Re-creating Miyazaki's watercolours set PART 01

This is something I wanted to do for a long time - I used the Holbein watercolour tubes I had, added some colours, mixed some and re-created the set of colours recommended by Hayao Miyazaki. This is based on the first (old) edition of the 24 colour set that was being sold in Studio Ghibli’s museum in Mitaka (some colours got discontinued by Holbein though so you can not buy it any more). I will be painting an illustration using this set in another video.
The list of colours (including the ones requiring mixing)
1. Crimson Lake
2. Opera
3. Vermilion
4. Yellow Ocher
5. Permanent Yellow Lemon
6. Permanent Yellow Deep
7. Permanent Yellow Orange
8. Permanent Green No.1
9. Permanent Green No.3
made from Sap Green W075 4:1 Yellow Ochre W034
10. Cadmium Green Deep
11. Cobalt Green Yellow Shade
made from Permanent Green No.2 W067 3:1 Viridian (hue) W061
12. Cobalt Blue Hue
13. Cerulean Blue
14. Ultramarine Deep
15. Compose Blue
16. Prussian Blue
17. Bright Violet
18. Light Red
19. Burnt Umber
20. Burnt Sienna
21. Ivory Black
22. Yellow Grey
23. Violet Grey
made from W025 Brilliant Pink 9:1 W120 Quinacridone Violet
24. Davis Grey

    I already asked a pal of mine last year and he sent me the watercolor sketching set from the Ghibli Museum! They have discontinued some of the colors the set originally had a few years ago. Here's the colors for the new set for those taking notes (and this comes from my own set I received from the museum)! 1. Crimson Lake (W 010) 2. Opera (W 013) 3. Vermillion Hue (W 019) 4. Yellow Ochre (W 034) 5. Permanent Yellow Lemon (W 035) 6. Permanent Yellow Deep (W 037) 7. Permanent Yellow Orange (W 038) 8. Yellow Grey (W 151) 9. Viridian Hue (W 061) 10. Permanent Green No. 1 (W 066) 11. Cadmium Green Deep (W 070) 12. Bamboo Green (W 078) 13. Cobalt Blue Hue (W 091) 14. Cerulean Blue (W 092) 15. Ultramarine Deep (W 094) 16. Compose Blue (W 096) 17. Prussian Blue (W 097) 18. Lavender (W 116) 19. Bright Violet (W 175) 20. Light Red (W 130) 21. Burnt Umber (W 133) 22. Burnt Sienna (W 134) 23. Davy's Grey (W 155) 24. Ivory Black (W 138)

    That is a very pretty palette. I had no idea that Miyazaki had a particular set of colours. I heard the background artist uses Nicker poster paints. Have you used these paints before?

  • @mattjabbar

    @mattjabbar

    7 жыл бұрын

    Background artists (like Oga Kazuo for example) use NICKER poster colours but they are more similar to gouache than to watercolours. I have a set and use them sometimes: mateuszurbanowicz.com/concept-background-01 or mattjabbar.tumblr.com/post/142296121916/this-is-a-study-i-did-recently-while-resting-a

  • @AutomHatter

    @AutomHatter

    7 жыл бұрын

    Since you have used both the poster color and gouache, would you say they are similar enough to produce very similar results? Or would you suggest to get the NICKER if someone wanted to create backgrounds like Ghibli does?

  • @mattjabbar

    @mattjabbar

    7 жыл бұрын

    I think they are similar, just the poster colors are maybe a little bit inferior but cheaper. I prefer acrylic gauche for my opaque paint paintings so maybe that’s when it don’t really like poster colors so much ;)

  • @ChristopherSobieniak

    @ChristopherSobieniak

    Gouache is a pretty standard paint in background painting simply for being opaque and having a matte finish.

    Regular gouache isn't fadeproof, let alone waterproof, so it tends to be used for commercial illustration where printing of the artwork is necessary. I'm sure acrylic-based gouache solves those issues very well for those that want permanency.

    Thank you Mateusz for sharing & showing Miyazaki's color palette of watercolors. Its interesting he used Hoblein watercolors as I have a collection of Holbein watercolors. Fascinating to use & work with Miyazaki's choice of Holbein color, his color palette. I noted you added Perm. Green No. 3, Colbalt Green Yellow Shade & Violet grey. My curiousity to use those colors in my watercolor paintings. I love Miyazaki's amazing works, I watch his anime, & collected his art books.

    !! Excellent! I made a list a short while ago, and at the time that I made it, Cobalt Green was a part of the set of 24 that one could buy from HWC (not the Ghibli set)... I do not know if that's changed. For anyone looking for the Nicker Poster Colour (and TMK paper), a friend just spent a couple of hours at Sekaido for me this past Sunday (18 June, '17), and was not able to find either (no pads or sheets of TMK, no set of 24 of the 40 ml Nicker) and the staff was uncertain if they would have either for some time, if at all. I remain hopeful. Sigh... (they also didn't seem to carry the artetje 9XX series! ???) As ever Mateusz, thanks for the time and effort you put into all of your videos. They're a great share.

    Did a little more work on my set, and if you buy the Holbein watercolor set of 24 that is currently shipped, then you will need to get another 9 (or mix) to re-create Miyazaki's set. These 9 are Opera, Permanent Yellow Orange, Permanent Green 3, Cadmium Green Deep, Davys Gray, Violet Gray, Vermilion (replace the Vermilion Hue), Bright Violet (replace the Mineral Violet), and Cobalt Green Yellow Shade (replace Cobalt Green) :-) Best to all.

    this is really great. it's nice to see a "master" using a lot of different colors if that makes sense- I do like using limited palettes and I know it creates cohesion in a work but usually you see more famous folk with a focus on a very limited palette. I can tell from the fotos of miyazaki you put in your video that he's actually using a big and varied palette. thanks for sharing!

    You mixed the discontinued permanent green number 3 and the cobalt green yellow shade pretty close. However, having used the elusive violet gray that was discontinued back in the 1990s I can tell you that one looks nothing like the violet gray water color. It was much more similar to a light gray mixed with opera than what was shown here.

    I love the palette and the mixed paint you made at the end! I wander if you could maybe do a video of art stores in tokyo (not sure where you're located) that would sell holbein watercolours? I'm visiting tokyo later this year, and would love to get my hands on a holbein set... so any recommended art stores?

    The best place to go that sells a lot of supplies us the Sekaido store in Shinjyuku! But you can buy Holbein watercolors in most art stores in Japan.
