Whenever I hear Taeyeon's "This Christmas" I always remember her live performance of the song while a small christmas tree was beside her. She had to continue her 3-day concert from December 22-24, 2017 even though she is still coping for her friend Jonghyun whom they bid farewell to on December 21🙏🏻. During her talk on the 3rd day, Taeyeon revealed that the tree was from a friend of hers who just went to a far place, and she received that tree last 2016 so she jokingly said that "Maybe this was his bribe to me so that I will accept his proposal to sing a duet song with him (Lonely)"

taeyeon's father passed away on her birthday last year :( he drove her to seoul and back home for vocal lessons when she was younger (more than 4 hrs round trip). she was in starlight academy that time (run by SM but not part of the system). his support helped taeyeon win a national singing competition (where she beat 10,000 other singers) which got her a trainee contract in SM. thank you papa kim :(

this christmas was actually released way back in 2017 but her dad passed away last year during her birthday and when she was actually supposed to release Her "Happy" single

This Christmas hits differently now 🤧 this was actually released when her father's still alive so it wasn't really a heartbreaking song for us (at that time) . 😢

I almost cried watching the “This Christmas” reaction. I knew it was before her father’s death. But somehow knowing her dad is no longer with her is making this MV even more heartbreaking...Those everyday life moments with her dad is so relatable that everyone may think of their own family members.

When she held her concert in December, there’s a small Christmas tree beside her, and she’s caressing it while she’s singing this song. And that Christmas Tree was a gift from SHINee’s Jonghyun 🥺 she’s missing his friend so much. Jonghyun is her “song boyfriend” that was they called each other 🥺🥺

Too many sad memories on this song, This Christmas 🥺 First, when she performed on her own Christmas concert in 2017, right after Jonghyun's death. And when her father passed away the same day aa her birthday in 2020. As you see, the mv portrays a father and daughter relationship. But that reasons aside, these two songs are both the best! 💙

Both songs were released on her Christmas mini and didn't have any special meaning at the time of the recording. Still, as I listen to these tracks now, I find it hard not to connect them to events that took place later in the future. Her dad being gone makes "This Christmas" MV such an emotional watch now. But also "I'm all ears" with its comforting lyrics felt so incredibly sad when the MV was released just a few weeks after Jonghyun's passing. It felt like a very important message that didn't reach the recipient in time. And Taeyeon voicing out the regret for not being there for him enough only made the connection stronger. There is one more ballad on that album called "Christmas Without You". It's probably one of my favorites on that mini but for a long time I could not make myself watch her live performance of it. When the mini was released, I already found the song sad with how SNSD went into hiatus and Tiffany moved to States just a couple month prior. It was already going to be a weird and a different end of the year. I was prepared for that. But I definitely wasn't prepared to see Taeyeon sing that song on Christmas just a couple days after the funeral with the Christmas tree he gave her and everything. I was honestly terrified. I didn't have to be. She proved to be a way stronger person than I imagined. But I wouldn't know that in advance, so I was afraid of what I would witness. It's really weird how all 3 ballads on the album have such a strong connection to real events for me. It's not a common occurrence at all. I can't think of any other song of hers that does something similar.

That is one of anxious moment i have since i become sone in 2008. There is so many things happen so many incident. There is so many shit our fandom went thru but i never was as scare as i was. We all cried and heartbroken when jessica left we all worried when sooyoung have car accident. Or getting angry and lost it when heard taeyeon almost got kidnapped or anxious when jessica faint during her musical. I rmmbr getting taeyeon car accident news while i was working and almost drop my tools n skip news just to make sure she alright. But the moment i heard tiffany left sm and went back to america i was getting so worried for taeyeon and how she going to get thru this. Then the terrible news come in and we all saw taeyeon break down at the funeral. That was when i was getting so anxious and worried to the point i rmmbr lay on bed after hard day at work feeling hopeless n worried if i wake up tomorrow on terrible news. Then when saw she perform this song with that tree. Gosh what a strong person.
