Thank you so much Kelly for this reaction. This song comes from their latest 2017 album "The Forest Seasons", which is almost Jari Mäenpää's solo project as he not only composed, arranged, recorded & produced the album, but also played all the instruments. He got help from the other band members plus many others just for additional vocals & choirs. Jari wrote this song to deal with the death of his father. Given that he has only one fully functioning lung as he lost 25% of his other lung to tuberculosis, he is a powerful vocalist also.

One of my favorite songs, one of the best songs i ever heard. Jari's a genius, like Tuomas. Amazing musician to. In the first albums Jari recorded everything except the drums. Kay from Nightwish was Wintersuns drumer when this was recorded. The fact that Jari's the wrighter and the singer, helps to pass the emotion.

Yeah i guess its important to know..that Kai became Nightwish drummer after he played with Jari..maybe not because..but sometimes miss the fact that kai was in Wintersun before he went to Nightwish..just because Jari puts so much work in his Music..that its takes alot of time until the next album :D

As Joulu said, it is almost too emotional. I totally felt it too. It was the lyrics, delivery, and emotion. Every detail was so well done. I had no clue when I first started this journey that metal music was so complex. I only viewed it as loud, difficult to decifer, etc LOL LOL. I suppose it depends on which genre we choose to listen to. As far as the growly parts, I am not a fan per say, BUT..... for the first time in my middle aged life, I have come to realize why artists add them. It's a diverse distraction that acts like a bridge in music. It seems to involve emotion or a statement. It's more complex than I originally thought. Although, I'm not a fan of growly, I will tolerate it now if it is well-placed and helps tell the story.

Fantastic song, and a great reaction. I’ve drifted quite a long way from music featuring harsh vocals these days, but there are still a small number of bands I still love who use this style. Wintersun are one of them, as the musicianship is stunning, and I love the clean vocals too.Another is Amorphis, also from Finland, who also use contrasting clean/harsh vocals and feature phenomenal melodies. You might like a few of their songs too, and I’d say a good starting point would be Amongst Stars from their latest album. Thanks again for this wonderful reaction to a song I’m extremely fond of.

Hi Andy, as I told Ville, while I'm not generally a fan of growly or distorted harsh vocal sounds, I have come to understand the reason why some groups choose to incorporate. I feel as long as the musical composition is intelligent, complex, and well executed, the harsh vocals need to be placed properly, it can help tell the story. The style as you say, works well with the musicality of talented people.

  • @randywhite1724

Kelly, I’m glad you reacted to the lyric version so you could have some context to the music. This is a very deep song and many reactors have hated on it because of the harsh growls. Taken in context they make sense. Winter is the season of change! The old and the weak die off and those remaining must grieve but know that rebirth via spring is coming.

  • @KellyDeaconKDzJOY

Randy, I love your analysis and analogy here. As I mentioned above, while I may not generally be a fan of the growls etc., I am not going to dismiss them IF they are woven into beautifully composed music, and IF they are placed well, lending to the story. In my opinion, your analogy of winter dying off, those remaining grieve, but have great hope in renewal actually sounds like physical death crossing into a spiritual eternity.

Thanks for this...keep up the good work!

Hi, thanks for this Wintersun, you have found next awesome Finnish metal band. :-) And I see many my fellow countrymen have already wrote here lot of info..., but, anyway, I will still put my spoon to this soup. :-) Wintersun has been around several years and has made so far 3 albums (2004, 2012, 2017). It is in same class with Nightwish in that sense, both don´t know how to do a bad song... Jari Mäenpää is founder and composer. All albums are what he hears inside his head... Like Tuomas. This song was from latest album, last song. It contains only 4 songs, Four Forest Seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Autumn has really dark feeling, melancholic. It describes same time Autumn in Finland (dark season) but also Jari´s father was seriously sick - and later died. Jari put those his emotions, dark feelings to that song. After that comes Winter (Loneliness) and his father is already dead and he is missing him. ("There was so much I wanted to say...") From this Loneliness, Jari made also so called acoustic version, It is even more beautiful than this and more touching. When this album came out 2017, I think in August I listen some song from it everyday... At first my favorite was Summer, but then later this Winter. Only thing is, this is so sad and i cannot listen it if my own mood is down. Too heart braking... Jari is really good singer, like you already noticed. And also really good guitarist. Here is one song , it should come to fourth album, if he ever managed to do it (Time II and second album was Time I, so we have waited that fourth album some time...). Way of The Fire kzread.info/dash/bejne/lXubzs2vcZW1cso.html This is taken from audience, so sound quality is not best possible, but quite good. Jari is doing two guitar solo and the second one is that "special". Person who has taken this video use zoom to his hands then. And ... Well you see then why :-) Jari is not anymore playing guitar in concerts, too heavy. Playing guitar and singing, cos his lungs. (look that other comment below from Tarmo Tyyri). But i am so sorry that we cannot enjoy his guitar anymore... And this song, Way of the Fire shows what he could do with guitar! From second album, there is 3 songs, live rehearsal in Sonic Pump Studios. They all are good point to start. You will see how they play and also sound quality is really good. Sons Of Winter And Stars (TIME I Live Rehearsals At Sonic Pump Studios) REMASTER Time (TIME I Live Rehearsals At Sonic Pump Studios) REMASTER Land Of Snow And Sorrow (TIME I Live Rehearsals At Sonic Pump Studios) REMASTER In those you will see also Kai Hahto playing drums. And if you start from Sons of Winter and Stars, you will see Kai in really hard work! :D Much harder than he play in Nightwish. Sometimes, I was hoping that Jukka N. would come back to Nightwish and then Kai goes back to Wintersun. Would have been correct drummer in each band. But in life, things don´t always go as you wish... For me Jari Mäenpää and Tuomas Nevalainen, theu go to class COMPOSER. And then we a lot of other really great and amazing song makers... But those two goes to top. Music + lyrics, they really can make those. Both are really talented musicians.

Oh and forget. You see that photo, in this video. Well Jari is living in Helsinki, like me also. And I know he found those all 4 places from Helsinki area, when he was walking or jogging. Many times I am wandering from where he actually took those photo´s... And from this, I can see there is sea, islands, trees ("forest"). And in West Helsinki is not this type, but from East Helsinki could find... hmmm... Would like to visit those places :-) .

I find it interesting to see you dive into progressively heavier bands. Maybe someday you will come back full circle to your first metal video and approach death metal with a new understanding. As a next step into that progression i would recommend Jinjer "teacher teacher". I expect this will be your first time hearing 'blast beats', it will be a fun reaction. The lyrics of the song are also quite interesting. Jinjer has some songs which i think would be too heavy or too experimental for you right now, but "teacher teacher" i think strikes just the right balance. If you want something to test the waters first you can start with Jinjer "Pisces". Pisces is Jinjers most popular song, also one of their "lightest", so it makes a good introduction.
