Cole Wehrle really designed a wonderfully intricate game once again! Yes, it is a bit complex, but if you can push through, I believe you will experience a beautifully crafted world with an emerging story, and great social dynamics.

Subscribed to this channel because of this video. Love to see others who love Oath as much as I do. I’ve only had two play throughs. As with all games, first time is slow. Even made a few mistakes. Watched a handful of “how to play” videos and memorized the rules book front to back. 2nd game was much better. Regardless, it’s been a joy to play as my friends and I build this multi-generational history together. Perhaps this is overly simplified but it seems like many board games reviewers struggled to lean into the roleplaying/story building that really makes this game so special. Strictly playing Oath a couple of times for the mechanics-only will leave a bad taste in your mouth. Oath demands an openness to the narration. Many board game reviewers don’t seem to have the availability that this game asks. When you really get comfortable with Oath, you find some amazing mechanisms that reflect strong possibilities in story building. To me, Oath is a work of art. It reminds me of “Microscope” from Ben Robbins. I do wish the rules were a bit more straight forward via the rules books but regardless, I have the highest regards for Cole who did something very unique and daring. I wish others saw it in the same way but even if they don’t, I’ll continue to enjoy it for years to come. Thanks for this video!

So glad you can enjoy the game as much as we do! It truly is special and a great role playing experience. I feel like playing other tabletop RPGs really helped us get into it.

Great video and just had to comment, at 21:25 in the video you guys speak of roleplaying the game and thats exactly what me and my friends do. The on thing i decided(as the games owner) was that the names of the characters had have to use the color as somewhere in the name. Love Oath!

Oath is my favorite board game, so I am biased but I concur with your point about - you don’t always play to win. If you’ve ever played munchkins or any rpg, you know it can be way more fun to help someone or screw one over in an epic betrayal or an intelligent move. Oath with its non linear path and player options allows this for intelligent/strategic players to truly shine. Also quick add- you can play this competitively or more role play fun style which is great.

I've only played one game of oath and we had the alpha gamer dynamic as a group. IE just to made sure we grasped things correctly as there is quite a bit of mechanical complexity to get through on a 1st game. What this created was players working out the diplomatic / king making puzzle this game offered aloud and together. As if we were trying to see the best way to not make the game end. It didn't come from a single player, but I suspect a game where players understand the puzzle & mechanics won't want to take that extra hour just to discuss the unsolvability of the board + that extra hour to work out the rules. We're not even unfamiliar with the dynamic as the group played Twilight imperium a decent amount before and our final turn dynamic often ressembles the feel of this game : How do we collectively slap the player on top ? I didn't mind it for the first game, but I can see the game being way more enjoyable if you willingly try to avoid bogging it down in that manner. I rarely have this opinion on a game, but I think it's best enjoyed if you play it a specific way. If you play to squeeze every little advantage you can find to try to win, I don't see how you can ignore trying to entice cooperation out of other players. That's kinda the nature of the game and that's perfectly fine. Which is why I don't think it makes for a game you want to play competitively or try to win too deeply. But most board games not being framed that way, I definitely see how you'd fall into playing it in that very slow drawn out way on first time.

After more than a dozen games I feel I have to agree to the 4 star reviews. Quite few Pax and COIN games do things I like in confrontational games better than Oath, unfortunately. The premise was great though, still I sold it, rebought it and sold it again.

It boggles my mind that someone could take 2 hours to play a single round. Like...did every single player ignore everyone elses turn such that they didn't learn any rules?

I've haven't seen others mention this, but I think the end game dice roles are important for the chancellor-citizen dynamic. When playing as a citizen you will often be able to plan a dramatic single turn which will put you in a position to take a successor win. Since the chancellor comes first in the turn order, when a citizen makes these moves the chancellor will not have a chance to retaliate until the next round. If there was a hard turn count, a citizen in such a position risks nothing in waiting until the very last turn to execute their strategy, which is counter to the risk v. reward ethos of the rest of the game and places the chancellor at a significant disadvantage in such a match. With the probabilistic ending, the citizen has to decided between giving the chancellor a chance to win and making their move too early opening themselves up to retaliation from the chancellor.

Congratulations on being the first person to ask! :p We took an unexpected break after Nathan and I (Alex) were trying to get our video game published. That break turned into over a year long, and our life situations look quite a bit different. It’s possible we will get a schedule of content going again, but there is no timeline or certainty at this point. We love this community either way! Thanks for watching.

Jeremy Stegmaier giving this a 4 is ludicrous.. specially considering he didn't explain himself. If I didn't know him better, I'd say it's jealousy over the "Secret" economy. An idea far beyond anything he has ever made.

Yeah we saw that review. Jeremy’s design philosophy is very narrow in a lot of ways to us. He makes some fun, clean gaming experiences, but seems very picky about what he likes. which isn’t necessarily a fault I guess 😛
