Katie, Musicians don't age like other people. I'm a Clarinetist, I'm 78 and I feel 14...not:) I think having played for so many years have given me an excellent breathing system and has kept me active mentally. You are just starting your life adventures as a musician, and you will keep learning your entire life. Perfection is subjective, so as long as you love what you do and enjoy sharing with others, I think your musical growth will occur naturally. Stay well, strive for happiness. Cheers, Rik Spector

I think you're an amazing ambassador for the flute. If I had had you as a role model when I was young, I would definitely have been inspired and more motivated. I only played the flute for two, very mediocre years but I regret that now. (Although part of that decision was moving from one state with an amazing school band director to another system that didn't make sense to me. Along with going from a house to an apartment.) But I still am not very musically inclined. Anyhow, keep up the great work you do. I know there are things you want to accomplish and I truly hope they happen, but these videos of yours could truly be a lasting legacy and inspire so many others. On another note, 28 seems very young to me, so definitely don't stress about your age. It is just a number.

My university's flute studio (that I'm a part of) is doing a virtual flute choir in light of a lot of schools doing remote classes now due to the COVID-19. We have around 50 people that reached out, so right now we have our flute studio leading Zoom sectionals for a Nicole Chamberlain piece and we will all eventually record ourselves individually and the videos will all be edited together. It's really great to get people playing again in large groups, especially since most ensembles are halted for the rest of the semester.

28/29 is so young Katie, youre a young adult, very few people have it together at your age or 30.......or any age really. I get you about the age pressure when it comes to instruments though. I play violin, piano and only recently picked up cello. But when people see me, they expect me to be some kind of child prodigy, and I feel this weird pressure that I have to wow people with my skills you know. I can "wow" people on the piano, but whenever someone asks me how long I've been playing violin or cello...i know they expect or want to hear "oh since I was 5 years old!", I feel somewhat embarrassed being an adult beginner.

I see a Lot of myself in you and a Lot of your responses about your life and flute playing... like a Lot! It's crazy! Except the sax thing... I'm a pretty good actor sax player and played it in jazz band from Jr high through college since nine of the bands ever wanted a flutist. I've also been playing piano since I was 2 and started singing when I was about 8 or 9. My mom was a singer but it wasn't always my fav thing since I didn't want to be labeled as "Oh! You're Sharon's daughter" Funny enough, it still happened until I was in high school and competing in local/region/area and state auditions. People finally started to do it to my mom when they met her... "Oh! You're Shelly's mother" Lol Oh and yes, I'm still a very active musician... 35 years and still going!

Katniss Everdeen I recently started playing saxophone after playing flute for two years and I agree that the reeded instruments are easier.

It’s because all you are doing is blowing into the thing lucky for you u don’t play a brass instrument where you have to buzz and tongue and blow at the same time

Brass isn’t that hard to play, breathing wise. Suck it up and be happy that they had an easy time learning a new instrument, instead of rather trying to brag that your instrument is harder. Leave them be.

Some of these comments were quite mean. I mean people what do you get from being nasty. Katie is entertaining us and sharing her knowledge. What do you get from being so judgemental? I honestly cringed at some of the comments and they were not aimed at me. *sigh* Thank you for what you do Katie.
