At some point I will again, but like I said in my first ever comic book video, there are times that world events and life in general force me to put comics on the back burner for a time so that I can take care of what needs to be taken care of. Here is the statement, I say it in the first minute of the video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mmGej6SLecLTn84.htmlsi=c6pQEYaJrAXQtH1j By the way, I'm still reading comic books on a daily basis, and will be doing a few comic book reading live streams in the next month or two :)

I have a healthy skepticism when it comes to these event comics but this issue is excellent! Two of my favorite sentences: "So every moment must be spent in the glorious pursuit of knowledge" (17:50 - Ha!) "Stagnation is not a state easily maintained" (31:00 - It's a good question whether that last statement is correct.) Thanos is a master manipulator because he must know that being insensitive in a family crisis -- whose outcome you don't know in your moment of carelessness -- can hardly be compared to how Thanos willingly engaged in murder many times over. Norrin's despair when he learns of his father's suicide and Thanos' constant gloating say it all.

Dear Chyco, i do recommend two amazing comicbooks from the bottom of my heart to you. The first one is, *MoonShadow* beautifully illustrated by the artist Jon J. Muth. The second one is, *Marada the She-Wolf* , a fictional fantasy comic book by writer Chris Claremont and English artist John Bolton.

Oh wow, Moonshadow, I bought that comic back in the 80's and that was the last time I read it. It was beautiful and if I find it again in my collection I will definitely give it another read. Epic Comics put out some amazing books and at some point I plan on collecting all of them, I'll add Marada to the list as well :)

I just watched this video for the second time and for me Silver Surfer #50 is one of the strongest comics Chycho has read so far! It's obvious that it is a carefully constructed comic: I love the scene beginning at 24:35 where Shalla Bal is rightfully enthusiastic about the wonders of post-scarcity Zenn-La and Norrin retorts with a terse "Zenn-La coddles its children from womb to tomb" which is comically precocious but understandable because of his father's overbearing influence. The next panels are masterful when Jartran Radd appears and father and son are completing each other's sentences. Jartran places his hand on Norrin's shoulder and they come to the foreground whereas the scene ends with Shalla Bal's tiny figure in the background to show that she will probably always come third after Norrin's father and science. I haven't made my mind up about Jartran...On the one hand his discipline and dedication are admirable and probably mandatory to achieve great things but on the other hand he's showing the extreme tunnel vision that may come with being an overachiever -- seeing doom and gloom in the paradise that is Zenn-La. Another great panel comes at 29:00 when Jartran and Norrin look down on Zenn-La's happy streetlife and Jartran says "You must not grow up to be like them" (which for better and for worse will be the case as we see later). It's funny that Jartran winds up developing the "psi-sonic transmitter" for Zenn-La's "loathsome" entertainment industry and tragic that this "minor" invention then leads to his suicide...Thanks for this reading, Chycho :-)

My pleasure, brother, and I agree, for me, the story arc that spans Silver Surfer #50 and Thanos Quest is one of the great achievements in comics from the 1990's. Masterfully told and beautifully drawn. The way I see it Silver Surfer #50 is really the first part of Thanos Quest and a must read, which is why I made this video :)

  • @FrF

I will definitely seek out Thanos' Quest! In the meantime I've read the 6-issue "Infinity Gauntlet". It's very nice to see Jim Starlin's cosmic comics concepts (smile) turn up in a big event series and there are even subversive elements when it's not exactly clear whether Starlin lets his characters comment about the polytheistic Marvel Universe or our world. There's a scene towards the end of the series which I earmarked enthusiastically because it made me smile (SPOILER ALERT for those of you who don't know IG): Adam Warlock has finally acquired the Infinity Gauntlet and the following dialogue takes place. Dr. Strange: "That power corrupts is a truism that cannot be ignored." AW: "You fear a cosmic despot? Surely you must realize that even before Thanos you lived under such tyranny." Thor: "But it was a benign reign. Random and unfocused." AW: "And now that it is calculating you find this unsettling? Afraid replacing your usual chaos with order might prove unpalatable?" Cut to Dr. Strange and Thor who remain silent in astonishment. One thing I noticed, however, is that the art of the main Infinity Gauntlet series seems to be for the most part rushed. These big crossovers tend to break the will of even experienced professionals. I remember that J. G. Jones gave up Final Crisis after only two issues. George Perez had to shoulder an insane workload in addition to IG and it understandably shows in #1-4. (#5 & 6 were drawn, I assume on short notice, by Ron Lim.)

100% agree regarding big events. They tend to start out well enough but when they start to cross-over to multiple titles, most tend to lose out on quality. From what I remember, Infinity Gauntlet didn't suffer too much but I should pay it a visit again at some point. On that note, the only mega cross-over that in my opinion stayed true to itself and the universe was Unity by Valiant. In my opinion that was the greatest mega cross-over in comic book history, from the ones I've read anyway, and the Valiant relaunch has done an amazing job with the cross-overs that they have created so far, especially Armor Hunters, Harbinger Wars, and the smaller events such as Book of Death and The Valiant. And a great find about the dialogue with Adam Warlock. I never read the follow up cross-overs such as Warlock and the Infinity Watch so I don't know what came of this arc, fingers crossed they cover it in the movies :)

Are you ever interested in doing a comic video on just the history of publicers, characters or storylines? I bring this up because you always do a little of this pre-reading a comic anyway. Would love it, if you would a longer version of this on your favourite comics, characters and publicers. Or just the history of comics in general. Thanks for all the comic content you made and will make in the future, they are so great : ) Groetjes Jen.

Thanks Jen, both for the love and the recommendations. I do plan on doing some videos on comic book history, I actually already have two planned, just need to find the time to do some additional research and the shoot. The historical significance of comic books is definitely one of the main attractions for me, as you can tell from some of the intros I do per reading. Maybe it's time for me to move the priority of these videos up the queue :)
