My understanding is that Jari wrote the entire arrangement (for all of at least Time I) EXCEPT drums which he didn't feel qualified for, so he asked Kai to write that part. AFAIK both Kai (now official Nightwish member) and Jukka (bass, new session/live bass player for Nightwish) are still full members of Wintersun, even though they have another drummers replacing Kai live (three different so far and they're all pretty damned good too, I sweat it must be something in the water in Finland). We'll see how Wintersun will handle the Bass duties in the future if Jukka keeps on playing with Nightwish (which tends to have a fairly heavy touring schedule). If someone wants to see how nutty what Kai is doing here there's videos on youtube from eXtreme Drummers Universe 2014 where we get an uninterrupted playthrough of it, I think it's good to have seen the real version (this) first but it does showcase how insane the drums in this is (and that the reason he's so sweaty isn't the song itself, it's that they've done LOTS of songs back-to-back at that point). There's also drumcam version of him playing but to a non-drummer they're much less useful. The biggest drawback of all those videos is that they're all 25 or 30fps videos which means Kai is often partially blurry, it's just not fast enough to fully capture Kai properly! Kai is just a machine turned up to 200mph on the drums, I love Wintersun, so emotive and brilliant at expressing the seasons on the album. Jari is the main driving force of Wintersun and his vocals are powerful whether singing cleans or growling. Jukka (the Bass player) is pretty solid too.

On these live sessions, it's Jari, Kai, Teemu and Jukka on bass. About the drummers, Marko from Nightwish compared them both on a documentary about the first album recorded with Kai (Jukka stepped out during that albuns' recording rehearsals). He said something on the lines of "Kai represents the Ian Paice school, while there's more John Bohnam in Jukka's playing." Link for the documentary bellow. Marko's regard starts at about the 1:20:30 mark: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eI6Vm8izlcKndsY.html

Jukka has better hair than Kai. Mine’s on the way out now. I kept most if it until I reached 50. It’s a shame Jukka got injured out, but he’s right to have people remember him playing at the top of his game and not as a shadow of what he was. Thanks! A few details about Kai - He is actually Left Handed, but back in the day when he learned how to play the drums (at the age of 6) he did it like everyone else - Right Handed. Nowadays he can choose to play Right Hand Lead or Left Hand Lead, whatever works best for a song. When he is studying a new song he usually learns how to do it in 4 ways, Right and Left Hand Lead, crossed over Right and Left, and crossed over the other way around, Left - Right. His drum kit is basically symmetrical, Right and Left side. 2 Hi-Hays, a moving one on the Left side and a permanently closed Hi-Hat on the Right side. I can also add that he has a rather humble and modest view of himself, in an interview on the DrumTalk Channel on KZread he was asked if he sees himself as a Drummer, a Musician or an Artist. His answer was a Drummer - Yes; A Musician also Yes, a Musician who's music is rhythm; but an Artist - No, he thought he needs to be more creative to be able to call himself an Artist. I could write quite a lot more about Kai, but instead I'll throw in a link to Pearl Drums website about Kai Hahto, there are some very interesting things to see there. There is a couple of Drum Cam videos on that page, you have already watched a "Ghost Love Score"- video with Nightwish so it's "risk-free" for you to have a look at that one, to see how Kai plays that song. "Wishmaster" - No, you haven't seen/heard that song yet. The 3rd video is this song that we just have seen so that one too is ok for you to watch. Cheers / B. pearldrum.com/eu/artist/kai-hahto/13196

Ahh! I love that I'm not the only one gushing about Kai's drumming! I've seen all his drum cams, clinics and warm-ups so many times. I love when he switches the lead hand mid-song. Tiny, periodic slips w his left foot (which handles two pedals. Right?). I just love watching him as much as hearing, bc his posture is perfect...he rarely raises an elbow above his heart, totally relaxed. All wrists and fingers. So impressive, every single time! Awesome!!! Thanks for another fabulous video 😁 I found these guys thanks to Kai being in Nightwish 👍 Recommendation - Eluveitie (pronounced El-Vay-Tee) Rebirth official video!!! They’re Swiss folk (death?) metal with heavy influences from Celtic lore and culture. Rebirth was the Celtic term and belief for death as we know it. There’s two flutes/whistles, violin, hurdy gurdy (harmonizing with distorted electric guitars at times), a harp, and amazing vocals in a driving blast of metal that’ll rearrange a few of your neurons 😁 You won’t be disappointed!!! Thanks again and please keep doing what you’re doing 🤘😎🎸

My own opinion is that there are songwriters and composers. Jari Mäenpää and Tuomas Holopainen belong to the category of composers. I respect them both and I like the music they make. It is often said that Finland is the metal capital of the world. It may not be a mere saying if you look at the numbers. Some years ago, it was calculated how many metal bands are in relation to a million people in each country. Finland's figure was 630, and it was by far the number one! For Sweden, which came in second, the figure was 428. Third place went to Iceland in 341. Fourth was Norway, 299. Fifth Greece 162, sixth Denmark 154 and seventh Estonia 138. Looking at the figures, it is clear that the Nordic countries and Estonia are in the top positions, with Greece being the only representative of southern Europe. And also note how fast the ratios are going down! So, I think it is OK to say that Finland is the metal capital of the world. About 650,000 people live in the Finnish capital, Helsinki. And there are 734 metal bands in Helsinki! (Bands like Wintersun, Amorphis ...) Now if you are thinking of a beginner metal band in Finland, you have to be really skilled and original to get through. You can only get to the top with skills ... Everyone has to fight for a “place in the sun! So weak bands are eliminated who might be able to live in some other country? Of the Wintersun members in this video, Teemu (green Ibanez guitar) and Kai (drums) are also teachers of their own instruments.

