Hermes is Odysseus’s grand-grand father. He also is (I think) the most present god in myths and helps heroes a lot. Circe tried to seduce Odysseus to show him that “men are pigs”. She was going to kill him as soon as they kissed but Odysseus didn’t comply because of Penelope. Circe is impressed by Odysseus’s love for his wife and decides to help him after that. In Done For, Circe summons a Chimera and Odysseus (with the moly’s effect) summons a Cyclops. Kinda like a pokemon duel (And holy moly was a joke ahahahha. Moly is the flower and jay really wanted to make that pun)

Yeah, it's really confusing because on one hand the moly is just supposed to make Odysseus immune to Circe's magic, but Hermes also says it'll give him a taste of the power and let him summon a being from his imagination. Props to Dave for hearing the Cyclops roar; must have listened to this album a dozen times and never heard it.

When Odysseus snaps out of Circe's seduction and is like "I CAN'T!" and the violin enters with the melody of "Penelope..." from previous songs, it's such a brilliant moment. • @LucasGonzalez-rj9bk
    @LucasGonzalez-rj9bk5 ай бұрын

Moly, the drug referenced in the Odessey was a root with a black stem and white flower. Hermes gives it to Odysseus to protect him from Circe’s magic. In Epic, the writer changed what moly can do. In Epic it can make you manifest a monster to defeat your opponent, so Odysseus summons from his imagination, the specter of Polyphemus, which defeats Circe’s Chimera monster(that’s why you heard Polyphemus’s roar in “Done For”) That doesn’t happen in the original text. In that, moly simply protects you from spells, so when Circe tries to change Odysseus into a pig with her potions and magic wand, she can’t, and he defeats her. Scholars have argued as to what Moly actually is, some have argued it’s fictional, others say it’s wild garlic. Also, Poseidon in Ruthlessness is a change from the original Odessey. In the original text, all but 43 of Odysseus’s 600 men are killed by cannibal Laestragonian giants. In Epic, Poseidon kills all the men, leaving only one ship, with Odysseus’s 43 crew alive. There are many changes form the source material in Epic, but it’s still a great musical project and for the most part is surprisingly loyal to the source material.

Another thing in the song "There Are Other Ways" is that when Circe is starting to seduce Odysseus, Odysseus starts talking about how all the mistakes he made will be the last he makes, copying what Circe said when she was bewitching his men. This is because Circe is successfully putting a spell on him. Hermes told him that the moly would only last until he defeated his opponent. Once he was done fighting Circe, the protection wore off and she was able to start putting a spell on him. It was only his love for Penelope and his devotion to get home that rescued him from the spell at the last moment before Circe tried to stab him with him puppeted. It really goes to show just how much he really would "trade the world to see his son and wife." He would kill an innocent baby and fight off even the spells of a deity. knowing the snippets of the future, the amount of things he would do for this purpose will only grow.

The first notes of the saga recall the words "If I don't return. Then 600 people will make the whole place burn" from the previous saga. Probably memories. And the appearance of Hermes makes sense - he is the deity of travelers and those fleeing from punishment

I can hear the "make this whole place burn" line but think it is a nod to "Legendary" Telemachus' song, The part where he says, "I've no idea if you're dead or just too far" potentially implying that that song happens at the same time just across the sea; hence Odysseus looking out to the see in the scene description.

@@LacyMeyers-yq9iu I checked and I can hear it, but I doubt it's happening at the same time. Most of the story is supposed to go without flashbacks, so the good song about Odysseus meeting Penelope was removed. The second argument is that the song is much sadder and is supposed to resemble something we know. I can agree that it is a harbinger of a character, like in Poseidon they give a short melody to herald future events

  • @CHB_is_here

1:20 just wanted to point out that the melody after this, foreshadows something. (For those who haven’t seen/heard it, I suggest you scroll because of spoilers.) But in Calypso’s song “Not sorry for loving you” has this as her main melody. So it foreshadows Calypso. Really cool detail in that. And in the entire Ocean Saga, (before Ruthlessness) has brass instruments sprinkled in the songs. Jay said that Poseidon’s instruments are brass, so the entire saga before his song foreshadows Poseidon coming. There is a TON of foreshadowing and references to other/future songs that I could point them out for hours . But this is already long enough lol

