Antz has a weird political subtext to it, everything about that movie from the character design to the choice of voice actors is so weird, it's hard not to like. Bugs life is seven samurai for kids, so that has that going for it. Also I'd like to suggest the animated films April and Extraordinary World (2015) and The Adventures of Mark Twain (1985) both really interesting and underappreciated animated films

So ANTZ and Bugs Life are similar in the sense that the ants are being oppressed by a system or antagonist that they would eventually have to revolt against. Here it’s general Mandible. With Bugs Life, it was Hopper. There’s also a similar theme of encouraging individualism. Z and Flick are both sort of outcasts who are different than the rest of the colony in some way and have the courage to challenge the status quo. I love both movies but they’re definitely for very different audiences (as is usually the case between Dreamworks and Disney) lol. Antz is more adult. Bugs Life is a cleaned up, cuter take on a similar issue. Lol

Fun fact: When the ants make that tower - Real ants can actually do that to save each other from floods. They're the most wonderful, selfless team workers in the world.
I gotta admit. My favorite part of A Bug’s Life are the bloopers. 😅 The grasshopper asks the female ant “Do I look stupid… to you?” *dramatic pause* she exclaims “yes!” And he says while stifling his tears, “I am going to my trailer.” 😂
Music for Antz was composed by John Powell and Harry Gregson-Williams, the same team that composed the first Shrek film.
The iconic Bala scream paired with that music. Fucking phenomenal. You’d think she was really about to die. Love this movie. Thank you for bringing the nostalgia back!🖤
This is another one of those Nala is Simbas sister situations. Think Z even makes an inbred joke to poke fun at movie logic.
I've always preferred Antz, but I love the fake bird scene in A Bug's Life

The story behind how this movie and A Bug's Life are so similar is because back when Jeffrey katzenberg still work at Disney he was part of a board meeting talking about some of the movies that they wanted to make in the future in A Bug's Life was one of the movies that they talked about when Jeffrey katzenberg left Disney to go start his own company DreamWorks that was one of the ideas he stole and that's the reason why Antz and A Bug's Life have so much similarities to them.
I honestly prefer _A Bug’s Life_ over _Antz_ as I love that film more and I grew up with it more than Antz. If the majority say _Antz_ more than _Bug’s Life_ more power to all of you, but I prefer _A Bug’s Life_

A bugs life just felt more open to everybody. Antz is more complex and is actually made for adults. Also the animation creeps out some people and they just stop mid movie
Antz came out first. It was supposed to come out early 1999, but when Pixar refused to delay A Bug's Life from Prince of Egypt's release, they got petty and moved Antz's release a few weeks before ABL, lol Also, Antz is a DreamWorks only film. Universal wasn't involved with the studio til the late 2010's I think. It's still jarring watching a DW film that starts with Universal
Antz was the first cgi film to do water effects and got an award for that.
I loved both Antz and A Bug's Life. I think my cousin and I probably watched Antz more because it was funnier to us (inside jokes) but both are childhood favorites. 💚

The story of Antz and Bug's Life is more complicated. It goes back to when left Paramount to become head of Disney. He brought one of his top people from Paramount, Katzenberg, with him. Katzenberg was put in charge of Disney movies and TV. Katzenberg did a great job, turning around what had been seen as a failing studio. They went from last to first among the major studios in box office. He created Touchstone pictures there. The so called Disney Renaissance in animation was under Katzenberg, which covered Little Mermaid through Tarzan. He was also the one at Disney who recognized the important of computer animation and made the exclusive deal to be Pixar’s distributor. Then the #1 guy at Disney died in an accident and Katzenberg wanted that job. Eisner picked someone else. Katzenberg left and co-founded DreamWorks. Eisner did not like this and withheld a bunch of bonus money that was due to Katzenberg. (Katzenberg later sued and got his money, which was a huge amount). DreamWorks made their first movie, The Prince of Egypt, and set a release date. Then Eisner set Bug’s Life release data to be the same weekend as The Prince of Egypt. DreamWorks asked Disney to not do that but Eisner would not budge, so DreamWorks pushed back Prince. Then Eisner scheduled something to conflict with that too. Katzenberg responded by pushing up the release date of Antz, which has been scheduled for several months after Bug’s, to be before Bug’s. Lord Farquaad in Shrek is widely believed to be based on Eisner because of all the above. Anyway, Katzenberg knew of Bug's before Antz started. On the other hand given the animation technology of the time the good choice if you wanted decent looking anthropomorphized animals was ants. Furry animals would look crappy, and other non-furry animals either wouldn't anthropomorphize well or had too many negative associations for an audience to empathize with. Ants are simple enough to animate well, anthropomorphize well, and have a fairly positive reputation except when they are in your house.
I do prefer _A Bug's Life,_ but _Antz_ is still really good. I like the realistic size differences between the different bugs, the social commentary is handled well, General Mandible is a great, extremely threatening villain, I love the epic version of "The Ants Go Marching" everyone sings while going into battle, and the whole battle against the termites is a scene I'll never forget. R.I.P. Barbatus.

