I will say, for the first story, a huge part of what got me into knitting was the loud clicking of the needles... it's a satisfying sound to me. So in that first story, the op asking the knitter to stop makes total sense to me. I may like it but I'm acutely aware of how loud and distracting the sound might be in a live performance setting.

I’m a knitter as well and I get it too. Sometimes I’ll switch to plastic or wood tips if I know the sound of metal clicking is annoying to someone I know, and will be around. Or I’ll bring a quieter project to be accommodating. People just need to be polite when asking for accommodations, because it’s not inherently rude to knit or crochet in public

Absolutely. I have hyperacusis and this would distract the hell out of me too. I love knitting and crocheting as a focus tool when I'm listening, but not respecting your surroundings is just rude. That being said, we only got one side of the story so there's that I guess.

@@diughbigblacI disagree. Some people struggle with small noises like that and it can definitely distract them from a performance. I doubt they were intentionally upsetting themselves, as someone who struggles similarly, it is 95% out of my control but I am trying to lessen the issue through mindfulness. The person was very respectful when asking, the woman knitting took it very personally, which I also can understand I guess. Thoughts on knitting in a relationship: my husband and I are married for 2 years, but have been together for 8 years. I picked up knitting as a hobby about a year ago and he is super supportive of it. He always said I needed a hobby, and he always wants to take me yarn shopping now. I realize that I do spend a lot of time knitting, and I’m the one that feels guilty that I may not be showing enough attention to him. I sometimes ask him “are you mad that I’m knitting right now? Do you want me to stop while we watch tv?” And he’s always like “No! Do you whatever you want. If it makes you happy, go right ahead!”

I was a dressmaker for many years, & I wouldn't even have sewn a wedding dress for a friend! People don't understand how complex wedding dresses & all their accessories are. A crocheted dress would probably also need a slip, & the fitting & tension of the design would be so hard to achieve without a pattern. The offer of a shawl is such a much better item, because there are no fit issues, & it could be accomplished in the time available. I agree with you that some details of the story seem to be missing, but I don't think that anyone should expect a friend to make them a wedding dress.

42:46 when she said it was short notice she definitely meant that it wasn’t a lot of time for people to prepare. I don’t know what month this was, but generally people plan wedding for at least a year in advance. If it’s January and they’re getting married in April then that doesn’t leave friends and family much time to get off work, buy gifts, get flights if they live far away, etc. She also says that “even a skilled crocheter” would need at least 2 months for this project. To me that says the wedding less than 2 months away, but could be 3 or 4 away and she’s estimating that it would take her quite a bit longer than 2 months. In addition, all of her other friends gifts were free. I think the story implies that the friend said she wanted her gift to be her wedding dress. If payment was offered, I assume the OP would have said so. But even if the friend offered payment, I think the issue here is that OP clearly doesn’t have enough time to complete the project. The friend is TA because she’s is expecting a n extravagant project worth thousands of dollars for free, and is unwilling to accept any compromise. She accuses OP of playing favorites for giving all her other friends gloves and scrunchies, when clearly she is entitled and wanting a gift worth hundreds of times what the others were, would take months instead of hours or days, and is like a hundred times the size. This is very cut and dry to me. OP is NTA.

I wouldn't say anything since I don't want to be rude by asking them to put it away since I'll crochet in public so I'll put on my headphones if someone knits with metal needles 😁 Also my bf loves that I crotchet since he likes to assist by undoing knots and pulling out yarn for me.

I would definitely get annoyed if someone next to me was knitting while we were at an event. I cant tune out incessant constant noises like that. In my apartment when the AC is on it will slightly vibrate the walls and will cause a little buzz sound where picture frames touch the wall or where the door meets the doorframe. It bothers me so much. My husband doesnt even notice it but when I hear it i cant get it out of my head until i find where its coming from an adjust whatever is causing the buzz sound to make it stop. I crochet so i understand that people want to bring projects with them places but i probably couldnt stand sitting next to a lady knitting with that light clacking sound of the knitting when im trying to focus on something else. I definitely think the knitting lady overreacted. If that were me id feel awkward and say sorry but id either stop or move seats if i really wanted to do it so badly.

