Reading the Land

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In order to even know what and how to change your land and what you want to accomplish, you need to be able to define how you want your land to be and where your land is at right now. In Holistic Management we look at four ecosystem processes and learn how to influence them through the tools we have.

Simeon, wow there is so much to know about taking care of your land with holistic management. I think sometimes we take it for granted and not keep our land thriving. Thank you for a great video.

Cheers muchly. That was interesting regarding the ground. It reminded me of an area that we used to picnic on years ago that was heavily grazed by rabbits. But the wild flowers were abundant and the butterflies and other insects were numerous. Not so now, it was taken over by a woodland charity - don't know what happened to the rabbits, but the grass grew up, tussocked and the wild flowers and including the abundant variety of insects had virtually all gone, just a few harebells struggling to get to the light. I felt sad, because it appeared to be just waste land and had lost so much as a result. I guess they didn't understand the ecosystem and ruined it. Or am I misinterpreting?

Which school? I have never seen this content taught like this in a public school or farming school. If it was, our agriculture would look very different.

Our local extension service will teach to assist these ideas. There are also grants. However, big farmers are not as interested.

Do you have any steep land on your new homestead? I would love a guide on how to seed pasture grass on steep land. There’s nothing really out there explaining how to seed grass seed on steep land… half of my property is rolling and pretty steep rolling land. So no tractor on those parts. I know it’ll be an uphill battle but I’m dead set on making my property work for small ruminants and growing forage for them

@@simeonandalex thanks, yes, I’ve put out some hay on my land (with seeds inside the hay presumably) but in order to get the grass established I would need to put out a lot of seed or more seed than what’s in the hay. I guess I’ll try broadcasting again and putting the hay on top of the broadcasted seed.
