John, I have a solid background in the electrical and electronics support in the coal mining industry. The main field was research and development of power supplies for underground use. Very stringent performance parameters of course were required. Research in the feasability of lithium batteries for underground mining is not even considered. A personal experience with a lithium battery suffering thermal runaway convinced me that lithium is nothing more than an unstable and unreliable substance. It is more suitable for destructive military use. I overcharged by 20% a small lithium battery about 40mm long by 20mm diameter. There was an explosion first ,it flew of the bench and onto the floor. It was glowing red hot and no exaggeration here , it burned it's way into a ceramic floor tile. I will never be foolish enough to even consider buying an ev with any form of lithium battery.
@ianknight4333

They don't take petrol powered vehicles in underground mines either. The fire risk of evs is not a recent revelation. Heaps of studies reported on the internet. Any time one catches fire it makes news but lots of studies say the probability of catching fire is lower than for ICEs. Yeh I know stats and the internet. They're here. Petrol heads will just have to get used to it.

The number of structure fires caused by lithium-ion batteries has almost doubled in the last two years, according to new statistics from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES). WA. Last year, firefighters responded to 64 structure fires caused by lithium-ion batteries, up from 34 in 2020. Firefighters have already been called to 32 of these incidents in 2023, with the State now in its busiest period of the year for residential fires.
Actually John, having a number of EVs on fire in a garage is actually good news. Surely you’ve heard the expression fighting fire with fire, eh?

it depends on the battery chemistry too, all the tesla standard range cars and the newer chinese cars now use LFP batteries which dont have cobalt, these are yet to catch fire as far as im aware and are far safter...they just did not have the battery density needed at the beginning but they have improved and are now becoming the new standard.. There will also be LFP batteries with manganese added so this will improve the battery densitiy more and still be safe.

I have been driving a small EV since 2016 and would never go back to the hassle of ICE. Firstly the cars I have owned include three Jaguars (one a 5.3l V12), a 4 litre Jeep Grand Cherokee, 2 Ford Granadas and several Cortinas, Rovers, Vauxhall Omegas, Mitsubishi and Mazdas and dozens of others in 50 years of driving in the UK and Europe (and occasionally in the US). My only complaint is that the car has limited range (from new) but this is more to do with my wife's preferences. I don't love the car because the French stereo/radio is insane (though the sound is good when it works properly) but it is comfortable fast, convenient and a pleasure to drive: it is still excellent after seven years and it is as good now as it was new. It carries a surprising amount of cargo and is comfortable for four or five adults. I have never run out of charge and it always delivers more range than I expect. I drive within the speed limit as i often have a child in the car but I accelerate away from the lights faster than almost every other car. I have enjoyed driving for work and pleasure all my life and feel sorry for all those who talk shit about electric cars. Forty years ago I spent weekends repairing cars on the front drive, like my Dad before me: I was twelve when I first assisted him in changing a gearbox in his taxi and I was well into my thirties before I could afford to take my motors to professional mechanics. BTW my car costs less then £100 per year to service and the only costs are tyres. Mine is not a particularly "good" electric car and my next will be much better but it beats the shit out of all those petrol and diesel money pits. I have not mentioned climate change because although I believe it is a looming diaster, it is not why I drive electric: I do that because it is better and cheaper.

John, Great stuff and to those of us that fly electric RC airplanes, we have been dealing with thermal runaway fires from the beginning of the electric models powered by same. Rather depressing to have your expensive model burst into flame during a flight. Not a week goes by without at least one battery fire. We get a warning though.....if you pay attention, you can see the battery case showing swelling.....a precurser to a runaway. Going further, the suppliers have told us for years to not charge near anything flammable and we are instructed to keep the batteries in a steel ammo box, again, away from anything flammable. I have been surprised from the onset of lithium powered cars, that this is considered a 'safe' alternative to petrol. We keep a steel drum to throw a smoldering battery into so we don't start the woods on fire. Love your stuff from the U.S.A.........keep it up!

