I didn't realize either. I just have my books and wing it as the players won't follow the notes anyways.

@@NicholasMage013 listen, everyone has a way of running their own games, and if you're that good at improv, then be my guest and just wing the whole thing. But I personally just like to set up what would happen if the players don't interfere, and then lay down 5 adventure hooks, for main quests or side quests, to allow the players to act. And then I have a basic idea of what might happen if they follow those hooks, but at that point it's mainly improv, and moving around shit behind the screen. Though I'm still a fairly new DM.

The first game I DM’d was completely unscripted since I’d never read the books, our old DM was sick and they volunteered me and I was thrust in. My game involved an elven ranger and a half-orc fighter saving a cheese makers daughter. Oh, and there was something involving a talking raptor and a golden statue of Mr. Sanders from KFC. It was weird.

My notes tend to dilute in quality as the session goes on. Opening with detailed paragraphs of room descriptions and such. By the end it's just "This dude is here. He will fight the heroes."

I literally work in reverse to that. I start trying to keep things simple and later ended up writing an 18 page backstory for a villain they never ended up meeting.

*flashbacks to the “novel” I wrote when I was 13* This is such quality content, I love it.

Doing an updated version of sharing your notes would be really awesome gauging how much to prep. Talking about it is alright, but actually seeing what different size campaigns looks like lvl 1-5, 1-11, 1-20

Yeah I'm familiar with the whole 'whole leave space for actual like names because you don't wanna disrupt your train of thought. However I've learned to put brackets around those placeholder stuff like "the party must venture to [TOWN NAME] and retrieve [MAGIC ITEM]" so that when I (ideally) come back to it I can k ow what I was talking about.

My husband has an idea for a child NPC reminiscent of Kevin the Vampire. This kid is named Trevor, and he's an all powerful Wizard. But he talks with a bad lisp, and his voice cracks from puberty. I don't think I can accurately describe it any better through text.

I actually really love the idea of an NPC having a cannon that will “take the party to where they need to be” but then it just shoots them ten feet forward
