This was totally missed by the watching public when it was first released, and it was only really saved from total obscurity by the fact the second series was already commissioned. Series 2 caught some more watchers when it came out and they decided to show series 1 again and play it all in order. They had no budget, and the cast were a long way away from being well known then, but they all became stars. It's totally fantastic and you're going to love it.

Something the show doesn't convey, but the novels do. Lister was using his job on Red Dwarf as a free ride from the outer solar system back to Earth. By the start of the episode he is sick of the work, sick of bunking with Rimmer and comes up with a plan to get put in stasis by committing a petty crime just bad enough to qualify for punishment by stasis. He made sure the cat was healthy and vaccinated. He though he would be arrested quickly once the ships sensors detected a non-human lifeform. When nothing happened for a while, then Lister took the photograph and sent it in to be developed.

Red Dwarf is the name of the ship. A Red Dwarf is a type of star, like the sun. The ship is an old mining ship that mines for ore on the outer planets then ships the materials to Earth. The trip takes years. The main cast are two low level employees on the ship.

  • @paulwalsh2344

    @paulwalsh2344

Yeah Red Dwarf not only transports mined minerals though... You see in the long shot in the intro that there seems to be a rocky protuberance on the bottom of the ship ?... well that is an actual asteroid that the ship is cannibalizing on it's journey between the outer planets (as alluded to in Lister's seemingly throwaway song at the beginning of the episode "Ganymede to Titan, you know I've been around." So.. the Red Dwarf is a mining ship that mines as it goes and it's so big that it also has manufacturing facilities on board to so that not only are mineral resources delivered to the moons of the outer solar system, but finished products as well to aid in the colonization of these minor worlds. I mean the guys, Rob Grant and Doug Naylor really put a lot of thought into the world building for this show's premise ! And that also answers one of the questions Megan had about where Cat got the material for his suit... Red Dwarf, being a truly colossal ship has vast stores of goods manufactured from each moon to deliver to the next AND it has facilities to manufacture goods from the materials it is constantly mining during it's journey for the years long trip it cycles through the solar system.

I remember seeing the trailer for this and being - as a sci-fi nerd - kind of intrigued. So I was glad to get into it from the start. It's a real slow build, like a lot of British sitcoms now considered classics. And of course there are a lot of British sitcoms that are basically about the interaction between two people (usually, but not always guys). These early episodes also have a flavour of 'Porridge', what with their enforced imprisonment together on the ship. And a Red Dwarf is a real thing, sort of. A small red sun, low on energy.

Red Dwarf is great. Like a lot of long-running comedies It takes the writer's and actor's a few seasons to refine and flesh out the characters. I think season 3 is when everything starts really coming together, and season 4 is when it hits its stride. There's plenty to like in the early seasons, lot's of world building and character development between the laughs.

Wow ! This is a show that starts off mildly good, gets better, and better, becomes truly superb, then compulsive viewing, before ending up legendary. This is one rabbit hole you won't escape from. Venomous humour where the main characters, utter side splitting one liners and plot twists. Always delivers, never disappoints. Ground breaking for its time, nothing before or after has attempted these story lines. Mind gets blown. Has a huge fan base. Almost cult status. Might be my second, all time favourite comedy. What is first ? The Goodies starting Tim Brooke -Taylor, Graeme Garden and Bill Oddie. Ran for 12 years. Best slap stick comedy. The only British comedy which was asked to tone down the constant laughs, after a man died from watching it !!

It starts out as "The Odd Couple, but in space" and gradually morphs, over the seasons, into "Star Trek, but ridiculous." [In fact there's even some tropes and conceits people think of as "star trek" ideas or whatever that actually come from Red Dwarf first, that's how old, and how good, this is.] It's clever and unique high-concept science fiction can measure up to any serious sci-fi drama, especially for its time. It's character comedy is funnier than most sitcoms. At it's high points, Red Dwarf is clicking on both fronts and there's just nothing else like it. Keep up with this one.