Kai has been playing drums since he was 5 or so, so I'm betting at this point he really doesn't have to think too much about what he is presently doing, except in specific parts. Also, Kai's nickname is "The Machine". And I call bands like WinterSun and Night Wish "Metal Theatre". Now do "Time" from the same session.

Hi Erik. Big fan of yours here, with his three kids, who are also big fans (just a side note). There is something I have been looking for in reactions to this song and I thought I am going crazy, or it is just not there. Of course it is marvellous and insane, a journey-like into the medieval realm which could be driven back to Mozart, Vivaldi, Bach, and their conpadres (they would be the biggest metal musicians of these times with contemporary instruments on hand). But.... at 6:45 (in your video), up to 6:46 (1 second total), you see the complete opposite of what you are hearing. I am sure you will see it when you are looking for it, but I am in need of an explanation. Based on physics (sound production, propagation, e.a.), you should see Yaari's hand moving the opposite direction, but it's the other way round. Is there some guitar witchcraft witch i am not aware of? Lots of love from Transylvania............. :)

Great video, it’s awesome to hear your thoughts on this song! Time I came out when I was in high school, and I remember driving around blaring the cd in my car. I thought I was so cool (I wasn’t). Kai is definitely a beast of a drummer! If you want another progressive rock/metal band with a beast on the kit (Wintersun is 100% prog, btw), check out Leprous - Slave (Live at Rockefeller). Their drummer, Baard Kolstad, is totally different in style to Kai but also an absolute force.

Great to watch that reaction video. Wintersun is not my perfect cup of tea, but I can take it. It is just amazing, how skilled these dudes are, all of them. When I listen to them, I get same vibes as you did; they are like Steely Dan with a bit heavier aspect or approach for the composition. This song could be done by SD, it might be a bit different tho :). But, keep on rockin'.

One of the differences between this and Weak Fantasy is that Kai wrote the drum parts for this song. Weak Fantasy even though it was on the first album that Kai played on was most likely written before he joined, as Tuomas was writing during the 2012-2013 tour, so he wouldn't have had as much inout on it. So yeah Jari composes these complex Wintersun songs and sings while playing rhythm guitar. While that in itself is impressive you should rewatch it and take note of how long he is sustaining some of those lines, as he caught TB while in the army and had to have about 20% of one of his lungs removed. Kai has a Licks & Tricks video where he breaks down some of the parts of this this song it is very interesting as well. Also small note this is Jari, Kai, Jukka & Teemu. Asim is not here. I'm not sure when this was recorded because I think Asim was with the band when it was released , or at least by the first time I saw it. Anyway Asim takes over the rhythm guitar part so Jari can concentrate fully on the vocals.

Amazing and interesting analysis and I agree that Kai is a beast and a human metronome and he's not only a world class drummer but a drum teacher too. Kai definitely belongs in a short list talent wise with the likes of drummers like Danny Carey, Mike Portnoy, Mike mangini, among others who belong in rock and metal drumming top ten. His speed and accuracy are second to none really (Danny Carey is a freak of nature too though).

An absurd, complicated overload of musical noise. That is one of the many good things of progressive metal. You can stretch it out like there is no tomorrow and be as skillfull and passionate as you can be. Limitlesness sometimes creates freedom and that has become a rare thing in the music industrie. For that matter I like it a lot. Another interesting name is 'Gojira'. It's a French band with a totally different approach. Its considered as one of the best metal bands at this moment. They once blew the guys of Metallica of their socks as a little and unknown supporting act. Gojira is now headlining many festivals. You could say they make innovative metal with the same passion as Wintersun. They have also a very prominent percussionist, last year chosen as the worlds best metal drummer (whatever that means). May be fun to check that band and drummer out some time. If so I recommend 'The Axe' live at Brixton (just one of the many good tracks in their big catalogue). Thank you for your passionate reaction!

Instead of using a normal interface, I'm running all audio through a Behrringer 6 channel mixer that is running a heavy duty insulated USB into my PC containing the best sound and graphics cards, and the return is through Bose surround with sub. My mic is a Shure MV7 using XLR as opposed to USB into the mixer, which also gives me separate mic control to eliminate feedback. What I'm hearing is completely separate than what is going into the recording software, which is set to certain input levels to match the mic with Auto-Normalization and modulation with a built in Pre Amp. I could max my return levels and shake my windows, and you'd never hear it in the recording that I've turned up my volume here. If I'm mixing, I may wear headphones to hear exact points of mix, but when sitting here, I'm surrounded by professional sound. All installed and maintenance by a 50 year radio engineer. I also do Voice Over work from this studio, so it's not just me and a mic plugged in. Then there's the sound proofing on the walls, ceiling, and soundproof drapes. Hope that answers your question! Eric

Thinking of Seal, his performance at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert is worth watching. It’s on KZread. I saw him live a couple of days beforehand and he spent about half the show singing in the aisles or stood on people’s seats. He maintains no distance between himself and the audience. I heard him singing from about six feet away.
