Yep, Ann Wilson IS the greatest female rock vocalist to ever live, and everybody else is a very distant second, at least in terms of skill and talent, if not influence. Nancy Wilson is easily the most influential female guitarist of her generation and is also a great singer and multi-instrumentalist. These ladies are legendary and yet they're still underrated. They've sold millions of albums and are the most successful female fronted band of all time and yet they still haven't got the true recognition they deserve. THAT's how good they are

And it is all HER...no auto tune. WHat you are watching is pure talent that is missing with much of the entertainment today. This is a live performance and she never failed to give a fantastic performance.

Ann's voice reminds me of a crystal but with a steel rod driven through it, superbly clear but steely strong, unbeatable

Ann Wilson is #1 female rock singer period and in the top 5 ever in rock. Range for days. Ann and Nancy are gems.

You better believe she is the top for female vocalists... It's why she was the perfect choice to sing Stairway to Heaven at The Kennedy Centre Honours for Led Zeppelin. Anne singing Roberts song back to him just as well as he could do it... you could tell it really touched him. As for this song.... I can still remember walking into a record shop in Glasgow one Saturday in 1977 wondering what I should buy..... this was on the shop speakers and so I walked straight up to the counter and bought the album... I didn't care what else was on it...!!!

Ann is a powerhouse. I can't think of any frontwoman better. Her vocal range is insane and still is at 72. You should listen to some of her more recent performances, she still hits those notes, it's insane.. Nancy on the guitar speaks for itself. She's a badass. Such underrated artists and band.

I was 14 living in Burien Washington, just south of Seattle. Heart used to practice in an abandoned 7-11 store near Three Tree Point where I caught the bus for school. We would sit outside listening to them practice after school. You would see them in their matching Porches (Ann’s black, Nancy’s white) around town. Then a couple years later my little sister dated their managers son. Im 62 now, I’ll never forget those years.

I love seeing the younger gen react to the music of my generation. So cool to see these songs hit the same way for them as it did for us.

Heart is a sister group, and they are one of the best groups in the world. Ann's voice, and Nancy's playing, are the core of my teen years. Nothing beats a Heart song.

And she can still sing like this to this day. She is just unreal. This women is looked upon by the younger singers today as the one they aspire to be.

Ann Wilson IS the best female singer of all time. You're not wrong about that.

This is a great rock band that started in the 70's. Ann Wilson has one of the most powerful female voices. And her sister Nancy can play a mean guitar. They have had so many great hits such as "Crazy on You", "Magic Man", "Barracuda", "What About Love", "Never", "Dog & Butterfly", "These Dreams" & "Alone". In 2012 Ann & Nancy performed at the Kennedy Center Honors in a tribute to Led Zeppelin doing their classic song "Stairway To Heaven".

This is a video for the Studio Version, not live. And yes... Ann Wilson is definitely the best female vocalist of her era and yes... this ranks very high as a classic rock song! It is just as loved now as it was when I was a kid in the 70's! They have so many great songs.

Man you're taking me back almost 45 years here. I saw them in August 1977 on their "Little Queen" tour. Magic Man & Crazy on You from this same time frame is a must see.

In the 70s, there were VERY few hard rock female singer/songwriters out there. We had ABBA, Fleetwood Mac, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin was gone, Patti Smith was a rock force to contend with, but Patti was more of a punk poet in her approach. Kate Bush had begun breaking every rule by this time, although an extraordinary voice, Kate was not hard rock. Actually the ONLY real competitor would be Pat Benetar, and she arrived on the scene at least 5 years after the Wilson sisters. But in the end, Ann Wilson was clearly among those special ones; Freddy Mercury, Robert Plant, Steve Perry, Ann Wilson... I think Ann's most extraordinary vocal work is the song 'Mistral Wind' from 'Dog and Butterfly' check it out and tell me if you think they were just trying to be Zeppelin, or were Heart much like Rush, actually another band that carried the same calibre of weaponry??

I agree with your awesome Heart comments. Just gotta say that ABBA, Fleetwood Mac, Jefferson Airplane and Kate Bush are NOT hard rock singers/songwriters. ABBA was pop, plain and simple (and awesome!), and Benny and Bjorn wrote the music. Cheers!

I'm speaking as someone who listened to the album about a million times. This is the studio version set to the video from a concert.

Ann got mono as a kid...and while bedridden got a guitar..but nancy who didn't get sick kept picking it up and was just naturally talented so they bought another guitar..ann and Nancy are Rock and roll royalty and they're magnificent musicians

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Ann and Nancy.....legendary! Ann tops the genre as the voice of Rock and Roll. Pat Benatar is another. Grace Slick is another. The Queens of Rock.

And.....notice just how GREAT the two voices blend together. They're sisters and many times the combination of singers who are related to each other results in some real magic.......But, yeah. Greatest female lead and she's a great writer too.......

