Honestly, your humility and attitude get me everytime. Not "give them another shot" or "maybe they have changed" but "maybe I have matured". Them not being your cup of tea is perfectly mine, they aren't mine either. Being german and getting the lyrics a bit more they are still great in a way, just not something I'd listen to often. But the way you approach music as art in this series is just fascinating to me on a personal level. Big props, keep it up, you are doing great. PS: Your german pronounciation is ace for not speaking it at all.

@@ChaseCarneson Rammstein isn't my cup of tea either -- except in the gym. The mid-tempo, user-friendly aggression is perfect for getting into the weight-lifting groove (and the repetitiveness becomes a good thing). That masochistic hardcore workout mood ("pain is weakness leaving the body 😠") doesn't come naturally to me, and Rammstein's melodramatic agony definitely helps. I suspect that Rammstein is all about the vibe - if you find a way that it resonates with you, then you're happy with them just sitting in one spot, because it's a good spot. Otherwise, there's not a whole lot there. Or if there is, then I haven't found it yet.

Rammstein definitely keep it quite simple with their structures, although every album has it's interesting few variations. Me being German, I can truly see them getting maybe a bit repetitive for non-german-speakers, especially those who look for a story being told through music, because Rammstein musically essentially create the same feeling with almost every song, at least off one album. The lyrics are where they really hook the listener, not in a catchy kind of way, but rather for their extreme uniqueness. Till Lindemann writes in really kind of old-fashioned German, a way nobody really speaks like anymore. This, paired with the oftentimes absolutely horrid depravedness of the subjects they sing about makes for a sort of theatre-like experience, even without the visual component. It sometimes makes me sad that others can't experience their music the way Germans do, because even with translated lyrics, that element doesn't properly come off.

I still don't really 'get' Rammstein, but I love them! The Mutter album (2001) has so many classics that define their sound; Mein Herz Brennt, Feuer Frei, Links 2 3 4, Sonne, and the title track Mutter, but that's more of a ballad (you mentioned Ich Will which is on there too). All great picks for easy songs to get used to them. No matter which song you pick though, their lyrics are usually pretty dark/complex/controversial...

Some more Rammstein-Suggestions: "Sonne" (Live Rock im Park / Rammstein Official) --> Hot as the name giving sun (Sonne = Sun) "Ich tu Dir weh" (Hurricane Festival / Rammstein Official) --> Great singing and insane stage action towards the end) "Mein Teil" (Live Hurricane Festival 2013) --> Read the story behind the song (a real case of cannibalism!) first. "Benzin" (Madison Square Garden) --> Benzin = Gasoline --> burns well. And maybe also a man? There is one song which you have to see as video clip: "Deutschland" This video is beyond everything from it's production quality and also from it's content: It's about the dark side of the German history going back to medieval times. There is so much happening, that is is even for a German difficult to get everything. You should have the lyrics with you, especially when it comes to the concentration camp scenes. I suggest also to loog for an English analysis of whats happening there ahead to the song.

I'm my opinion Rammstein are built around and are entirely designed for big concert shows. Arena Industrial. Simple, hard hitting chords. They are showmen to the highest order. You can feel the music when you are there. I didn't truly get them until I got to go to a live show. Tier is a fantastic song. Honestly, they have so many. I think Director's Cut refers to the effects put over the footage, like the black smoke effect on Till's face when he screams. My favourite live performance for Till actually singing and variety during the song is Ich Tu Dir Weh. Favourite for story telling and pyro is Mein Teil. Their songs do have a deliberate, industrial, almost monotonous rhythm to them which I think is all part of being what's sometimes referred to as dance metal / tanzmetal?. Another to listen to, though you'll never get a reaction video of it to stay online long, is their official video for Deutschland. It's absolutely epic in every sense and has about 150 million views. Well worth ten minutes of your time to just enjoy it.

Is it weirdif I say that your reactions are really charming? Because I think it is one of your many good points. This almost childlike fascination is really gripping. I'm also German and I love Rammstein since I've been a kid. Never had the money to get to one of their concerts and I hate it so much. This song is really one of their most repetitive songs and not one I like very much. I would recommend 'Sonne' because in this Tills vocals shine! I would really like to see your reaction to it, better the official video, there is no fireworks but it's still really worth watching it. Keep up the very good work and thank you for the explanation in what is going on in the technical way.

A Rammstein show is one of the single most unique experiences I've ever had. Don't get me wrong, I love their music, but it's the absolute spectacle of their concerts that's so captivating. I mean, the show I went to involved them coming onto stage through the general admission area, wearing hooded cloaks and carrying torches. A ~6 foot long penis cannon that sprayed foam into the crowd. More pyro than I've seen at an outdoor show, much less indoors. The entire band crawling across a metal gangplank-type thing from the main stage to a smaller stage that was set up in the middle of gen admission, where they performed a sort of mini-concert before going back over to the main stage, all while decked out in BDSM gear. It's bizarre, incredible, shocking, awe-inspiring, and epic, all at the same time. Also, this isn't one of my favorites by them. I think it's a bit too repetitious for my tastes. Feuer Frei, Deutschland, Sonne, Engel, and Ich Tu Dir Weh are all good choices, or Ohne Dich, if you want something a little softer and more melodic. Love the reaction and the channel! Keep it up!

