Correct me if I am wrong but I think IU said she wrote it for her fans. I think it is a sweet commentary of their parasocial relationship. My interpretation is IU is IU and V is Uaena (her fans). The cubes are trolls/ media. In the MV, she is deaf/mute, he is partially blind - it may seem there is no fathomable way these two can understand each other. However, whether separated by language (she cannot hear/speak) or distance (he cannot see), they communicate about sweet memories (about macroons and taking pictures) and laugh much like inside jokes between IU and her fans or photos at fanmeetings. They both have scars of criticism or scandals over the years. At its end the trolls/ media come to consume another artist and fandom and discard it like a pile of clothes and IU is ready to fight but V (the fans) steps in front of her to defend her and their bond, but they are met with a bitter end. A sad reality every artist must face someday. She sheilds V's good eye to protect him from the inevitable. I think she understands the way it is but is happy to set out on the journey with her fans anyway. I think of her lyric "Will you courageously set with me? Destroy me slowly and chilly, ruiner"; OR this is just about her and her boyfriend, and her asking for some privacy, not sure haha.😭😭😭😭

Yes. Possibly. And the MV was set to be deeper so it could show another form of love and relatable for others that can attract non-fans that dont know what the music is all about.

That may be true about the song, but the video was written and directed by the director who wanted to make a statement about persecution for difference and the power of love.

Love your reaction to this Austin… I think your interpretation on the symbolism is also a very valid and thoughtful way of looking at the MV. The song itself lyrically is separate from the MV which was directed by the concrete Utopia director (the film starring Park Seo Joon that Tae went to the premier of) Firstly for me… The MV moved me to tears. The song was intricately and exquisitely beautiful… IU’s Vocals gave me goosebumps. The subtlety in the acting for me was perfection and the visuals by both… just wow. Some have interpreted it as Tae being partially blind and IU deaf, I think that’s a possibility as is Tae being both partially blind and also death as they use sign language to communicate. Tae in all his sweetness, softness and gentleness was the honestly the definition of prettiness in this MV. There was something so beautifully vulnerable and delicate about him, that touches the soul. In terms of the meaning… In the Korean press releases of this song used in all the articles earlier today and media… IU said that ‘I want to respect and support everyone who loves and lives in various ways with love rather than hate’ this and the statement before when the song was called Love Wins was released which talked about people who face prejudices and obstacles in love… Personally make me think that it’s showing that many people in love face stigma’s and obstacles for whatever reason in life for things that they are born with and have no control over. Personally I think when they look through the camera they see the perfect world in which everyone can live without the lense of hate where people don’t see you or judge you for your stigma’s or labels but they see the whole you. Another thing that I find beautiful with the sign language involved is that both IU and Tae have a history of links to sign language and the deaf community. IU with her ear condition and Tae has communicated in official sign language many times (his birthday is even celebrated by some of deaf community in S.K). When it comes to the box I think of it as society trying to put us in a box… I also feel the box was representing the hate that tears people down and strips them of their humanity out of predjiduce. Personally I feel there was a wider message in this MV too and feel that Tae very specifically chose to appear in this MV because of the message. I’ve lost count of times over the years where he has said he would like to side with the marginalised or the minority in life. From the creation of his drawn characters in numerous content, to his BT21 character, to his fairytale character he chose in the 7th Army Zip content that was tragically killed for being different. I feel like this MV very much fits with that. Also I think the message that love allows us to see the world with a healing and whole lense too. I think Love Wins All was very specifically named as it was too. That All Love wins… as she sings in her lyrics too. She love wins all repeated, so you see all love wins. This MV for me was very much Art so I think it’s meant to be interpreted in various ways. I think the literature released by IU around the song is also very telling, to me it portrays that in a world where hate rules love is what conquers everything. IU’s last act as her hand is burning up (in the MV smoke is coming off it) is to shield Tae and cover his eye so he doesn’t see it. The ultimate meaning of love to protect someone else and put their well being before yourself. Very poetic. The song was just so beautiful. Fantastic job IU and Tae. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

It seems everyone who watches the video puts their own interpretation on what they think it means. The director also directed "Concrete Utopia" a disaster type film. From what I read, he said this video is a short, dystopian science-fiction thriller film. IU and V are a couple on the run from the antagonist, a killer robot shaped like a cube or box.