Ann Wilson definitely has a prominent place on the Rock & Roll Mt. Rushmore. For my money, she's the greatest of the female rock vocalists, but I know others might argue that claim. As for this being the official music video, in the 70s that was mostly what music videos were. The band in a studio performing the song. They didn't really become cinematic until the early 80s.

You might want to check out The Pretenders. Chrissie Hynde is another female vocalist that ranks up there as well. Trivia fact...Nancy Wilson, the blonde guitarist was married to Cameron Crowe, the director of the movie Almost Famous.

Female rock vocalist... #1 without question. All rock vocalists, I think it's her and Freddie. A case could be made for either, but her voice is just so unbelievably free. Even on those nutty belts, it feels like she could just keep going and 12 hours later it would sound exactly the same.

I’m obsessed with Dreamboat Annie and Little Queen. People have no idea what Ann and Nancy were doing in the seventies. Love Alive is amazing as a live performance video - Ann busts out a fuckin flute!! And yet keeps the song heavy. So good.

Saw them live back in the day!! They were actually better live!!! Didn't want it to end!!

I saw them live as well and I definitely agree with you. I've been to a lot of concerts in my day and I can honestly say Heart is one of the very few bands who sound better live. Very few bands or singers are part of that club..

Hearts first album is super solid rock album. Maybe try “Magic Man”

I just remembered the amazing Linda Ronstadt. She started out as a kind of country rocker with the Eagles as her backing band, hitting peak in the mid 70s but eventually moved into harder rock, standards, mariachi music and even light opera. One of my all time favorite tracks of her is Someone To Lay Down Beside Me.

70s Heart - rock songs. 80s Heart - love songs Barracuda was written about the record company executive who, after signing a record deal with Heart, wanted to celebrate with BOTH Wilson sisters. (If you get the idea)

I agree , when you consider power, tone, attitude and the way she uses inflections, she has the perfect rock voice which is unmatched by any female and only a few males are on her level (as far as rock)

Ann Wilson is without a doubt a top tier and rare vocalist that is unrivaled by most any of her peers. Her range and rock sensibility are virtually unchallenged. I grew up in the 60's and graduated in the early 70's and saw so many great rock acts over my lifetime growing up in Northern California and Heart is one of them. In almost all cases those classic rock acts from this era have no competition in quality, creativity, breadth and diversity. Then I discovered Floor Jansen, just saying.

One can never mistake Ann's voice for someone else. Like RP, who also has that iconic classic rock voice, she can basically just sing anything and sound amazing. I like that you're starting out with these older tracks, it's laying a good foundation for anything that comes after. The base sound as far as the guitar and drums go, it really reminds me of Kashmir. It's repetitive and may not be super complicated, but it's literally 2 of their best songs respectively. I vote for Crazy on You next! I can send a link so you have the best one for when you react to it (whenever that will be). I'm not sure about band but if someone else said then it must be true lolol.

Heart swiped the baseline from Zeppelin's Achilles Last Stand for Barracuda.

I saw Heart Live 1977 in Atlanta GA, . I will never forget it, and my children are 70's music lovers. I raised them right, lol.

I went to see April Wine in 1975 and the back up band was Heart. The whole concert was amazing and who knew Heart would blow up so fast. We had the best music in the 70’s and 80’s and this is the closet to a time machine you can get to go back there and remember how you felt first time hearing them.

I hope you are still listening to this song...I am...and have been since the 70's...never gets old! Great reaction.

Ann is the most powerful female singer I have ever heard, but Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane had a really powerful voice too and never underestimate the pure power of Cher's voice. Besides all of the other genres she conquered, she fronted a hard rock band in the late 70s/early 80s called Black Rose and held her own in a duet with the bombastic Meatloaf called A Real Dead Ringer For Love

They have been playing since 1967 (under other names) and as Heart since 1973. There have been 30 or so members who have come and gone during that time. Ann plays flute and sings, Nancy is her sister, and she plays rhythm guitar and vocals. They also have a lead guitar, a drummer, a bassist, and usually a keyboardist. There really weren't music videos as such when Baraccuda came out in 1977. MTV didn't go on the air until 1981, so people didn't really focus on visuals except in performance. Ann is my favorite singer. She is high on everone's list, for sure, but some might argue for where at the top she goes with singers like Grace Slick, Joni Mitchell, Patty Smith, Janis Joplin, and later, Debbie Harry, Stevie Nicks, Joan Jett, and Pat Benatar, and later yet, Amy Lee and Lzzy Hale, among many others. I was born in 1967 and grew up on Heart, since my brothers were much older and shaped my musical tastes. I very seldom go to concerts because crowds bug me, but I've seen Heart live 4 times, which is the most of any other band or artist. I always wanted to sing like Ann. I think when you did Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven I suggested you listen to Heart's performance of the song at the Kennedy Center honors for Led Zeppelin. I still highly recommend...it's epic.