Hi John, Your commentary is well justified. The situation is that with respect to EVs we are actually very early in the technological cycle, about where ICE vehicles and aircraft were around 1925. In those days untoward accidents arising from underdeveloped designs were common place. My Dad's Austin 7 caught fire going up Tumble Down Dick. With its wooden frame, aluminium body and horse hair and capoch stuffed seating it quickly burnt to the ground. Rather than banning ICEV, manufacturers soon learnt that gravity feed fuel tanks located on top of the engine were not such a good idea and moved it to the rear of the vehicle and incorporated a fuel pump. In the 1930s my late uncle died when the wing fell off his Puss Moth. Rather than banning wings (and flying) engineers worked out how to make wings stronger, not subject to sudden catastrophic failure. The issue with safety of BEVs is exactly the same. If there are safety flaws in these vehicles engineers need to observe, learn and work out how to fix them. Unfortunately, Australia having ditched it's auto manufacturing capacity won't have much to contribute, we will just have to wait while someone sorts this out for us. This is a pity because the Australian environment does present challenges to the adoption of BEVs such as high ambient temperatures, long distances and rough roads. If we had been part of the solution it could have been a significant contribution to the progress of mankind. As it stands we look more like a plug in the arsehole if progress.
JC, a man who loves his work.
Thanks for the overview and for your information on EVs in general. My neighbour with a very fancy electric Hyundai is convinced that EVs are getting better all the time, cobalt is gone, and also he can repair and resell his electric bike on eBay with no worries. He parks his car in his garage and keeps his bike there too. Maybe, and he lives a half km away on a hill top so I'm not too worried, but I'm starting to get concerned about all the old lithium batteries from defunct weed whippers, electric drills, Telstra monstrosities and the like that are building up at my place. I have recycled a few in the past, but it is somewhere between an inconvenience (ie a long drive just to drop off a dead battery) and an extreme annoyance (like when I spent 40 minutes in line to dispose of my dead computer at the dump). If lithium ion batteries are a clear and present danger, then why don't local governments have a regular pick-up/recycling? (NB- I just got my rates bill and I'm not feeling well served by my local government (Queensland, semi-rural)).

I think this video was very productive in regards to clarifying some of your points that some people seem to misinterpret on a weekly basis.
Thank you for doing this At the start of this, my take is: EVs, really any cars, rarely catch fire just sitting there They do sometimes catch fire charging, especially the cheap and new brands to electric (including Tesla when they were new) They sometimes catch from debris on the road when driving But regardless of how the fire starts, if there's an EV in the way (or a backup battery) the fire will be catastrophic I charge my EV outside I think my neighbour was badly advised when they installed their home battery next to the front door I'm looking forward to getting an update

Co2 makes up less than 0.04 % of the atmosphere. By volume, the dry air in Earth's atmosphere is about 78.08 percent nitrogen, 20.95 percent oxygen, and 0.93 percent argon. A brew of trace gases accounts for the other approximately 0.04 percent, including the gases carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and ozone.

@21:25 Maybe we are not addressing the problems of the major polluters at the production end because these are really difficult to resolve. Maybe we are concentrating on minor polluters like, cars, gas stoves and domestic electricity use because there's a lot of quick and easy money to be made at this consumer end of the problem.

Like buying a big diesel tradie ute to run around town. But EV cultists get so offended if you criticise anything about the vehicle, charging, their special parking areas or the numerous faults. And that leads to comical joy for the rest of us.

If a fire occurred in a parking station, just getting the fire fighting gear to the car would be a whole logistical issue in itself.
Thank you for your ‘non-word salad’ opinions and explanations . Very refreshing. I am impressed with your ideas (not surprised because you are an engineer and understand complex systems). If we had 151 engineers in parliament instead of politicians (who have never worked a day in the real world in their lives) not only would the problems be solved, they would probably have been avoided.

@@leisuresuitlaz1710 engineers solve technical problems. Nothing wrong with that. But the point about the Battery EV is the concept is wrong. The future cannot depend on the EV. 1) we don’t have enough mining capability nor recycling capability to cope with all the batteries. 2) We don’t generate enough electricity - and have no hope of doing so without nuclear. Renewables provide energy when the sun is out or the wind blows strongly. Not nearly enough for cold dark winter evenings. The weak link about the EV is the batteries - I’m not saying it won’t work because at small scale it does. Hybrids (PHEVs) are good because they lower ICE emissions; but banning ICE before EV is mature is idiocy from the WEF. It cannot be done unless lifestyles become drastically energy reduced. Impoverished is a better word. This is why the adoption of EVs is like joining a religious cult; you need to believe in pseudoscience and rhetoric. The fact Tesla have really talented engineers doesn’t make those people able to bend the laws of physics!!

I can relate the ship fire to an incident, when a volunteer fire fighter. There was a propane tank fire at a large rural greenhouse, one large tank was ingulfed sitting next to two other large tanks. We were initially going to hose it down, and the captain called us of and told us we will let it burn itself out. to dangerous for firefighters in close proximity.
Electric vehicles seem to be very expensive to insure. Not my personal experience, just from comments I see with increasing regularity.

