Holy wars is probably the best thrash metal song ever composed. And I'm not saying it because I like Megadeth, I like Metallica too and many other thrash bands, but technically speaking, it's a masterpiece.

Yeah this is like Beethoven’s fifth. It’s literally a masterpiece. There are a lot of great songs and awesome bands out there, but this is just my personal opinion: this is indeed the greatest thrash metal song of all time.

imo tornado of souls is better

First part of the song is about Catholics Vs Protestants in Northern Ireland, second part is based on the comic "The Punisher". Fucking awesome song.

That bass intro for Peace sells was used as the intro to MTV News for years

Friedman has few solos on this song and mustaine only has one 9:59 but that's the one people remember

For a guy that got kicked out of Metallica (they proceeded to use his riffs for their FIRST THREE ALBUMS) he sure bounced the fuk back. 50 million records sold with Megadeth and all those song writings Metallica credits Dave has been living well for yrs. No Mustaine.. no thrash metal. PERIOD. Straight outta James Hetfields mouth. DO MORE MEGADETH!!

You're looking over Slayer? There's a lot of bands that preceded Megadeth that had that sound, little bit of Black Sabbath Maybe? Old Molly Hatchet? No doubt it is a breed of its own now but everything has its roots. Thrash still would have happened it may not have had as much flavor but it still would have happened because it was happening anyway a little Twisted Sister you say? Just giving a little friendly push back in the pit on your comment not saying you're wrong just pushing back a little

I know this is old, and I love both Megadeth and Metallica, but Dave has no credits on Master of Puppets and his credits on Ride the Lightning were for two riffs total out of all the riff changes on that album. In other words, Metallica put out what’s considered their crowning achievement without Mustaine. Would they have risen if Dave stayed? Maybe, maybe not. Mustaine was volatile as hell. Angry drunks don’t mix well with happy drunks, and Dave was a mean drunk. His work on Kill em All is good, though I think Mechanix lacks the maturity and depth that The Four Horsemen has. Rust in Peace is a diamond of an album, it’s amazing and I had it on repeat for a long time when it first released.

Also you should put this in a Cold War context. Pretty much everything was in a Cold War context at that point.

Thats why they used to put the lyrics inside the cassett.

That strange breakdown rhythm that you remarked is done with what is called "natural harmonics". That is, he lightly touches (without actually holding it down) the thickest string in a position that produces those sounds (in this case around the 3rd fret) and then picks and palm mutes it. What happens in terms of physics is you're muting the fundamental sound and let one of the higher harmonics sound. You can obtain nice harmonics at several points of a string, basically at every simple fraction of the string length. At the 12th fret (which is at 1/2 of the string), at the 7th (2/3 of string), 5th fret (3/4), 4th fret (4/5), 3rd fret (5/6) and so on... Dave Mustaine likes to use them, you can also hear upper harmonics at the very beginning of Tornado of Souls, those higher notes in the opening riff.

Yea, I can see someone claim that James is better at writing riffs than Dave (I would still disagree with that, but I love James' songwriting), but Dave can outplay James easily.

Peace Sells was used the the 2002 game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Some might remember-for that matter I think Slayer's Raining Blood was too, but perhaps that's a stretch.

As far as your comment on your fandom of metal music, one of the great things about metalheads is we are generally very inclusive of newer fans coming in. Separating Hetfield and Mustaine was the best thing that could happen. They are both original writers and players. If they stuck together, their music might be messy, different, and most likely argued about until they did separate... Peace Sells and Master of Puppets wouldn't exist...

I had Far Beyond Driven at original release and ended up selling it off....then in the early 00s I re-found them and got back into them. Phil's vocals are right at my threshold of not liking the growl kind of singing.

Gday from Australia. Tornado of souls has possibly the best metal solo of all time if want very in depth lyrics songs like Washington is next and endgame great slower song is symphony Of destruction. I rabble on for ever on songs but Megadeth is a awesome band. All ways displayed awesome guitar rifting and solos and intricate great clever lyrical content

Megadeth is great with the retention and great on looping back to the original Rhythm after taking you on a side track. Also they do back beats all the time and do them well, another great song with terrific content is bread line from Megadeth and another song from Metallica that is pretty freaking awesome off the B-side of 1 is called breadfan or the other b side of the one single is the prince both pretty badass songs and I'm a Megadeth fan over Metallica but I can give them props where they are due. Another band that you might want to check out is Opeth, a song called porcelain heart extremely fast extremely slow extremely intricate great vocals and awesome BackBeat Melody. Give it a shot I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Flat-out guarantee it. I could never give you your time back so I would never guarantee something that is going to waste it. You obviously know a lot about music, Even if not rock and metal specifically. You’ve got an insightful, intelligent perspective on everything. I listen to a bunch of these reactions and most of them are people that say how cool some thing is or wow that’s neat or something like that. Megadeth is one of the most political bands I’ve heard with a message that’s geared towards the right. The anti war, anti corruption message is crystal clear. Wake up.

I consider myself a Metallica guy in that argument but don't get it twisted because Megadeth has carved out their own legacy in metal--I just find Metallica more my speed. I think Dave's vocals is what holds off my liking Megadeth more than I do, but I do like a handful of Megadeth songs and respect the musicianship.

Fun Fact: Metallica stole the opening riff of Enter Sandman from Excel's Tapping into the Emotional Void.