It's been a long time since I read 'THE ODYSSEY' but I believe Hermes is helping Odysseus because Athena asked him to. Being the God of Messages he is used in many fables to help the characters being the messanger of other Gods. Jorge's music conveys that Athena sent him brilliantly as well. The harmonies in 'wouldn't you like' are sung by the vocalist of Athena showing her intent. Jorge has many subtle story telling moments like this (obvious one in this saga is the Penelope motif being played when Odysseus says "I Can't").

As for the context between the end of Done For and the start of There Are Other Ways, after Odysseus corners Circe with a dagger, she tries to seduce him (everyone's true colours are revealed in acts of lust). In Jorge's livestream, the accompanying video showed that during the first verse There Are Other Ways, Circe is manipulating Odysseus (so much power, but there's no puppet here), through the course of the verse takes his dagger away and while they're about to kiss she's planning to stab him in the throat, but Odysseus refusing her (I can't - the next verse about Penelope) makes Circe change her mind and help him instead.

In 'Wouldn't You Like' Hermes gives Odysseus the herb/flower Moly and he eats it while Hermes sings. When you hear the 'ooooohhh' that is after Odysseus got the glow up, ate the flower and starts to feel the power. Also Hermes told Ody that he can summon a creature he just has to imagine it and i love that it is a cyclops because of the call back to the Cyclops Saga and that Ody knows how strong a Cyclops is. In 'Done for' Circe summons her chimera (the first roar), Odysseus summons his Cyclops (the roar you heard) and they fight (like Pokémons). That is what you hear in the background and with the roar and you can hear how Odysseus gets his dagger and at the end of the song he stands very near before Circe with the blade on her throat. In 'There Are Other Way' Circe tries to seduce Odysseus, while she tries to get control over him and show that men really are pigs. It works at first, the more he is singing with her, his dobts etc. are her influencing him slowly and while he is trapped in her seduction she takes the dagger, gets him to sit down and as soon as he would kiss her she would kill him by pushing the blade into his neck. The 'there's no puppet here' is really funny because we know she is a puppeteer and she takes control over Odysseus and he is the puppet. But then (musical-)Odysseus thinks of Penelope (the motif you can hear after 'I can't!' is Penelopes motif) and says no. That has her kind of surprised, she hides the dagger and listens. She references the act of kindness to what she is doing for Odysseus and his crew. That she helps them will maybe lead to kinder people who land on her island and don't just want to kill or do yk what to her and her nymphs.

Anyway there are other animativs for the future saga they are pretty good but of course songs are from clips so they arent "fully" ready but they are sitll really good and you might think as beta versions of the future versions still would recommend it strongly to react to them Also dude behind Hermes absolutly killed it and yes he has that charisma and presence when playing him.

In the song- wouldnt you like hermes says “take this root and you will be able to conjure a being of your imagination” so the sound of polythemus is odysseys summoning a Cyclops to fight the creature that circe called at the beginning of the song

IDK man I have a theory re Hermes, either he's doing it for the family connection (Ody is his great grandson), or he's doing it for Athena (because I'm 99% sure shes' still looking out for him), or he's just doing it 'cause he's bored, it's totally something he would do xD Hermes has big "do it for the vine" energy

Oh dang yeah I never noticed the cyclops roar but that's totally what it is. Jay actually commissioned an animatic of the fight scene that he included in the launch and yeah, the monster Ody manifests is a cyclops, he even starts out without a club then pulls it out at the perfect moment when Circe's chimera is charging him, turning the tide of the fight with the hidden weapon just as things were turned on him and his men by Polyphemus

15:08 yes. He summons a cyclops to defeat circe using the moly root. Since Circe can summon a chimera to protect her and her palace