I loved this movie as a kid and watched it repeatedly. I noticed the odd shapes of the ants' heads, but just went with it. I never saw A Bug's Life until way later though, so this one has much more nostalgia for me.
One of my childhood movies. My Dad also loves this movie too. Looking back he probably played this movie more for him than us kids. 😅🤣
I saw this at the cinema. It was a mystery movie night so we were amongst the first people to see it. The animation style was very new. Almost everything coming before had been 2d . The casting of this film is excellent. Every character plays on the strengths and characteristics of the voice actors. It's a great film.
Woody Allen said of the script "They write me better than I do".
This. i LOVED this movie. I thought it was an awesome, more realistic style and Dreamworks wasn't afraid to get deep and dark. AND they said "Hell" and "Dammit".

I grew up with both A Bugs Life and ANTZ, so I never really had a preference. It’s cool how they tackle the same social issues while taking different approaches. Another ant related film I highly recommend is Ant Bully which has great animation, great funny moments, and a great message. 🐜💚🖤
I love both of them. "Antz" came out before "A Bug's Life". Good livestream. It's weird to see Woody Allen and Sylvester Stallone doing voices in an animated film. I also don't remember Dan Aykroyd doing a voice in this. I also highly recommend reacting to "An American Tail" (1986) and "The Secret Of Nimh" (1982), two animated films both directed by Don Bluth.
Omg yes, so happy you watched this. Such a great movie and so underrated. Definitely hits different when you watch it as an adult.
I'm always more biased to Antz. We watched Antz in class and our teacher had no clue it had mature content. She kept threatening to turn it off because of the swearing but never did, lol.
Both Antz and A Bugs Life are very incredible movies.
Fun Fact: Cartoon Network Aired it once back in 2000s but they edited the movie shorter and bleeped out all the swear words included the rape scene of Azteca.
I find myself still quoting this movie randomly and so does my mom lol It's always been a little weird and intense but I still love it. Always makes me laugh.
Highly recommend the following animated movies: Wizards (1977) The Hobbit (1977) Heavy Metal (1981) The Last Unicorn (1982) The Flight Of Dragons (1982) All five are available on KZread Movies channel to rent or buy, so no excuses about finding them. I suggest turning on subtitles, since you might have mute all the music.

The general is voiced by Gene Hackman
If I recall it was actually a Disney employee who got fired and decided to get revenge by copying Bugs, but not certain if they were like a higher up like producer or if it was an animator. The animation between this movie and Ice Age are very wonky but some how cool which allows the movies to be unique. And probably helped the design for future movies. Antz is clearly an adult animated movie and Bugs a kids film. I never picked up on Antz being a war film, but compare it to live action war films and it is noticeable. Especially the themes and plot. Another ant movie if you aren’t tired of ants is Ant Bully. It’s animation is very Jimmy Neutron/Nickelodeon show vibe, but still good.

