I can't relate to Hoodinkee or Fratello I don't love the fact they define the hobby and what collectors should look like to the eyes of classic big medias and a ton of new hobbyists. I've been in the lapidary and jewel trade since I'm born from when pocket watches were the only thing snubs considered worthy of collecting and I'm glad this stuffy period of watch collecting has ended, seems like Hoodinks want to bring that back en force with the wristwatches. Don't count me in.

If you are sponsored by one watchmaker though, AP is quite a good one to only wear. They kinda have the biggest sports watch of all, obivously I mean the Royal Oak, so you have your sporty everyday watch. There's even quartz versions for when you ride a motorbike or anything... And they have all the vintage grand complications and classy dresswatches one might ever need.

In my opinion, for ‘marketing’ to be able to allure people towards a certain product, it has to have a compelling storytelling narrative. THIS is how you cultivate authentic desire for a person to be associated with a particular thing. Remove all sterility. Make it a natural inclination for people to get behind the story you’re proposing…. with ‘the product’ being an article that just seems to obviously makes sense to have as an accompanying piece of that associated lifestyle

I'm glad he said that he wears and likes other watches and I think that path is better for him and for AP. The optics of having a brand ambassador who is passionate about watches even outside of your brand are way better than the optics of having a brand ambassador who is disingenuously pretending that your watch is the only watch and acting like they are constantly under duress. I'm sure that there is more nuance to it than that, but in my totally uneducated and irrelevant opinion, the honesty about the watches he wears and likes was one of the better parts of the interview and reflects really well on AP.

Hodinkee is just becoming worse day by day and somehow Ben is just sitting there watching it. Ever since Steven, Cara, Jon, Jack, have left they have only gone downwards. The only person left who brings a modicum of respectability now there is James Stacey, and I can't wait for him to leave Hodinkee if this is how Hodinkee plans to continue.

Had to pause: Kevin Hart did blow it and so did Hondinkee, I’ve been asking for Kevin to get in-front of the camera and talk about watches for almost a decade now. He acted just how I expected, sort of dismissive, gate-keeping, stand-offish. Honestly, I don’t ever want to hear about Kevin’s watch collection again, because that interview was underwhelming. He has a banging ass collection, but he seems far removed from the “watch world” “watch guy” crowd.

I'm pretty sure that the people at AP know KH has other watches, and they're probably not too concerned about him talking about them in a Hodinkee video. Because they know the people that are dropping 6 figures on APs are likely NOT watching Hodinkee. The ones that are watching Hodinkee, they know, will be aware of AP as well as other brands anywayz. 😊

This is a real watch nerds take: Clooney and Beckham etc are in fact much more relatable to the majority of watch consumers as authentic cool guys who just like a nice watch to complement their style. Kevin Hart is a great comedian but is not known for style. Celeb watch nerd-ery certainly has helped grow the broader market, but most people only have a certain appetite for it.

He was just further proving that he’s a watch guy by admitting that it’s painful to only wear his prized collection around the house, and the contractual obligation is no secret. 3. That abrupt ending was either because or to suggest that Kevin fit them in, and they needed to wrap and weren’t comfortable over staying their welcome.
