Just an FYI about the movie: While it was great in-that it re-introduced Freddie & Queen’s music to a new generation of music lovers… Detail-wise, it’s FULL of inaccuracies: Events were moved around in timelines, and (maybe to "keep viewers engaged"?) …situations were created that never happened, like: Freddie never left the band/they never broke up/he never had to come back begging forgiveness before Live Aid (That was a WEIRD one!😆)… they were touring together just a few months prior. The BIGGEST inaccuracy though: There was NEVER any tear-jerking scene before Live Aid where Fred tells his band mates he has AIDS as if that performance was their Swan Song. The following year (1986) they did a HUGE stadium tour, inc. being the first Western music band to play behind the Iron Curtain. Fred wasn’t finally officially diagnosed w AIDS until 1987; he recorded an album of OPERA after that, and Queen recorded material for two more albums (my two FAV albums, actually) before he passed away in 1991. (WEIRD side note: Fred passed away EXACTLY 10 years to-the-day after this show/performance that you reacted to here... This show was on Nov 24, 1981; he passed away Nov 24, 1991.) There are some really GOOD documentaries for free on YT that are well worth watching, that give an objective accurate depiction of the band and Freddie’s career and of Fred biographically. (And even though Rami Malek did an admirable job portraying Freddie in the movie, their re-creation of Live Aid is NOOOO WHERE as good as the original. When I watch the film, I actually turn it off just before the Live Aid segment… and watch the ORIGINAL Live Aid instead!😄)

Sadly, that movie was not a true reflection of Freddie Mercury...if you’re interested there’s a lot of interviews with Freddie on KZread...look at some of Peter Freestone’s videos..but Hollywood doesn’t tell the truth...as they say “don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story”

Wasn't Sacha Baron Cohen supposed to be Freddie Mercury? I heard he wanted to do some really wild shit and they were like no thanks, we need this to be a little more watered down.

@@breakdownlounge9541 Yes, Sasha was supposed to do it originally… Sasha’s “version” of explaining why he was let go from the project was to say that they wanted to “water down” Freddie’s wild partying etc. It seems to me that Sasha was interested in making it more like a sensational exposé… and given that Sasha never knew Fred personally - whereas Brian May & Roger Taylor did - I think they made the right choice. I’ve watched/read so MANY interviews by people who knew/met/were acquainted with Fred, and the overall “message” one comes away with is that - while, yes, he was of course an imperfect person like all of us/he did go through a wild & crazy phase… that’s just one aspect of a much more complicated person/story. (For instance: Did you know that Fred "couldn't really read sheet music"?!? Those were his words... he took piano from age 8 to 12, then quit. But, his musical peers all say that his piano playing style was like Liberace's! Aside from the piano lessons, he was completely self taught in everything else.) ANYWAY... if you watch any of Freddie’s own interviews and/or documentaries/interviews about him, you can’t help but come away with the impression of a really kind/caring/giving - bizarrely HUMBLE - person who left an indelible mark on those close to him.

Absolutely agreed. Like everybody else here I love Freddie with all his qualities and abilities, and I think he must have been a very fine human being. I think Sasha wanted to portray Freddie in all his facets, including his activities in the gay scene, wild parties and drugs, even if some fans might like to ignore that. May and Taylor, on the other hand, wanted a feel-good film. In this respect, they actually made the right choice with the leading actor. The "selling out" of Freddie, which has been going on for years by certain people without Freddie being able to defend himself against it, has pissed me off for a long time, but that's another topic.

