George Kamel is a personal finance expert and co-host of The Ramsey Show. Following Ramsey’s proven money plan, George went from negative net worth to a millionaire in under 10 years. George i agree with MOST of your takeaways and advice except for the multiple accounts for married folks. My husband and i have used this strategy. One shared account for bills, another foir saving goals and emergency fund, and we each have our own checking. My husband is not a personal finance nerd like. Its just makes our marriage better and peaceful, we dont argue about money this way

I’m with you here. We also have the joint accounts for our income and family spending. The separate accounts are our “allowance” accounts for pocket money and the odd birthday check from our moms.

The only reason people need fully combined finances is if there is a significant difference in incomes (like one partner works and one is home), or if you don’t trust your spouse to manage money the same way you do. My husband and I make similar income. We have a joint account and both have separate accounts too. We dont fight about money. We’re every day millionaires and just working on paying down the mortgage.

I was unloading my dryer and when you said “shout-out to my man Methuselah!” I actually busted out laughing. 😂 love the humor!
Separate accounts are wonderful that way if one person has a spending problem it is seen.. when the spending problem effects the spenders account it can be dealt with without risking other savings and living money.
I love George’s videos. Clever and informative. My favorite Ramsey personality 💯
“Shout out to my man Methuselah. Heck of a run” 😅😅😅😅😅
George is a breath of fresh air!
Joint accounts scare the crap out of me. My parents went joint and when they divorced (infidelity. Joint doesn’t prevent infidelity), it didn’t go final until 6 years later. They were fighting tooth and nail over the joint assets and joint accounts. Terrifying to think of following that by mingling my finances that much.

Sorry to hear about their situation. Truthfully, separate accounts doesn’t prevent the asset mess. The court will see those accounts as community property in a divorce.

Don't get married! You can be committed to someone without getting the government involved. The new marriage success rate is abysmal. I'm not going to bet a significant portion of my finances on the flip of a coin.

@@GeorgeKamel Exactly. When you are married, all accounts ARE joint accounts... (In some states, you don't even have to be married if you have been together long enough) And I never understood the "she doesn't have to ask you to spend money and you don't have to ask her" argument... My wife doesn't ask me if she wants to buy something using our joint account. I don't ask her. That said, all of this is "our money" so we obviously will talk about the big items... Together...

Yeah, don’t get married and reap none of the rewards that are possible from a long-term, loving relationship and family. Die miserable and alone, without posterity. Great advice. Sorry, as someone who got it wrong the first time (my husband cheated on me), I am now married to the love of my life, for the rest of my life. A great marriage is worth the risk.

@@desiv1170 This 100%. A relationship with separate accounts and zero transparency is not a relationship I want to be in, and where I live, after 2 years you're considered to be in a de facto relationship anyway. And yep, our marrige is built on trust, we just discuss the bigger ticket items together. It's really not that hard if you are able to communicate with each other.

Please George, don't leave me hanging‼️ I remember when you all played that Family Feud clip on the Ramsey Show. Dave said y'all were going to try and find that guy and get him hooked up into FPU. Were you successful in finding him? I felt so bad for that guy.
My wife and I actually do the 4 bank account method. The separate accounts are very small and part of our monthly budget. Like about 100 bucks a month going in small. This is how I buy surprise anniversary gifts with out her knowing. Hence the word surprise. Also serves as a back up debit card in case our main joint account card gets compromised, which we are currently dealing with.

My plan, we have the same 4 accounts Steve mentioned. Our paychecks are deposited into the central account. From there we each deposit our spending allowance and investment funds into the applicable accounts. We both have full access and control to ALL accounts and once a month we meet to balance and review the central account. For me, it just makes life a little bit easier. It's already a pain to track groceries, light bills, phone bills etc. I don't want to be bothered with tracking how much my wife spent on a pair of pants. Besides, as long as communication is happening what's the difference whether it's a separate account or a line item in the budget?
@punkbassandcovers
Жыл бұрын
It's not the four accounts that is concerning. Sure put the set aside budgeted spending money into a separate spending account if that's your thing. It's where Steve at 1:35 ish literally says do whatever you want and don't even check what your spouse is doing with the money. As George said, it's the lack of visibility of where the money is going. Communicating with your spouse on these things (such as money) is a must.
@kaycon4823

