    You've hit the nail on the head regarding the comma splices, it's definitely because of the original text and a translation choice. As a native speaker of both English and Swedish, the use of commas is one of the things that fascinate and frustrate me most about the differences between my languages. I'm not a linguist or an expert in any way, so take my rambling with a grain of salt though! Comma splices (satsradningar) are a lot more acceptable in Swedish than they are in English. The comma is 'stronger' in Swedish, which means that it's used quite differently and, relevantly, allows for a broader usage of comma splicing. In Swedish, comma splices where the clauses are directly related are not only permissable but sometimes preferable. In this case the comma acts like a semi-colon would in English. I've seen maybe five semi-colons in all Swedish language novels I've ever read, and I've read a lot. I haven't read The Winners yet in either language, but I have read other Backman and know he likes a good satsradning. I've also read portions of the English translation of Beartown and remember the use of semi-colons really standing out to me. If the comma splices are mostly of this related-clauses nature that's probably why. The 'stronger' comma means that it's also omitted in a lot of places where it would almost certainly be used in English. A huge part of translating English to Swedish and vice versa is figuring out where to add/remove/replace commas, and as someone whose first drafts are a mix of Swedish and English I've gotten so much feedback from teachers in Sweden that I use commas too freely, 'like a madman'. On the other hand, I'm prone to comma splicing in English and growing up in the UK I was told off by teachers for that. So I have a lot of sympathy for the translator, who either made the choice to preserve this difference in language or just wasn't as effective at translating punctuation this time around.

  • @newlynova

    @newlynova

    this is really fascinating, thank you for sharing - i think you are right!! there were many more semicolons in the first book, so i feel the decision was just made to do commas instead in the winners in similar places. translation is incredibly challenging and i do not envy people who have to make those decisions...very hard to consider what is most faithful to the original text

    I find your thoughts on The Winners really interesting ! I must admit, Backman is my absolute favorite contemporary author and I do tend to love anything he writes regardless of the pacing, so a 700 hundred pages novel about whatever happening in Beartown was everything I hoped for. The first book is wonderful, complete and cohesive, that’s for sure. However, if some plot points were not so interesting for me in book 2 ans 3, I felt like they gave us a more complete scenery. Like, hockey is at the core of the city, so hockey IS politics, school, people. And the latter books hit me so hard because the solidarity, the stories, ends up forming such a large ensemble. I had the time of my life seeing those characters evolving and some, including Amat and the Anderssons, were handled so well with their journeys that I can’t blame Backman for rambling about politics and gangs for a bit too long. But I do agree that they heavily rely on the emotional impact and character portrayals that happened in book one ! I would still say that the longer it felt, the more I imagined how dreadful it was for those inhabitants.

    I have just recently found Lexi and she has quickly became one of my favourite booktubers ever. I just love her approach when talking, this eloquently, about books. She seems so genuine and unbothered by other peoples' opinions, it's inspiring. It's like she says what my brain is thinking, most of the time, phrasing it in such an unique and funny way. I have freshly, and finaly, been diagnose with ADHD and now I understand why my neurodivergent brain has shitty attention span. Most times I have to put youtube videos, at least, at 1.75x speed for my thoughts to keep up with the videos' words. But with Lexi, I just love how fast-passed she talks, I just listen to her normally and it appeases my brain. This part is a bit more personal and I don't want to seem weird, in any way, but I have strugled with my mental health for a long time and having someone talking about their own experience, in such an organic way, is so healing.
