to answer your question about how they make music: they'll come up with a bunch of different riffs and patterns and endlessly jam on them and see what fits and piece it all together into a chohesive song. Then Maynard comes in a writes lyrics over it when its all done.

ive always thought that was lateralus you know how many people went out and bought a bass because they heard schism? Yeah 10,000 days is def groovier but if you listen closely a lot of the bass riffs are based off or straight up ripped off from King Crimson Discipline (still love em this shit is awesome)

And it only gets darker......this album was recorded during a very transitional time in all of their lives, children were being born, parents were passing on, life was shifting....and this was their soundtrack.........and it in turn became ours......welcome back my friend, once again you will love this gift from TooL...sensational album

Justin’s bass tone is the key to my soul.

Remember do Lipan Conjuring, Lost Keys, and Rosetta Stoned all together. And you will definitely want the lyrics up to get the full effect. Maynard can be a little difficult to understand in some spots lol.

Lipan Conjuring definitely goes with Rosetta Stoned. It has Navajo elements which pair with the Area 51 themes.

This album gets knocked for no good reason IMO. The songwriting is next level, not to mention the production quality is stellar. The motivic development in this song in particular never ceases to blow me away.

That bridge part gets me every time.... The lyrics and the way the bass breaks from the incessant riff with that eerie implied chord progression. Then the line.... "shouldn't have to say it all again....the universe is hostile, so impersonal...devour to survive, so it is, so it's always BEEN!!!" I mean, jesus christ....something about those precise words, over _that_ music, is like Mother Nature herself giving you a brutal lesson in the stoic understanding that for life to be....there MUST be suffering. You cannot avoid it. You will cause suffering. And you will suffer. And then die. And then your body will become food for everything that succeeds you. And this will continue until the heat death of the universe when entropy devours the universe itself. It's such a blatant brutal and _cool_ message, delivered in such ha musically captivating way. I love that part....

As far as how they write, the 3 “musicians” jam on ideas for hours and hours and weeks on end until they find a motif or idea they know they can build on and finish. They do a lot of rewriting, experimenting and plain old hammering it out. Wings for marie/10,000 days for example was rewritten in a whole different way for a month until they realized it was best to go with the version they had previously. They really dissect the music.

Oh man this album amazing. Such a range of sounds, contrasts, bright, dark, deep, it has a lot to offer. And the acid trip you mention from Lateralus, wait for it. It's on this album as well ; )

Make sure when you get to Lost Keys, you listen to Rosetta Stoned at the same time because they go together. Same thing goes with Wings for Marie and 10,000 Days.

I can't get over the little happy faces you make during the intro, like "Oh man I know this is gonna be good" :)

This whole release is absolutely killer. The drops in Jambi and The Pot are some of the best ever in music history.

"I don't understand how they make music.." Me either dude, but I certainly love the end result...

That section where the song gets stripped back to deep percussive rhythm at 4:29, and then the counter percussion hits at 4:40 is just so primal. Can't help but get sucked in. And people talk about guitar stab techniques, Maynard does this with his vocals throughout!

Another very strong "Danny" track but Justin on the bass is fully shining too. The progression of this song sucks me in every time👌🏻

Usually the music starts with a guitar or bass riff, which they bring to Danny to jam on until he finds his “entry point”. I feel that HE is the key because I’ve never heard a drummer who approaches building beats like him. He is one of a kind, possibly alien.😁

So my favorite theory about this album is that as the album progresses each song is representative of a different chakra, starting with Vicarious as the Root Chakra.

It's not a bad theory. Starting with the ego animal in the physical survival "arena" , and ending with the enlightened. Reading this comment actually got me thinking, because it ends with the angels being confused, that the album might be about Gods love for humans

Love this album. This track just slaps you in the face to start, gets your attention, and then the rest of the album sends you on a journey.

The weight of this song can only be felt if you are aware of the background. Happy to experience tool for the first time again vicariously through you ;)

10'000 days is somehow more accessible and as an album from start to finish, I'm with you. And "The Pot" is actually the only song ever I heard on mainstream radio back when it was released. But for me Lateralus is on another level, so is Fear Inoculum. Ahhh you know what? Forget it. Ranking Tool albums, I can't do : )

Yes, 10,000 Days is fantastic and it has always been my favorite.

Lost keys/rosetta stoned is my fav tool song ever. What a story and the best build up they ever did.

I'm going to guess the song you heard before is "The Pot"

Justin (bass) or Adam (guitar) come up with musical ideas. They get together with the Danny (drums) and they flesh out the idea into a song. Once done they send it to Maynard (vocals) and he listens over and over writing lyrics and vocals. The only time they all come back together is to record the music formally in the studio.

They come up with the music first, then Maynard steps in and writes the lyrics while listening.

Writing lyrics isn’t a sufficient enough description. He also composes the vocal melody which in itself is impressive because he often adds to the polyrhythm.

Just wanted to make it fully clear Maynard does it all. What’s obvious to the tooligans is not obvious to newbies. :)

@@gregwjohnson1986 I've read the same, but I've always thought there has to be a little bit more to it. Lateralus is the biggest giveaway - Fibonacci numbers are in both the music and the lyrics. There had to have been discussion about what the song was going to be about before they started.

