I think it took a little too long for people to learn to love JT. Even when approaching the deadline for who to keep between Horvat or Miller I remember fans being ho hum about losing Miller because it was a foregone conclusion Horvat would stay (captain, true centreman, etc). I'd like to see fans give Miller the love he deserves this season to make up for the apathy they showed his first five years in Vancouver. JT might be one of the most versatile players in the league. He can play multiple positions, any situation, gets the points while nullifying opponents' star players, brings the passion to kick his teammates' asses when they're slacking, he's big and intimidating enough to stand up to anyone's tough guys - he is just awesome.

Tampa won 2 cups immediately following the trade. The cup nullifies any problems with moves leading up to it. The Miller trade freed up cap space and allowed the bolts to get necessary depth for their cup win. It's also a great trade for the Canucks. A win-win.

The Canucks have made some horrible trades like the Cam Neely trade and the OEL trade especially. But they also hit it out of the park with the Miller trade and even more so with the Naslund trade. Naslund became a superstar and captain while the guy they traded to get him (Alex Stojanov) played only 45 games for the Pens scoring a whopping 2 goals then finsihed his career in the minors.

I'm a HUGE JT Miller fan, but I still say that Benning overpaid for a salary dump. A 2nd and a 3rd plus a prospect would have been enough, but Benning always overpaid.

Tampa was front loaded with talent and had to make a decision. At the time just getting a first was great for tampa. Everyone knew they needed cap help and no one wanted to make yzerman look good. You must forget how tampa got jt miller and ryan mcdonaugh...

That 1st round pick the lightning got resulted in them getting Blake Coleman who was a big part of those cup wins. Miller wasn’t that big a part of the Lightning while still getting a good return, unlike what they would have got for Tyler Johnson. No guarantee Miller has the same success with Tampa and no guarantee Tampa wins the cup if they don’t make that trade. Win win trade

I was super happy we got him. I saw him play every year and it looked to me he was held back from his true potential. He played a lot of third line minutes. I felt he was very under appreciated before we got him and could tell many doubted him. I also forgot he is a big man. Kind of like Bert. Big guy dominates most of the play. He was actually one of my favorite players not on the Canucks. Also Bert came to us in a trade. I was hoping Kassian would be one of those guys. Not quite. Miller in my opinion has been our best player the last two seasons. Excluding Hughes.

Can Neely trade was probably worse. You remember how stacked Tampa bay was when they traded miller? They couldn’t keep him.

This is a case of both teams got what they needed. Tampa got the parts that won them 2 Stanley Cups (can't argue with that), and the Canucks got a guy they could try out as a top 6 forward and he showed the NHL what he was made of, and it looks like all stars and true leadership. The kind of player who can lead the team to one or more Stanley Cups of our own.

If the Lightning keep Miller, they don't get Coleman or Goodrow the following year. This wasn't even close to a bad trade for TB. Win-win for both teams. Bad take.

I'd call it a fair trade. The Lightning got assets that could have turned out better, but did help them win back to back Stanley Cups, and the Canucks got a bona fide superstar power forward in JT, who may yet help us win our first Stanley Cup. Yup, fair trade. When trading for prospects, you can't always predict how they will turn out in the long run, that's always the risk you take when trading proven talent for future potential. That potential that could be in the future is not always realized. Also, Miller wasn't exactly on a trajectory with the Lightning to be the point a game to 100 point guy he's become here. The opportunities, chemistry and coaching he's gotten here are much different then what he would have gotten there. Maybe he'd have turned out better, worse or the same, but that's all speculation. What we know is by coming here, he got opportunities to play on lines he'd never otherwise have gotten, and won himself a role as a solid top 6 forward and top line centre that may never have happened in Tampa, where they already had their top line guys already in place at the time. Whereas Vancouver was in the midst of a period of continuous retooling and so there were openings for him to get those top line minutes and responsibilities and he showed his true colours by rising to the occasion. I think the trade put everyone right where they needed to be for good things to happen.

As much as I love JT Miller Tampa only traded him for a cap dump that led to 2 cups I honestly think its a fair trade to both although the Canucks got the best player overall until today, 2 cup speeks volumes
