you may want to consider examining your own emotional intelligence, awareness, and character…or not. 🤦🏽‍♀️