Their process is that the musicians create the music first, then maynard comes in with the lyrics.

Pretty sure he’s talking about the music and the way it is structured, especially considering all the odd time signatures. Is the guitar part created first then the Bass and so forth.

it just took 6 years to get to that album! I didn't know that was NOT going to be a long time to wait for a new album then! crazy riffs and patterns! love it!

For the songwriting process: Adam, Danny & Justin will bounce ideas off each other until songs form and take shape. Sometimes multiple jams will be disassembled and then pieced together to complete the song... when the song is finished, Maynard will then react lyrically to the music and create his vocal lines.

It's going to be a real treat to see you ultimately experience "pneuma" and "invincible" on the Fear Inoculum album after watching you progress through all their previous work. Pneuma is their masterpiece and the drumming will BLOW YOUR MIND!! Make sure you watch the Vic Firth drum cam live video version of that song. Invincible is an incredible song and the perfect metaphorical story for a band this special and accomplished releasing an album after a 13 year break. You need to somehow get your mind in a place to appreciate the 13 year delay we all lived through before listening to Fear Inoculum and especially "Invincible".

I think it’s as cool just in a different progressive way. The acid trip has to end some time and then it’s back to reality and dealing with life haha. Welcome back!!!

for how they go about making music: Adam Jones and Justin Chancellor tend to mess around with riffs until one of them finds something they feel is worthy, then they jam a little on it, and send it off to Danny to think on. when he gets locked in wit ha good groove, they go back and flesh it out till they lock the track down, then and only then does Maynard step in and give the song the message. He writes in reaction to how the song makes him feel and the thoughts he's trying to get across. As far as I know, there's a collaboration from all of them during the whole process, but that's the basics of how they go about it.

10000 days has some of my favorite lyrics by Tool. Right in Two and Wings 1&2 and The Pot is so good both rhythmically and lyrically.

How did this band get so much better than anyone else. Maynard, danny, and adam are amazing..... but my God. That bass!!!!

10,000 Days. This album hooked me on Tool. I think that CD was in my car for the better part of a year. Also, safe bet its The Pot that you've heard. It on par with Closer by Nine inch Nails. Just about everyone and their mother have heard them.

The bass, drums, and guitar make a composition and Maynard comes in after and does the vocals according to the instrumental composition. 🤘

They do hours long "freak-out" jam sessions which are recorded and then they go back and mine for the good shit then write, rehearse, re-write, repeat....then I think it's a fairly typical recording session with full band, sans-maynard, then overdubs and whatnot afterward. Vocals at the end I imagine.

I think I love the glitch..it always seems to hit at the perfect points in the song..shooting colors from your aura. Spiral out.

A lot of the time, their inspiration is themselves - taking older songs and pulling components out to combine into new ones in surprising ways. Like this track is pretty obviously the inspiration for their later one 7empest.

Yeah I’ve seen someone else comment that the music is written first then Maynard comes in, which is correct. He’s said this on multiple occasions. To go a tad deeper than that, from everything I’ve read, I think Justin, Adam, and Danny really just get in a room together and bring what they have to the table as far as what they’ve written by themselves and share with each what they’ve come up with and go from there. That’s about as far as they’ve let us in to their writing process as far as I’m concerned. Edit: just want to add I’ve been following them since Lateralus dropped 20 years ago and have read up and kept up on them extensively over the years. They like their privacy.

Adam says they create little pieces/riffs and then they expand on that. I've heard him say that in a number of different ways from attending VIP session before shows. Once they put together all the music, and that process must be VERY COMPLETE, then Maynard lays down the lyrics, which I'm told is a completely separate process. Maynard does not like it if they decide to change the music once he lays down his part. I believe Tool's process probably differs from most.

This is my favorite Album. You probably already heard, but Wings for Marie(Pt1) and 10,000 Days (Wings Pt2) go together. I also suggest Lipan Conjuring, Lost Keys and Rosetta Stoned to go together. They are a part of a story. Finally, Intension and Right in Two are also a set. This will enhance your experience IMO. Also, Maybe after you listen to Jambi you can do A Perfect Circle "Judith" on Friday since it is part of MJK Mom's story in 10K days. Look forward hearing your Friday's new sets and supporting you somehow.

I know what you've heard about Lateralus, but trust me, 10K Days is their best album. You better buckle up, they are going to blow your mind so many times in so many different ways (or, at least, really captivate you).

TOOL is kinda made like....a foursome where one waits till the other three have "finished" and then adds his special sauce..they are not all friends

I don't necessarily think everyone enjoys watching others suffer, I think for many it's more about knowing we have it better than those suffering worse and it makes us feel better about our own hardships. Like "Well, I lost my job, but at least I wasn't raped and tortured" or "I lost my foot, but at least I'm alive". And it's a way to know that we're not the only ones that suffer. In the end it's all about feeling better about ourselves than enjoying the suffering of others...

Wings for Marie parts one and two together, both songs leading up to Rosetta stoned, and make sure to do intension and right in two together also. 5 more vids will get you through the whole album