Also I'm pretty sure what I described about the Red Dwarf's mission was detail in one of the first two Red Dwarf novels which I read. though I can't go and prove it right now because I lost the books decades ago. The first 2 series are a little (and occasionally a lot) rough around the edges, but when you hit 3 (and I thoroughly recommend it) it really picks up. As a life long fan (yes, I remember the original transmission, I AM that old) I enjoy watching people experiencing anything I've loved for their first time, as I can never get that back. (Be it TV, film, books, etc) 😁

WoohOO!! Red Dwarf! It's so cool seeing people watch this episode totally blind, as hardly anyone caught it in the UK, so everyone saw it spoiled. Even with the internet, hardly anyone does reaction videos about it, so this is only the second good reaction video I've seen of it... and it was a joy! Thanks. I'm looking forward to more. It's not a series which sits still and I can't wait to see what you think of the revelations and plot twists to come!

I watched this now and realized I had seen it before. I don't know if I mentioned it but I found it to be snicker-worthy that she corrected herself from not knowing that this was set in space, and realized afterwards "Red Dwarf" was the name of the spaceship. Correcting herself from not knowing... to technically be correct yet still not getting it.. But I think my mirth is overtaken by what of an indictment the entire thing is when it comes to the school system that she isn't aware that a "Red dwarf" is the name of a specific type of sun... (or was it a "stage" of a specific type of sun's "life"? My memory isn't what it used to be).. Don't they have physics classes where she lives?

Let me be the 221st to inform you; a red dwarf (in context of astronomy) is a class of star characterized by its hue and its dimness relative to other stars. I believe the showrunners' joke is that these particular lovable, sad-act shipmates make life for one another less than stellar.

Actually, while I agree series 2 is when it picks up, I'd say the very next episode in this series 'Future Echoes', is up there with the best there is. The others aren't bad, either. Just saying in case Megan is worried there will be a slog before she reaches the good stuff. It's just a case of things improving... FE being the exception as that episode has it all pretty much!

In the book, George commited suicide to avoid his debt to the mafia on Ganymede. They also skipped Holly telling Lister that, after three million years, he's probably the last and only human being in the universe. Holly brings Rimmer back as a hologram so Lister won't go batshiz crazy. Needless to say, the comedy is a little bit darker in written form.

The first season is a bit claustrophobic, but the basic premise is funny. Its sort of "Odd Couple" but instead of sharing an apartment, theyre stuck in a spaceship 😂😂 Once it started to become successful, they increased the cast and got more adventurous with the storylines and it became a classic comedy show

My favourite series of all time, never mind sitcom, or British. Honestly your fans picked well. It crowd is great, but even bad red dwarf is good, it gets better every season n for most people peaks at series 5 or 6 (5 for me) Love watching these reactions as I've watched them all so many times it's good to get a fresh take. Series 1 and 2 aren't as entertaining as later episodes on a rewatch.

Red dwarfs are stars with very low mass and very low luminosity, as compared to the Sun. They make up 70% of all stars and their lifespans range from one to ten trillion years.

Love Red Dwarf, I remember a Red Dwarf celebration type show with a selection of interviews with various notaries including Sir Patrick Stewart who said how Red Dwarf was showing as he was making Star Trek TNG, but before it was released, and he was about to call his agent thinking it was a rip off series, until he started laughing and realised it was a parody of Sci-Fi space shows which take themselves too seriously.😋 If you get the chance read the books, it becomes clear just how well Red Dwarf is written and avoids the barrier of dated production values. Hilarious.

The most random thing of all is that they're still intermittently making this show - occasionally - knowing that there's a built-in cult audience for it. And in the US, where they attempted an ill-advised remake.

Love Red Dwarf, been a fan from the books and then the show came out. watch all the seasons. the last 5 season have a gap of 10-15yrs in production. the good thing with the gap is they had a much larger budget and CGI tec is way cooler.

The milk scene you talked about... Look for something called _The Smeg Outs_ and _The Smeg Ups_ (outtakes) or listen to the cast commentary audio track. You'll learn that Craig Charles was getting tired of reshooting that scene over and over again because the cat just wouldn't cooperate. It got to the point where they were in a hurry because it was the end of the day and having to reset the set each time was getting tedious.

Even though it may not seem like it from the first episode, Red Dwarf is a great series. Twelve series (seasons) and a movie, starting in 1988 to 2020, I got hooked on it when it aired on my local PBS station in the early 90's. It pays around with many sci-fi tropes. One of the many that they tried to make an American version of but it never got past the pilot stage.