So, from Homer's Odyssey, in book X Odysseus is recounting his story to the Phaeacians (the Odyssey starts towards the end of his journey and all the things that happened before are told by Odysseus himself) and he is telling his encounter with Circe. Before reaching her house, Hermes comes to Odysseus saying to him to take this "medicine" against which Circe's magical drinks are useless. Then, when Circe tries to use essentially a magic wand on him, he has to intimidate her with his sword. The god also basically tells him not to refuse to sleep with her when she will ask to marry him, so that she can release his men and become his friend, but he has to make her swear by the gods not to try anything against him. Odysseus then describes the herb: (translating from the text) "When he finished talking he gave me the healthy herb already picked up by him, and nature divides it this way: the root is brown, the flower milky white; the gods call it moly: it resists a mortal hand that wants to pick it up from the ground; it yields to the gods, who can achieve everything". And then Hermes goes away and Odysseus goes to Circe's house.

it bears mentioning that the short video jorge and tayla made to tease the release of this saga, set to the last song "there are other ways", had Circe seducing Odysseus to take the "dagger" (spoon) out of his hand and almost stabs him with it before he pulls away

Wouldn't You Like or Hermes song is my absolute favorite Done For almost needs an animatic to properly illustrate that Odysseus and Circe are locked in combat during the song summoning a Cyclops and Chimera respectively otherwise UNDERWORLD SAGA wait begins! Because like any good Greek hero Odysseus took his mandatory trip to Hades

When Odysseus saids “I can’t” it’s when the viola plays at 18:04 it’s when you know he’s going to talk about Penelope back at Ithaca and Jorge is trying to make up another head cannon of either he makes Odysseus bad at numbers, he added 2 years to make Circe feel bad or something else I forgot :) Hope that helps

In the original Odysseus sleeps with Circe and leaves before the child is born (in some she has three sons with him) and because Athena knows the child is gonna kill Odysseus she tries to kill the baby but Circe stops her and later lets her son go off to meet his father were Odysseus then attacks him not knowing who he is causing Telegonous to stab his father with a poison tipped spear that his mother Circe gave him for protection so Telegonous feels kinda bad and takes Penelope and Telemachus back to Aeaea (the island that cire is exiled on for Turing her cousin into Scylla the sea monster) were Telegonous falls in love with Penelope and Telemachus falls in love with Circe and in some she turns then immortal sorry I wrote a whole paragraph i just love Greek mythology😁

I feel like I heard Athena in Wouldn’t you like? Like I hear a woman’s voice that sounds like Athena so maybe Athena maybe tricked Odysseus to make him grow up, whilst still helping him without his knowledge like she’s sorta manipulating the other gods to help him yet teach him? Edit: at like 10:28 you can hear a faint singing of a woman

As others have mentioned, Hermes is Odysseus’ maternal great-grandfather, so that’s likely a significant part of reason he helps out with the Moly. In the original text it is also indicated that actually Athena sent Hermes to help out, but I’m not sure if that’s included in Epic in any way

Another little note that I've heard other people bring up, the number in "the underworld" would be inaccurate if you believe that no one died after Poseidon killed all but 43 of the men, but apparently when they were on cersei's island one of the men got drunk on the roof of her palace and fell and broke his neck, apparently Jorge was going to bring that up in " the underworld " but he felt it made it too comedic, and he just left the number in, which is fitting because the man who died on cersei's Island literally only exists to die and then be forgotten about

Odysseus is Hermes great grandson though idk if Odysseus knows this so it’s like a relative helping out a younger one, Hermes just seems like he’s taking Odysseus side and watching over him kind of. So Circe does actually use magic the flower Odysseus ate is a magical flower that basically gives him her power for a limited amount of time. So the men are actually pigs a roar in the background is that these two are turning into beasts fighting each other! Odysseus turned into a cyclops type creature and Circe turned into a chimera or sent a chimera after him that you can see in this Saga’s art in the stain glass! (I know this is because the creature Jay uploaded an animation showing that specific fight scene during the live watch when it first came out on Valentine’s Day)