Funny you mention the Ant Bully looking like Jimmy Neutron, because apparently it was done by the same animation studio that did Jimmy Neutron (the film and series), DNA Productions. Sadly the studio is closed due to the box office failure of _The Ant Bully_
I feel like this movie stamped a few habits in me. The "Ants go marching song", Bala's bubble-water drink (heck knows I've done that multiple times as a kid and even now, I just forgot why until now), the foods (that plastic sandwich lol), and many more. But Bugs Life also have me memories too. I guess in terms of what I remember more, it's Antz
To be honest this film introduced me to actor and comedian Woody Allen and it made me love his sense of humor.
Oh hell yeah I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Sinbad. To this day Eris has one of the coolest character designs to me and I love how they animated her hair always moving like she’s underwater!

this is so underrated!! absolutely love this animation!!! good stuff man
One thing I had heard with Antz (not seen a comment on this yet). One of the heads of depts/producers (someone with a big title - Katzenberg I think) had left Disney around the same time they started producing A Bugs Life so already knew about A Bugs Life. That same guy went to (or even co-founded I think) Dreamworks who produced Antz, so took the basic idea to compete with Disney's A Bugs Life around a similar release date, even though the storylines don't really match. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong if anyone knows any different - it's just what I'd seen somewhere a long time ago, so don't know how much truth there is to it.
Man, this really is a ant movie about eugenics, pretty wild, but I still like it
AntZ and Bug’s Life are such opposites, but the same coin. The ups and downs of their society functions. Communism and such. The power of the many and the individual minded.
This movie had an impressive cast! Go check it out if you haven't. The soundtrack is from the guys that brought you all of the How to Train Your Dragon AND Narnia, Shrek 2/3, Kingdom of Heaven.
Interesting reaction, I also hope you should react to the underrated Disney Movie The Great Mouse Detective.
Well this bring me back. I remember this film well. I remember going to see it as a kid when I was at a friend birthday party. God I must have been 6 or 7 years old. 😂
I remember obsessing over the battle scene and acting it out with whatever toys I had
i thought i saw this movie. I watched till half the video waiting for the kid to shrink to ant size . I somehow confused this for The Ant Bully
Now they need to watch Ant Bully
He was definitely not the ball
This was DreamWorks first movie and if you see the shoelace scene they did something similar in bee movie another movie DreamWorks made
recommending "hoodwinked", "racing stripes", "flushed away", "the boxtrolls", "the dark crystal", "mowgli: legend of the jungle" "the book of life" and "a monster in paris"
I would say that with Antz, its message is a coup de tat from within its own hierarchy, with mandible using fear tactics for his termite war, and lies and false promises with the digging of the mega tunnel, in order to create a colony of superior ants, while with A Bug's Life, the oppressors are of a different species of insect, offering protection to a seemingly weak and innocent colony of ants with no sense of self defense, and using that weakness to the grasshopper's advantage. Both movies seem to reflect real life history in some form or another.
for the next dreamworks movie, can you guys watch monsters vs aliens 2009 movie
Your thoughts were very interesting... Having grown up with this movie but not seeing a bugs life until I was a late teen, I really enjoy this over the Pixar rendition. I think part of it is also the "Woody Allen" of it all: he's a very different kind of personality for this kind of movie, and if you know any if his movies I think you'd get a bit more of his personality throughout the narrative. Either way, great reaction and keep up the awesome work!
I prefer A Bug’s Life over Antz, in my opinion, but this is still a good animated film and a decen start to the career of DreamWorks Animation! Speaking of which, this is the film that began the rivalry between Disney and DreamWorks.
I love how Weaver always there when Z in trouble

Back in the late 90's when I was still in elementary school, Antz released on VHS and DVD months before A Bug's Life. I liked Antz, but I loved A Bug's Life because I found Hopper to be the most intense G rated movie villain I've ever seen compared to General Mandible as a PG rated movie villain. But the wait for A Bug's Life to be released on video felt like a whole year after Antz released on video. I also had the games based on the movies. Antz on Game Boy Color and A Bug's Life on PlayStation.
What a CUTIE on the right!
I kind of prefer the plot of Antz better, but the villian/hopper in Bug's life is more scrary-to me.