For the first AITA, I think it greatly depends on the type of show. Clearly this Folk music "event" is similar to attending a symphony. I attend these regularly and ANY noise at all can be heard through the music, no matter how quiet that noise is. Knitting needles would definitely be rude and ruin the music everyone else. At events like this, it is inappropriate. At events that are louder and less formal, such as movies as mentioned or other genres of music, go for it! Each type of event is different and I think we need to understand this point a little more.

As for the one about her crocheting while watching tv and him wanting to cuddle I think both could compromise. Like when me and my husband watch tv/movie together at home we normally start out cuddling and then if we’re watching multiple episodes or a movie I’ll then crochet… after we’ve cuddled. Relationships are about compromise and showing love to the other person, it’s not about me me me. It’s about us and they both should be thinking of the other person and trying to make them happy.

On the trains in the UK, unless you have assigned seats, you risk losing a seat if there's not another one free. You could end up standing for hours on a train ride. For certain portions of the journey, especially during peak times, it's not uncommon to have more passengers than seats. By leaving, she would have to risk standing for at least part of her journey.

I’m highly sensitive and in the process of getting tested for autism/adhd and repetitive sounds are the bane of my existence no matter HOW soft or inaudible they are. Eventually the soft sounds (and along with the hand movements) creep their way into my brain and start festering up until the point that my entire body starts to ache and I even get aggressive. People telling me that I should “just find another seat” at a concert so I’m not bothered by someone who WILLINGLY disrupts a silent concert with a knitting project are ableist and selfish AF and should go kick rocks. I paid for my ticket too and I am entitled to a fun experience as well, so if I’m at such a concert and I’m bothered by your knitting, you can bet your sweet bippy I’m going to say something about it.

I don't think it's unreasonable to understand how someone fidgeting may be distracting. I know my attention can get disrupted with things like that. OP could've moved themselves, or the knitter could've easily scooted over a seat. No idea what was going on with them at the time to be so upset about it, but that's not a huge ask. As for the relationship one, oh boy. Looking at OP's replies, he only seemed to focus on ones that leaned in his favor, which just tells me this relationship isn't going to last. Confronting difficulties, not just compromising, is part of relationships too. It sounds like he wasn't really communicating properly with her. And lord, 30 years old??? I for sure tuned that out and was 100% expecting teens for what he was describing. There are definitely middle grounds to find there, but you have to actually be open to finding them. The top came out great too btw! x'D And thanks for reading replies as well. It always bothers me to watch Reddit videos that don't include some replies! haha

For the first story the knitting lady acted unreasonably from what we know. OP paid to be at the concert just like the lady knitting, but when you bring your projects out in public you have to aware of the other people around you. I think it's reasonable to suggest the lady knitting moves but OP could have also tried to move away. I would be upset if I paid money for an experience and couldn't enjoy it because of somebody else making noise especially when there was room for her to move away and be less distracting. This could've easily been solved where both parties could continue to enjoy the show in their own ways without distracting one another.

The story about the guy getting jealous of his girlfriend’s crochet is funny to me because my boyfriend and I are the same ages as them (we’ve been together for about 7 months) and I crochet while we watch TV together too. We’ve been watching his favorite series (he’s seen it 4 times, I never have) and just last week as he was setting it up, before he pressed play he turned to me and asked “do you have something to crochet? Do you want to grab it first?” We cuddle while I crochet. I also choose not to crochet sometimes to give him my full attention. While he plays video games, I crochet and we’ll take breaks and talk about his game or my project. On long drives, I crochet if he’s driving. Sometimes I won’t so I can hold his hand instead. It is possible to humor each other with your respective hobbies and spend quality time together simultaneously, but sometimes it should be set aside to have one on one time. The guy is weird but also not COMPLETELY wrong (but def like 99% wrong and still definitely the asshole)
