"You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" was John's attempt to tap into Bob Dylan, and I think it's a great attempt. It is my favorite song on the Help! album. The way John enunciates the word "HEY!" at the start of each chorus really punctuates the song and wakes the listener from a mellow daze. Pearl Jam did a decent cover of this song in the 1990s and I can see why they liked it so much. It's a great song that really shows what an amazing vocalist John was. I love how scratchy and hoarse John's voice sounds on Hide Your Love Away; it makes the singer sound vulnerable in that moment, laid bare and totally open. I especially love how he forcefully sings the line "How can she say to me..." as if he's having to fight to force out these pent-up emotions deep within himself, putting emphasis on the rhyming words "SHE" and "ME", mirroring the two: "How can SHE, say to ME!" It's brilliant stuff. The tambourine throughout gives the song a really cozy intimate feel. It's one of my all-time favorite Beatles songs.

“The Lord Of The Rings” and The Beatles almost went together. At one point, the lads from Liverpool were in talks with JRR Tolkien’s camp about making a movie musical based on the books (I hope they’d have done one movie per book, but I digress). Tolkien was NOT a fan of the idea, so it ended up not happening. But the roles that each Beatle would play is perfect: Paul as Frodo Baggins, Ringo as Samwise Gamgee, George as Gandalf, and John Lennon as the one and only Gollum.

@@CrystalShannon4 Here's something else you might find fun to know. At this point, the Beatles were coming out with separate albums for the American and British markets. Because the release dates were different, sometimes the Americans would get certain songs first while other times the British would get them first. For example, "Beatles VI" was released in America after Britain's "Beatles For Sale" but before Britain's "Help!" and featured some songs from Beatles for Sale (such as "Kansas City," and "Every Little Thing") and some songs from Help! (such as "You Like Me Too Much," and "Dizzy Miss Lizzy."), which meant American listeners actually heard the latter songs before the Brits. Another example of a tweener album is "Yesterday and Today," released in America after Britain's Rubber Soul and before Britain's Revolver but featuring songs from both, with Americans getting "Nowhere Man" and "What Goes On" many months after the Brits had heard them on Rubber Soul but also getting "I'm Only Sleeping, "And Your Bird Can Sing," and "Dr. Robert" months before they were released on Revolver in Britain. At the time, most people on either side of the pond had no way of obtaining imports, so people were stuck with whatever was released in their region and had no idea the songs had already been released elsewhere. All this leapfrogging stopped with Sgt. Pepper, with the Beatles albums released simultaneously on both sides of the pond with the same songs then and thereafter.

The Anthology TV series had just started airing and my parents recorded it onto VHS tape. I nearly wore it out I watched it so much, absorbing everything. I knew the early hits, but as soon as I heard some the songs from Help! I went to find the CD and I listened to the album over and over. It was the perfect Beatles LP to have as my first real listening experience. I knew it was also a movie, but I hadn't seen it, and I actually thought the album was a kind of song cycle/concept album that told the story of the movie in songs, haha. This was great, as always! I loved your little song at the end! You need to spend some time with good friends and talk about how you're feeling. You've probably done that already but it's always a good thing to help release some of the inner turmoil you're feeling. Love your analysis. You're very knowledgeable and articulate about music! Love to you! You're the best!

You've got to Hide your Love Away-John was inspired by Bob Dylan when he wrote this...you MUST watch the movie HELP....You will get chuckles out of the whole absurd thing, inept villains [religious cult and and scientists], chasing the Beatles all over, mysterious lady always helping them, sort of making fun of James Bond movies at the time, and ridiculous situations and inside jokes. When the lights go out in the "palace" they cut to a guy in the electric power station who exclaims to the other guy "The royal fuse has blown!" Double meaning there of course...I Need You George was using a new fangled floor pedal thing called a volume pedal to get that effect on the guitar sound. Sounds like there are some bongos in this song as well. This song's lyrics can apply to most any relationship, not just a break up...Ticket to Ride was a big hit single before HELP in Spring 1965, and was included the movie with an iconic video that is part of the movie. You can see that clip on you tube, probably a founding cornerstone of how to do music videos, if not intended. That clip really shows what the Beatles were about, during the Beatlemania touring years. They were the first band to preform in stadiums , no monitors or light shows, and they did this song in the Shea Stadium concert in August 1965, which you can also see online. another song from that era is "I'm Down", it rocks the stadium at the end. Side note:. I get the whole grief thing, been there done that....you're doing every thing right no matter how much it hurts. We are all here for you online and on your side if we are worth anything as a human being. ...I believe that being the toughest "sob" in the world is acknowledging your grief rather than trying to hide it, and tackling it head on like you are doing, just let it flow. Best way to fight it is let it come and go like you're doing. You own it, it's your grief, and no one has the right to tell you when to "Get over it." You're a champ!