In the 70’s grouping, yes Pat Benatar and one very important one you didn’t mention… Linda Ronstadt. Both these Ladies were Opera trained. And Linda covered a lot of Spectrums. Country, Rock, Mariachi, Opera and so on.

This was so good. I really hope you react to more Heart. They are definitely one of the best bands of the 70s/80s. I grew up in that time period and I can't think of any woman who had such a strong voice made for rock. Of course, Stevie Nicks is also amazing and original but but her sound, though rock, is more ethereal. You should check her out too. But first, more Heart!

This is a Zeppelin style song similar to Achilles Last Stand. The original Heart lineup was fantastic, guitarists,drummer, everyone.

Also if you listen to the soundtrack of the movie ALMOST FAMOUS (that came out circa 2000), Nancy Wilson (the guitarist) wrote all the songs the rock band in the movie plays. Both sisters are very talented.

Might want to also check out Jefferson Airplane song “ Somebody to Love” or “White Rabbit” and hear what Heart was listening to. Also Big Brother and Holding Company “Ball and Chain”. Both bands sixties pioneers.

That Wilson sisters could definitely rock the stadium. Saw them in 1979 and 1981 at The Day of Rock and Roll in the New Orleans Superdome. One of the greatest rock bands in my life time.

Ann is in her early 70s now and in the last couple of days found a cover of bridge of sighs by robin trower she did with kenny wayne shepherd on lead.it's bang on.

She was so legit, she was stand alone period... and then others played magnificently. I only now, after several decades found out the other outstanding base was a female and back up vocalist. My hat, my bows deservedly belong to you. Well done "B.A.N.D."

No disrespect to Nancy but the driving guitar sound of Heart in the 70s was Roger Fisher. When he was fired in 1980 Heart became a very different sounding band.

I think early on Nancy mostly played a lot of acoustic guitar. I know when Fisher left their keyboardist Howard Leese (who also played rhythm guitar at the time) became the lead guitarist and Nancy started playing more electric guitar.

AS FAR AS HARD ROCK SINGERS, PAT BENATAR IS RIGHT UNDER HER. HE VOICE IS JUST MAGIC. HER SISTER NANCY IS ONE OF THE BEST GUITARISTS OF ALL TIME TOO. MAN OR WOMAN. INSANE TECHNIQUE

Ann Wilson is a remarkable vocalist. And yes there are others. Linda Ronstadt and her song Blue Bayou. And also Pat Benatar with Promises in the Dark. These two Women will definitely give Ann a run for the money!

They hit a dry patch late 70's and early 80's - so they fired most of the band, got hired hacks, and got songwriters - they moved to middle of the road radio with their radio friendly hits - however, the earlier original stuff, much much better.

Ann Wilson & Stevie Nicks reigned at the top of the charts & were Rock royalty as far as the tier system was back then. Ann's power & vocal range were very good and her stage presence was a commanding one. Heart gets a ton of respect from any Classic Rock critic. Pat Benatar ruled the 80's as far as female Rock vocalists, but the 70's were all Ann & Stevie easily.

"How Can I Refuse" was not one of their biggest hits, but it is an amazing song.

Next I would do Crazy on You before you hit any of their later stuff to get a feel for early Heart (Dog & Butterfly also to see their softer side) Heart was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of fame in 2013. Other female voices: Janis Joplin blues/rock Joni Mitchell: folk Carol King: folk/pop Tina Turner: soul/rock Linda Ronstadt: rock/folk/country/classic/Spanish/pop she did it all!

When Ann mentioned what the song meant, I laughed. Her writing it was classic , it has a deep meaning. and yes it was wrote out of rage.

I am 57 years old and remember a lot of the music from the 70s and 80s. Heart and Ann Wilson are definitely one of my favorite bands from that era. There were a few other female vocalists from that time period that you might want to check out. Most of them were more Pop music. Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac, Karen Carpenter of The Carpenters, Helen Reddy, Anne Murray and Olivia Newton-John. Those are the only other female vocalists that I can remember from the 70s. A few more came along in the 80s, but Heart started in the 70s. I really enjoy their music.

I spent a lot of my life obsessing over the guitar in this song before realizing that the drums are the real story. Fantastic. Oh, and this is the studio track over a live performance. This performance with its live audio IS out there, though.

If you want Heart chills, check out the song “Mistral Wind”, studio version from the Dog and Butterfly album, my fave by far by them. The first track “Cook With Fire” is much like Barracuda, but a bit harder rocking. Mistral Wind starts soft and acoustic, but turns dark and real heavy. Chill bumps baby!
