What a great surprise you reacting to Wintersun. Jari Mäenpää, the vocalist/guitarist is like Tuomas Holopainen, a musical genius. Not only is he responsible for Wintersun's music, but on two of their three studio albums he also played all the instruments, except the debut album with Kai Hahto on drums. P.S. The kanji on the neck of Teemu's green guitar means "Time" or "A moment".

Jari is a mega talented guy. Besides his songwiting skills, he can shred on guitar with the best of them. He loves to post videos on his YT channel, some of them very silly. But there was one of him just sitting in his underwear shredding on his guitar for about 15 minutes, insane. He recently gave up playing guitar too to concentrate on the vocals, when performing live.

The more I listen to this band, the more I like them. Nice guitar work and good, varied vocals. I like the fact that you can understand him even when he's doing the harsh vocals. Amazing vocals considering he's missing part of his lungs. Also, this is quite emotional considering how heavy it is...I find a lot of heavy music to be quite one-dimensional (angry!) but this brings more color to the palette of sound. Great stuff! Cheers!

It's really about what the sound represents... What emotion it provokes or expresses. How it furthers the story being told or understanding of the music. Many times distorted instruments or vocals are used in expressing extreme emotional states... Many times our clean singing voices can not truly capture the intensity of our emotions... It took years for me to appreciate more extreme vocals. But when it's appropriate to the music screams and growls can be as beautiful and emotionally impactful as the most powerful clean vocals. To some it can cause anxiety or fear... To This i say that many times this is exactly what these vocals are meant to provoke... But they can also be used to emote pain, rage, sadness, hopelessness, frustration, insanity, challenge, perseverance, victory.., I could go on and on. It's all about context. It's sad that it is by many people screams and growls are equated to and expression of darkness or evil without really considering the deeper meaning of the music.

Thanks for this! I'm generally not a big fan of growling vocals, but I kinda like it at the pitch Jari uses. It blends in very well with the music. Also, he uses it sparingly. I probably wouldn't like it if he'd do it for entire songs. Of the other 2 songs they recorded at the Sonic Pump studios, "Sons of Winter and Stars" is more heavy and aggressive of the 3, while "Land of Snow and Sorrow" is the more melancholic. I love them all, though I think you'll like LoSaS better.

Insomnium - Winter's Gate Can you do a forty minute song? It was #1 in finland. Based on a short story written by Niilo Sevänen (vocals, bass) about a group of Vikings who set out on a quest to find a fabled land north-west of Ireland during a harsh winter, “Winter's Gate” marks the first album where Insomnium tread into native lands of experimentation by creating one epic 40 minute song.

Sons of Winter and Stars is a kind of main showpiece of the band, it's perhaps a bit less coherent as a song with its 4 distinct parts which go into different directions, but it's wonderful all the way through. The work gone into making the song was simply insane, it has like a full album worth of music condensed into one song in a kind of controlled chaos.

Time is relative in physics and in us, time is never linear it's always highly subjective, we were used to measure time by movement in older clocks or nowadays digital but its also measured by physical transitions which makes us believe that time is linear but not for us and in physics not even in Newton's mechanics but especially not in quantum mechanic and relativistic mechanic.