@@punkbassandcovers So would you give your spouse $100 gift and then insist that they report exactly how to you exactly how spend that money or would you saying I am giving this money, spend it how you like? This is basically the same thing. It is not like they did not have a joint account and decided together how to spend that money BEFORE allocating money to the separate account. I do believe that couples should be able to access all accounts, but this is micro-managing and controlling. As far as financial infidelity or cheating, that is a character flaw. A person who cheats will find a way even without separate account. At one time I had my check go split so it went into two separate banks. I was not married, but if a person wanted to cheat this is a way to have a certain amount go into the main account in the first place. I am sure there are other ways to cheat if a person has that character.
Awesome advice 👏 👍I Managed to pay off my $300,000 mortgage. And fully paid off my vehicles before turning 40... now at 41 I wish finding a spouse was easier 😅

In a marriage there is no singular independence. If you're too selfish and self centered to truly partner with someone on that level that make you "one", probably shouldn't bother getting married. How do I know this? I'm married. And we're so much stronger together as a independent "couple" vs singular independence. When you can trust someone and work with them on that level, you will have a happy marriage.
George keep it up absolute gold

So happy you spoke to this! Steve Harvey has been giving bad and unreasonable advice about money and marriage for years… and mainly because he’s famous and funny people buy it. Except people forget that he cheated on his wife, is divorced and makes millions and his advice is based off of that. Not quite the path I want to follow. Excellent video George ❤😂
People become millionaires faster with businesses than in the market. 5 years.. bam done. Find something that you can be proficient at and focus on that leaving everything behind. Yes it takes tons of discipline but works almost everytime.
🤔 Over twenty years ago my cousin made over 100,000 with a lawn mowing business he worked part time on Friday and Saturday after working 40 hours as an engineer.
We share the bank accounts. In our monthly budget, we each have a spending budget that we can do what we want with (go eat out with friends, buy a new purse, whatever). We both know the Master password, and if we need to spend more than $100 we talk to each other first. No secrets, no guesswork. I have more freedom now then ever in my life ❤
OMG! This had me rolling, Harvey said so many dumb things! I guarantee he did not become rich by doing any of those things.
Nice video bro thanks

The 1st point: my husband and I have had basically that bank account set up for years, but all under the same login, so we have always been able to see the other person's "separate" checking account/transactions. In later years, I added a couple more accounts for 'giving' and 'travel,' but another option is there are bank accounts that let you divvy things into 'buckets' under the same account.
Steve and George are right to encourage generosity. Make it a habit.
We have one account and share everything. We have the money market account for our Emergency fund. Strength in being together. We budget a line item for each of us for extra spending
OP what?????? Great show George ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
George, you're killing it! Thank you for simplifying this so we could ALL understand and be successful.
I agree with Steve because couples get in trouble with overseeing every penny the other spends. There should be some amount of money where you don’t need the other’s approval. Either put into an account or actual cash distribution. Get the savings/retirement goals in place, monthly obligations and any other goals FIRST.
We use Ally, which you’ve said you’re a fan of. We actually have five accounts, one is the main account for daily spending, one is our monthly bills that are all set to autopay, one is the emergency fund savings account and two of them are his/her “fun monies” accounts. We budget weekly and only our own fun money (which are line items in EveryDollar) go to those separate accounts. In Ally we can both See the Main, Bills, and Emergency. The two fun accounts are linked but can’t be seen by each other. With EveryDollar you can see all of these separate accounts for budget meeting discussions. Why polarize what he’s saying. There’s plenty of tools out there that achieve the same goal.
I agree with you up to your analysis of Steve's asserted "The Law of Attraction" nonsense. This is purely a new age principle of personally controlling the universe for personal gain xx

To avoid the 4 bank accounts my husband and I just take out cash. So we agree to x amount of dollars per month that is “fun money” and take cash out so he can use his to buy his baseball tickets and I can use mine to save for my purses without each other judging each other.

I tell young people to find the bank that works for them when they ask where and how I do it. Too any factors to determine it.
We follow both. Both names are on all 4 accounts and we budget every penny. It's just what's in my account is there so it's easier to set aside what we budgeted for her to spend and budget for me to spend. Bank accounts are free and banks don't care how many you have open as long as you maintain the minimums.
That’s good he learned that he’s throwing away money by borrowing from banks. But this interest you pay is just half the issue… When you have no debt you can invest more, accrue wealth faster, plus just the mental health factor of having no debt just gives you so much of an edge