Get the free ad-blocker for KZread, and you'll never have to watch ads again. Yes, You're Gonna Lose That Girl has a doo-wop chord progression and vocal harmonies. It's easily my favorite of all the songs in this video. My condolences on losing your father. Not to be flippant at all, but when you commented that you are dealing with your new reality, the line from Help! went through my head: "and now my life has changed in oh so many ways..."

As soon as I heard "Help", I wanted to hold you cause I felt the emotion, you did great though and I'm glad you brought it up because, as a dad, your like holding your hands out in case your baby falls taking her first steps and these are your first steps in this first year and you did brilliantly. I love this album, even though the movie didn't do so well, this was to me, some of the best music they did. Remember Crystal, were still here to support you just in case you need us in your baby steps of this year.

Happy New Year Crystal. Hang in there, things will get better over time. There's no schedule on this matter. I not only feel that Help is not just one of The Beatles most underrated albums but one of the more underrated in pop music history. Trust me on this kiddo I was alive in 65 and this was the perfect quintessential pop album of that year. Nobody sounded like this in those days. The next album just 5 months later in December, 1965 "Rubber Soul" was a whole different beast, these guys were traveling at light speed starting with Help in August 65. Starting with this album you can really start too hear the influence of marijuana on them, especially John's songs, it just became more mature overnight. Bob Dylan turned them onto reefer in August, 64 and after that they never looked back. Beginning with Beatles For Sale you can hear the Dylan and reefer influence on John with his tracks "No Reply" "I'm A Loser" and "I Don't Want To Spoil The Party" John said that the track "Help" was during his "Fat Elvis period" and was a true cry for help. He stated that he was eating and drinking like a pig and was feeling quite isolated and constricted by the whole Beatlemania thing and beginning to feel depressed. He said this song and "Nowhere Man" we're two if his favorite Beatles tracks because they were real, how he was feeling when he wrote them and were just as relevant for him in late 1980 as they were in 65 when he wrote them. John was still by far the dominant writer on this album and through "Rubber Soul" "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" is John doing Dylan and a great track. "Your Gonna Lose That Girl" highly underrated. Glad to hear you say "U Need You" was top three for you, I would put in my top 5 off of this record. How could you have worn out " Ticket To Ride" in a week? God only knows how many times I've listened to this song since 65 and I've never tired of it. The fade out on this song is really cool with Paul playing that little lead guitar where it goes Da Da, Da Da. Picture a huge steam locomotive barreling past you at a railroad crossing pulling a high speed passenger train and laying on the whistle. If Paul isn't mimicking a speeding train there then I'm crazy and I'm pretty sure I'm not quite there yet. ☮️✌️💕

Great album! Great movie too (you should see this film, if you haven't already)! By the way, A Ticket to Ride is also a great drumming/Ringo song. Ringo is so tasteful and playful with his fills on ATTR, using a variety of different accents and fills throughout the song. I love his playing (and the production/recording of the drums) on this album!

Happy new year, and lots of love and support to Crystal from a fan in Seattle. Here's a fun fact for you drummers out there. During the two breaks in The Night Before ("Last night is the night I will remember you by....") Ringo plays essentially the same calypso pattern that he played on I Feel Fine several months prior. AFAIK this is the only time he re-used this pattern on a Beatles record. It can be tricky to play well at speed, but of course Ringo makes it sound easy and really drives the song forward.
