The stringed instrument where they pluck the strings is a koto, the guitar like instrument is a shamisen, the flute type instrument is shakuhachi, and the traditional drumset in the back is wadaiko. You should watch Kishikaisei next, this was their performace for the closing of the 2016 Olympics.

Wagakki Band is very cool - I recommend them to people who are looking for something a bit different. The guitar-like instrument you mentioned is called a shamisen; it is a traditional three-string Japanese lute played with a large pick called a bachi. Just so you know, "Sakura" (pronounced SA-ku-ra, with the accent on the first syllable) is sometimes used as a girl's name in Japan, and it literally means "cherry blossom." The title of the song means "one thousand cherry blossoms." Just as another random fact, cherry blossoms and cherry blossom viewing activities and picnics when the blossoms are blooming in springtime are a pretty big thing in Japan.

I've met the lead singer, koto player, and shakuhachi player. All three are really nice. Yuko, the singer, is super sweet and really tiny. She was very complimentary of my rudimentary Japanese speaking ability.

When I first saw a few live and official videos by them, in the same way as Chris Cox, the blend of both styles was interesting, and watching her play the Shamisen was pretty cool. The old style singing imo though isn't for everyone.

Thanks for the great review. The 和楽器 Band is amazing and the song 千本桜 is legendary. (Sorry for the Japanese, but I forgot how to spell the names in English) There are about 1000 covers of this song on KZread. The main theme is the many changes that occurred in Japanese culture since it opened up to the rest of the world. A great song for a band that celebrates the power of combining old and new ideas in music.

So glad you guys liked this track. My mother was a koto player so I grew up with the sounds of these instruments so pleased to hear you appreciate there sound. After you've heard more of their music you'll notice that the lead singer incorporates elements of traditional singing style into her singing, so it's a cross over vocally also with traditional elements. Visually also it's a real mix and a nice element to the band. My personal favourite is Synchronicity which is a blend with 1920's Nightclub jazz. Sakura or Cherry blossoms are of course very significant to Japanese people and the lyric to this particular song is worth taking a note of on later listening. But with so much going on and the speed of the track the lyric gets lost a bit.

Thanks for the reaction! I feel like this band is very underrated here in the west, there aren't many reactions to their songs (especially if you compared them to Kpop reactions). I'd recommend Kishikaisei, Strong Fate and Synchronicity next. Or if you'd like to see them live, I'd recommend Homura, (uploaded by IPea Smile, since there isn't an official video) and Yoshiwara Lament (officially uploaded by avex).

The japanese guitar is called Shamisen (shah-me-sehn). There are many different variations, the one that Beni Ninagawa plays is the Tsugaru Shamisen. The japanese flute is called Shakuhachi (shah-coo-hah-tchee), it's a bamboo flute tuned in a pentatonic scale, played by the master Daisuke Kaminaga, a real living legend. The big drums are the Taiko drums or Wadaiko, played by Kurona. These are very traditional and of course a very tribal form of instrument. That horizontal harp is the Koto, played by Kiyoshi Ibukuro. Also it's worth to mention the guitarist Shin Omura (goes by Machiya) uses a very specific type of a 29-fret baritone guitar, which is a regular guitar but with 5 extra frets at the top of the neck, perfect for making arrangements (check the size of that neck). The singer Yuuko Suzuhana sings in a style called Shigin, which is a traditional way of singing poems, that's why it's so peculiar. Wagakki Band is amazing

The drummer Wasabi has the song title written on his back. The japanese flute is called shakuhachi and the big stringed instrument played by fingers is called koto. Did you miss that they actually have 2 drummers. Wasabi on modern western drums and Kurona on traditional japanese wadaiko drums. I really like their song Strong Fate.

Suzuhana Yuko - vocals Machiya - guitar Ninagawa Beni - tsugaru shamisen (a traditional instrument of the Japanese commonly played on certain occasions only, my favorite by the way) Ibukuro Kiyoshi - koto (another traditional string instrument, this the large board with strings in it) Asa - bass Kaminaga Daisuke - shakuhachi (the Japanese wood wind instrument, kinda like a flute like harmonica) Wasabi - drums Kurona - wadaiko (a percussion drum traditional in Japan) Beni and Yuko are my favorite members of the band,

I'm half-Japanese, and your reaction to Wagakki Band is one of my favorites. The lead singer has a unique voice because she is classically trained in Shigin (traditional Japanese poetry recitation/chant) and enka singing. And your reaction to the visuals was awesome. All of their performances are heavily influenced by Japanese visual kei Edit: You should react to Kishikaisei and Synchronicity by Wagakki Band if you like feasts for the eyes and ears

Senbonzakura is a one of those Vocaloid covers. Here's an example: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hKl1z61tndXWlNY.html A bit about Vocaloid: A singer would go into the studio and the software house would sample the singer making all the phonemes of the Japanese language. Then the software will take a melody and a set of lyrics, and generate a voice singing the words to the melody. Finally, the software allows you to animate a virtual person and choreograph his or her movements. The most popular of the lot is a blue-haired teenage girl named Hatsune MIku. She's the one who sings Senbonzakura. Every year the best of all the bazillions of Vocaloid songs are compiled, a live band learns all of 'em, and they go on tour (see "Magical Mirai"). It's just the coolest darned stuff I've come across in a long time, and this from a conservative old dude crowding 60. :D And this is WGB doing the song life back in 2017 kzread.info/dash/bejne/qYaVspiNna66gag.html The song's about how Japanese culture is being lost, drowned in militarism and Western cultural influences.

Wonderful reaction and not hearing about Wagakki band is not that unusual for westerners, we don't know a lot about other countries and their music. But thanks to YT and Babymetal/Band-Maid, we're learning a lot about Japanese music and if you've been listening to this music for a while, you'll see other comments about this or that band, which is how I discovered Wagakki. If you like her voice there are a lot of Japanese bands with great female singers that have unusual and wonderful voices. One singer I especially like is Fuki, she's been in a lot of bands and anime and her voice is very distinctive and powerful. Why do women always moon over the shirtless Wasabi playing the drums? I just don't get it. :-) The beautiful Beni Ninagawa is playing the shamisen, the traditional three string instrument that sounds like a banjo, and is very moonworthy to me.

Sabrina and I haven't done Babymetal yet, but we've gotten recent requests for them. 💕 BJ, who does a Sunday segment on our channel, has reacted to them. We have added them to our list, and are excited to check them out. I haven't heard them yet, but I will be attending their concert in Phoenix in October. I bought BJ tickets as a surprise when I found out they were going to be doing a concert there while I am visiting her. I'm super excited about experiencing them for the first time in a live concert. 💕😘😍🥰 Hugs and love! ~Regina