I liked the movie Bohemian Rhapsody but it's important that you realize it was not a documentary. Yes, much of the stuff in the movie did happen but the timeline is off and the characters have been dramatized and things changed for entertainment purposes. You will find many long time Queen fans did not like the way they changed the timeline or how they portrayed Freddie. I did not know much about Queen when I saw it which is probably why I liked it so much. I think it did what it was designed to do. It initiated a new generation of Queen fans. For me personally, it made me somewhat obsessed with them. I have watched everything I could find on them and become a huge fan. I absolutely love them. If you want to see a good documentary, check out "Queen BBc Documentary" for free on youtube which is essentially the entirety of the Days Of Our Lives documentary that everyone recommends but youtube wants people to buy or rent. You asked where Freddie was with his illness when this performance happened. Freddie had various mild symptoms in the early-mid 1980's but he was not diagnosed until 1987 which was when his health really started to decline and he began getting treatment. He had a tremendous amount of energy and stamina. If you have not seen much of their live performances, you are missing out! I would encourage you to watch as many as you can. We are lucky to have many available on youtube. The more you watch, the bigger fans you will become. If you watch the performances in order beginning with 1974 live at the Rainbow(Stone Cold Crazy, Liar, Keep Yourself Alive) ; 1975 live at Hammersmith Odeon(White Queen); 1981 live in Montreal(Dragon Attack); 1985 Live in Rio(Love of My Life), 1985 Live Aid(full 20min set in it's entirety), 1986 live at Wembley-Saturday(One Vision, Under Pressure, Another One Bites the Dust, Now I'm Here, Love of My Life, or full concert if you have time); 1986 live in Budapest (Who Wants To Live Forever), then videos made after 1986 (The Great Pretender, Barcelona, Breakthrough, Headlong, etc. ending with These Are The Days of Our Lives official video where he essentially says goodbye to his fans. You will see and hear Freddie's illness progress. He maintained fantastic vocals through the end of his life but his voice did change noticeably and his appearance changed dramatically. The story of Queen is fascinating. It's a great journey. They do not disappoint!

This is so strange / new perspective... You're watching ORIGINAL work and it's reminding you of secondary artist performances (the 2018 movie and actor performances, Taylor Hawkins (a die hard Queen fan professional drummer 'top shelf').... it's so backwards but being positive.... commend you for the correlations. About the song and this specific performance .... I love the intro with that first powerful LOVE followed by 'okay let's do it' wasn't even part of the song it was just segue ramp up intro.... (splendid) and.... near then end Freddie has Roger take over LEAD vocals so Freddie can play around. Each performance being individual makes me wonder if he just decides what to do in the moment or if they rehearsed it with those unique bells and whistles.

I was a Queen fan from the beginning and remember watching Live Aid live on TV. My husband and I actually went to see Flash Gordon BECAUSE Queen did the music scoring. I have not been able to watch the BR movie because I knew them and their music. Like other say, find some of the really truthful videos here on YT done by those who knew them and Freddy and/or worked with them. Hollywood is notorious for making up their stories from whole cloth. By the way, Rick Beato did a "What Makes This Song Great" Bohemian Rhapsody in which he interviews Brian May. There is also a long video on YT re BR making and Brian May goes into detail of how Freddy made it.

If you want a good Queen documentary watch Days of Our Lives. It is on YT free in 2 parts. What you saw in the theatre was a Hollywood movie with a lot of situations that were changed, or happened at a different time, or didn't happen at all. Freddie's character was also different in the movie. Freddie was always laughing and positive in real life according to his roadie and friends and assistant. Peter "Ratty" Hince who was Freddie and John's roadie said the movie didn't portray how kind and funny Freddie was. You would do better to read his book Queen Unseen. Somebody To Love was from the 1976 album Day at the Races. The studio version sounds like a gospel choir with the three vocalists overdubbing themselves. It's great but I love this live version. Save Me and Dragon Attack from this concert are excellent. Fat Bottomed Girls live from Milton Keynes 1982 is fantastic. For some of Roger Taylor's beautiful backing vocals In the Lap of the Gods Live from the Rainbow 1974 or lead vocal in I'm In Love With My Car from this concert. Thanks for reacting to Queen.

While it's true that on their first few albums Queen had some songs that could be considered Prog Rock (most notably, the Prophet's Song), they were never truly a prog rock band. Firstly, their songs didn't really include the several-minutes -long indulgent instrumental interludes that characterized prog rock. Secondly, although some of their songs were undoubtedly relatively long and complex arrangements, they were typically composed of catchier melodies that were had more of a popular appeal, Bohemian Rhapsody being the prime example ( but same goes for March of the black queen, millionaire Waltz etc)