G'day John, rhere's a guy in the UK called PetrolPed. He's just done an EV tewing test. But I'm writing about the technology of the towing hitch and the caravan. The caravan was attached to a top spec BMW electric vehicle by a connection unlike any I've ever seen, and the caravan (Chichester Caravans UK) had the equivalent of its own stability control. which also picked up the BMW's settings? The guy claimed this could stop the dreaded weave. It's about halfway through the video so skip to that as I guess you don't need to be told the range was halved towing a 1.5 tonne van!
Hey John. How do you safely store your battery powered tools and toys?

Regardless of what forum I comment on regarding the various 'issues' with EVs, I am bombarded with absolutely ridiculous arguments (mainly deflection) from the EV zealots who are absolutely enraged by any criticism. I eventually have to bale out because of their stupidity......and I have a life to lead. I'm a retired aerospace engineer, no expert in batteries and electronics admittedly, but I used to teach risk management in my later years, and how these EVs got onto the consumer market baffles me.
Co2 was at an all time low prior to the Industrial revolution. In addition there has been no heat trend that can be tied to any Co2 measurements. The closest we can tell is that Heat comes about 10 years prior to an increase in Co2. (Co2 dissolves more into cold water than warm.) All raw data from NOAA and NASA are completely in agreement with my statements. In addition temperatures on earth are in a historic decline since 1930. As well we are no where near the historic high temperatures derived from indirect measurements for the past. Co2 levels are also No where near historic high measurements from prior to man (according to classic western view). Also 80% of Co2 emissions are emitted by China and they are doing nothing to curb this. any effort by the rest of the world is basically pointless if China doesnt also follow. pretty comical all told. The ridiculous Co2 Levels that the UN wants is so low all plant life would die. thats not a good idea at all.

This societal obsession with EV's looks to me similar to the littering blame game. Recycling of for example milk/soft drink bottles was passed from a corporate responsibility to the consumer and now the consumer is blamed for the problem. Anyway the other part of the tailpipe emission problem is as you have spoken about before - NOX and particulate pollution.. Have a good weekend

Hey J.C. do you know what the average level of CO2 in the last 600m years is? Try 3,000 ppm. About there. What level of CO2 do plants need to do photosynthesis before they die? Around 200 ppm. Where are we now? About 400 ppm. It has been in a straight line decline in the past 150 m years. If it gets much lower, crops will shrink fast. They pump CO@ into greenhouses to grown a lot of A grade crops. The more CO@ a plant has the less water it needs to perform photosynthesis. I am aware you are confident you are an expert in everything, 😂We breathe the oxygen plants produce. We are very close to mass extinction right now, if the plants die, so do we. No. That's incorrect.
The initial Dutch coastguard quote was "It’s carrying cars, 2,857, of which 25 are electrical cars, which made the fire even more difficult. It’s not easy to keep that kind of fire under control and even in such a vessel it’s not easy". Nobody actually knows which type of car started the fire and they did not say an EV started the fire either, the press said that. It may have been an EV, it may not. This figure has since been updated to 3,783 cars, including 498 EVs. An EV is the LEAST likely vehicle to catch fire per 100K miles driven, by a very large margin. Hybrids are the worst, then gas, then EV. The data on this is well known, freely available and collected by insurance companies. This trend should continue downwards as the battery chemistries change. That is why insurance companies are happy to insure them, they generally like to make a profit. If they were spontaneously combusting all the time, you would not be able to get insurance. Around 50% of Tesla's now being produced have no cobalt in the batteries as most manufacturers pivot to Lithium-Iron-Phosphate (LFP) chemistries which are not at all the same as the Lithium-Ion you find in your mobile phones and laptops. It does continue to be used in refining of gasoline however, which has always been the case. EV's require far less maintenance and servicing, including brake pads, which are the big income generators for dealers, so criticism, fact based or not, will continue to come from gas companies, the garage/servicing industry, mainstream press and even car companies themselves themselves that struggle to make any profit on EV's in competition with Tesla. This is not a rant, you can check all this data for yourself, it is all available, just calmly do your own research.

All cars are electrical. You obviously meant electric cars...... And yes, an EV is around 60 times *less* likely to catch fire.
A small radio control airplane burst into flames mid flight when I was playing with it, burned through all the controls in seconds crashed and burned quite vigorously. Wish I had someone shooting video its looked awesome.
I’m definitely not critical. I’ve become more aware of the fire risk with EVs over the last year or two. I live in an apartment block with an underground car park. I certainly don’t fancy sitting on top of an inferno. We’ve got a few EVs in there now. Might explain the hike in insurance premiums the last few years:(. They’ve got to come up with safer battery chemistries. The risk is pretty insane. Fires might be rare but that’s not much compensation when you’re staring at the pile of ashes which were once 80 flats.
