GROM is the most famous group, a well-known brand. Polish forces have several special formations apart from GROM. These are AGAT - assault and sabotage unit FORMOZA - divers NIL - reconnaissance JWK - commandos, the oldest special unit 7 EDS- Special Operations Squadron (pilots) In my opinion, AGAT is the "more elite" one, but each of these units are specialists in their field

I don't know what it is like now, but for many years Americans considered GROM ("lightning strike", "thunder") to be the best special forces in the world, better than the Mossad or Navy SEALs . GROM did incredible things (such as freeing American hostages in Iran, no special forces wanted to undertake this, the Americans asked the Poles for help) in a silent, very quick.. "flash" way, without any loss of life.

The quality and operational capability of "Grom" is the result of strict selection when recruiting candidates for this unit. This is done on similar principles to those that existed in Poland before World War II when recruiting to a military aviation school. Out of 3,000 applicants, only 100 applicants were accepted each year. The best of the best were selected, both physically and mentally. This guaranteed a high level of combat skills and effectiveness, as exemplified by the successes of Polish pilots in the Battle of Britain.

GROM operators gained the nickname of "The Surgeons" due to their extensive medical training and knowledge and their surgical ability to coordinate and execute special operations. EDIT: The extension of the abbreviation "GROM" is „Grupa Reagowania Operacyjno-Manewrowego” ("Operational and Maneuver Reaction Group"). There is more in-depth video on GROM, that also describes 4 other such units, from the US, Israel, Canada and Germany; "Inside Eight of the World’s ELITE Tier One Units (What do they do?)". And here: "British Army Soldier Reacts to JW GROM (Polish Elite Special Forces)"

I remember GROM when it was still being established within the structures of the NJW Ministry of Interior and Administration, but it was subordinated directly to the Minister of Interior and Administration. The history of GROM's creation is interesting. The Americans needed to rescue some of their agents, but they did not have time to send their men. The Germans and French decided that the mission was impossible. The task was undertaken by the Polish special forces, and the operation was a complete success. The Americans noticed the potential of Polish special forces and the first GROM soldiers were trained in the USA, in Delta Force. The then American general, after training the 1st generation of GROM, stated that GROM was in no way inferior to Delta Force. Selection to GROM is very strict, for every 10,000 applications, less than 5 people pass the selection, sometimes only 1 passes. During the mountain selection stage, candidates are encouraged to resign. Tempted by a free hotel visit, good food, and a warm bed. This is to catch people who could break during possible torture by the enemy. Interestingly, GROM has lost only 1 soldier in the last 10 years. In my opinion, GROM is in the world's TOP 10 special units. GROM is not the only Polish special unit. There is also FORMOZA (the equivalent of Navy Seals) and AGAT (specializing in sabotage).

Grom is a combination of Western (NATO) and Eastern (USSR) schools. Poles were pioneers in this combination. The standards of the special forces are so high that there are no better or worse ones. There are only results in covert operations. So SAS vs Grom is like comparing an English spoon to a Polish spoon... they both serve the same purpose, they even look the same.

The Polish special unit GROM (Grupa Reagowania Operacyjno-Manewrowego) was created in 1990. GROM was formed to be a rapid reaction force capable of conducting special operations, including counter-terrorism, hostage rescue, and operations behind enemy lines. What is interesting to note is that the links between GROM and the British unit SAS (Special Air Service) date back to the fall of communism in Eastern Europe. At their inception, during the formation of the GROM unit, the Polish benefited from the training and expertise of the British special forces, including the SAS, to develop their own capabilities. Both units have similar missions and share common methods and techniques in special operations. The exchange of knowledge and experiences between GROM and SAS has been beneficial for both units, enhancing their operational effectiveness and their ability to face contemporary threats such as terrorism and asymmetric operations. Although each unit retains its own style and traditions, the cooperation and exchanges between GROM and SAS illustrate the importance of collaboration between the special forces of different countries in addressing international security challenges.

I may not remember everything correctly but from what I remember first 'GROM' unit was assembled in 70's as a fast response unit. After the fall of the USSR. They gained good reputation by a rescue mission requested by the US which was over-occupied at the time and the rest of the NATO countries at the time considered too dangerous but Poles succeeded. Poland wanted to join NATO and that gave them the ticket. Next step was the war in Iraq where they gained their today's fame and currently in many regards are considered more capable than most special units on the same level as the US and the UK, considerably better than Germany or France. At least Europe-wise. There are plenty of resources like videos and literature. It is twisted as Poland was a part of a Soviet Block but they(we) never wanted to be it.

At this level of expertise - there's no comparing; let's just say that Grom is definitely in the top tier of 10 teams (possibly five). They do have competitions and Grom has won once or twice, but to me the best indicament of their ability is "the popularity contest"; when members of all teams were polled on "which foreign team you like working with most" Grom was at the very top at least once (thi may be partly due to the fact that EACH of them, apart from his specialization is ALSO a trained field medic).

Nevertheless, we always have full respect, sympathy and gratitude for these special operations units. The Polish GROM unit maintains close ties and conducts joint operations with US Navy SEALs and other NATO special forces units through military cooperation, joint exercises, training programs, and international operations. Here are some examples of their cooperation: 1. **Joint Exercises**: GROM regularly participates in joint military exercises with US Navy SEALs and other NATO special forces units. These exercises include simulations of combat scenarios, urban warfare training, parachute exercises, and more. 2. **Joint Training**: GROM members often benefit from joint training programs with US Navy SEALs and other NATO special forces units. This includes specialized training courses, parachute training, advanced medical training, and more. 3. **International Operations**: GROM participates in international operations as part of peacekeeping missions, counter-terrorism efforts, and other security missions. During these operations, GROM closely collaborates with US Navy SEALs and other NATO special forces. 4. **Exchange of Experience**: Members of GROM and US Navy SEALs participate in experience exchange programs, where they share knowledge, skills, and best practices in special operations. In summary, GROM maintains close ties with US Navy SEALs and other NATO special forces units through joint exercises, joint training, international operations, and the exchange of experiences. These collaborations strengthen interoperability and cooperation among the special forces of different NATO member countries.

Po co ranking wystarczy poczytać jakie operacje były niemożliwe przez takie oddziały jak SAS czy NEVY SEALS a jakie się tych operacji podjęły i to zrobili.

Special units do not matter. Poland does not have an army. It currently has 160,000 soldiers. Subtract from the total number of newly employed women, cooks, drivers, "soldiers" who work in offices. Half of the staff will remain. Distribute them throughout the country. Good luck. It is also worth saying that these soldiers have nothing to fight with. Soviet and new equipment went to Ukraine. Poland is disarmed. It only looks good on a military parade. That's why I can only rely on NATO's strength. That's why when I hear Polish politicians saying that they want to go to Ukraine, I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

The gtood thing to know is that since GROM was created only one operator was KIA... ONE. They have similar training as SAS and Seals... Saying all that SAS is on a completely different level than Seals and GROM... but for me these three a e the best in the world...

GROM operators are trained in Israel, undergo the most elite courses in the USA, and are trained by SAS. They have the same skills as the SAS and elite US units. Former GROM officers participated in missions in Afghanistan and Iraq. There they also exchanged knowledge with Russian special forces soldiers. Overall, they have some of the best training in the world. I worked with several former GROM officers. Great colleagues. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Simoom