I hope people will check out Concrete Utopia, arguably the best film from South Korea this past year. (It's about Seoul after a monstrous earthquake and the survivors struggling to find livable residences in the city (there's only one building left in the city - kind of in the Snowpiercer vein) - and its a great acting job by Lee Byung Hun. I do think it's telling that the pile of clothes in the mv (and in Spring Day) are based on an art work by French artist Christian Boltanski called "Personne or people, but at the same time no one" (which also touches on the theme that the clothes are all that are left of people who are no longer with us). Boltanski has also done work based on the Holocaust and the pile of clothing is very much a reference to the concentration camps where Jews would pile their clothing before they stepped into the shower - and that would be all that remained of them.

It's a song that makes you reflect on how the world in different ways tries to define others and take people's souls their identities and what's left behind is a soul-less world. Only love can stop it from being so.

I had the same thought, not necesssarily as a message but as possible interpretation. I keep watching it for the beautiful moments and then end crying at the end. Until the last moment I hoped Tae would also sing.

The director did say viewers can have their own interpretation. The camcorder serves as a filter and allows imagination to roam freely. Everything is imagination through the camcorder. Reality resumes when you see their wounds and tattered clothes. In the end, the two of them are seen ascending to a better place through the camcorder, while they are eradicated in reality. So sad. So beautiful. So brutally real.

IU said she wrote this for Uaena who is her fandom to stay together no matter what the haters say about them. IU said several times during her past concerts about is and said love wins for many years and finally released a song about it. V in this MV is the Uaena and what an awesome story teller IU is always!

My personal view: the hooded people are just people that were around them, but they only have eyes for each other, so they can't really see/recall the faces of those other people. Even when things weren't awful and they were happy, the two of them was all that mattered...they are what's important, not all the stuff going on around them.

No need to apologize "for being a downer". The MV itself was full of dark, dystopian themes and imagery so it's only natural to talk about that and how you interpret it. I'm a firm believer that music has a message that the artists created in their minds but it also has hundreds of other meanings that the audience can get when they see it. Art would be boring and pointless otherwise. I love hearing all of the different takes and perspectives everyone has had with this. Personally I didn't see it as the camcorder showing the past or memories (although that's a popular take and I totally see how others take it that way). I saw it as if the camcorder had it's own magical or maybe even advanced technology in this universe that makes it so that it creates a false reality when you are being perceived by the camcorder. That way, the person may be scarred or disabled in real life but appear healthy and able-bodied through the camera. Or the person may have an empty plate but if they pretend to eat, they can practically taste real food once the camcorder is looking at them. Now I don't know if the dinner party scene was them letting their imaginations run wild or if they left the camcorder to film them so they could experience that false reality more with other imaginary people. And their faces are covered because they're not real so it's hard to fake a face onto them.

말을 못하는 IU + 한쪽눈이 안보이는 V. 저는 그들의 사랑은 어쩌면 이해받지 못하는 다른모습의 사랑(국적, 나이, 동성, 장애, 등..)을 표현하는것이 아닐까 생각했습니다. 카메라에 비춰진 모습은 그들이 바라는 편견과 혐오가 없는 세상을 나타내는것이 아닐까 싶네요. 저 박스와 IU와 V를 조롱하며 괴롭히는 얼굴없는 사람들은 세상의 편견과 시선들, 혐오를 상징적으로 나타내는 것이라는 얘기도 있더라구요.. 편견과 혐오를 벗어나려 발버둥치는 모습이 참 맘이 아프네요... 결국 그 굴레를 벗어나지 못하고 세상을 져버리는 사람들을 위로하는 곡이 아닌가 조심스레 생각해봅니다. 해석은 각자의 생각에 따라 다른 모습이니까요:)💚💜

“Phenomenal” yes, every time I cry, I wonder why. I have to figure it out. There is a certain universality to being at a meal, a dinner party, occasionally a wedding, or a festival when a terrifying interruption comes for you again as it has before. Death interrupts life. The whole mv reminded me of a type of love I’ve experienced for a short time. It reminded me of what people call The Rapture. Regarding the ME, the wedding banquet reminded me of Oct 7 in Israel and the rage against yet another action of H terrõrists. Interesting to see different viewpoints. Everyone suffers