You should go to their concert and hear and feel the song Sonne (sun). I got it at the Schalke Arena in Germany. The roof was open, it was 12 degrees and there are high towers with fire around us, so the temperature on our skins changes from 12 degrees to 60 degrees in a quick succession during the song. It was so amazing, that i can feel the fire right now, while i was writing this down. YOU HAVE TO FEEL THE MUSIC LIVE!

One of the biggest reasons they are so hard to approach musically, is that, while they are labeled generally as a metal band, they came from the original industrial scene. Which is why its simplistic, and repetitive, while maintaining a very serious harshness. This is from their first album. I'd recommend, Du Rieschst So Gut (my favorite) Mein Teil and Mein Herz Brennt.

You have to consider that this was a song from the first album "Herzeleid", from 1994 and just like "Du riechst so gut" (My fav and from the same album) it still holds up on live performances today. Still the power guitar is one of the features of Rammstein. I don´t think a song of theirs would be quite the same without it. :) About the pyros. There have been mishaps on their shows. No one has been seriously injured luckly. Also, check out the Live aus Berlin or Hellfest Du riechst so gut live performance. You´d be surprise about the pyro in the beginning. :)

Rammstein in person and on Video are different.... I'm not sure how to put it across, i'm a casual fan at best of them but they are by a distance the live best band i've ever seen, it's a show and while teh fireworks and stage show add too it, there's just something primal about the groove they play, it draws you in.

Hi, long time rather ancient fan here (80 in Nov) and while "Bett" is a great song, and back at their origin Richard said they'd play "dull, heavy boring music", they do get some great textures in their ballads, Try an early one, "Feuer und Wasser" (I don't think there's a video) to hear Till actually sing. For one with video, and still in their playlist, try "Heirate Mich" a spooky song about a man who goes insane after his wife dies. The title means "Marry me". Till writes the lyrics and often takes inspiration from news articles. FYI, Till has a pyrotechnician's license after a flaming prop (not firework) fell into the audience many years ago. He does get burned now and then as they often perform with little shirt on. And their new hit "Deutschland" is a different thing than before. Any blood on Till is real. Yes, all a bit nuts! Powerful!

In 2001 I went to a Rammstein concert in Freiburg (Germany) and ended up 2 row to the barrier. About three songs in a checked if my eyebrows were still there because so much pyrotechnic effects had been gone off until this point that I had to make sure. Also the support band was Clawfinger! Needles to say that I was already done before Rammstein had played a single note. :-D

Its so good to understand everything as a native German speaker. I love Rammstein ! Here are the lyrics in german and english. german: Wollt Ihr das Bett in Flammen sehen? Ja English: ( in this case „you“ means the second Personal pronoun plural) Do you want to see the bed on fire (in German they say „in flames“ Same meaning) Do you want to perish into your skin and hair? You also want to put the dagger in the sheet You also want to lick the blood from your epee Rammstein (2) You can see the crosses on the pillow You mean the innocence can kiss you You think killing would be difficult But where do all the dead come from? Rammstein(3) Sex is a battle love is war(4x) Do you want to see the bed on fire? Do you want to perish into your skin and hair You also want to put the dagger in the sheet You also want to lick the blood from your epee Rammstein... Yes

A couple things to add: the video you watched is part of their “Live in Paris” album. It’s part of a concert film, which is why there is post production and lots of cuts As well, the weird high pitched sound from the end of the vocal phrase (and the shotgun cocking in the bridge) are from the original Doom game

There is an ancient tradition in all nordic cultures in Europe (perhaps not Finland, mind) where the oldest form of poetry is the "Stabreim" (don't know the English name for it). It's less like modern poetry where the ending words have to rhyme - they composed in "sound effects" instead. One of the main forms is forming lines of similar sounding, mostly dark vowels and similar sounding consonants within the line. Like in "Düster drohen dunkle Wolken ..." when done well, it has an almost hypnotic effect. The original Illiad is done in a similar fashion (though, obviously, not a nordic poem). There are modern "Viking" or "Nordic" bands that perform this type of music. Rammstein often uses this technique to show off Till's dark voice, which accentuates this. English and German pronunciation varies a lot but you may know enough Dutch to spot what they are doing when you look at the lyrics and listen to the cadence. To make this work, Till's pronunciation HAS to be as clear as you noted - the effect would be lost if he'd slur things.

You are right that he is very clear in his articulation. His whole pronounciation/voice is definitely very theatrical which needed to be very clear back then so people in theatres could understand it. It is also definitely quite a bit different from his speaking and voice in interviews so it most definitely is done deliberately. It works really well for me.

You really might enjoy 'Sonne', 'Mutter', or 'Mein Hertz Brennt' more musically, to name a few. And yeah, they know what they're doing when it comes to pyros, they and their team could probably safely equip any Hollywood action movie. :D There have been some accidents because those can happen to anyone, but not since '96 I believe.
