Re-Assembling The Savage/Fox Model B Frame
The time has come my friends. I am finally re-assembling the receiver for the savage/fox Model B project. Mistakes were made, fun was had. It was a long, frustrating and arduous process but I got it done. The only way to do a thing is to do it. The process is pretty much the same for a lot of these old shotguns like the Stevens, The Savage, The fox, and Springfield so hopefully this can help some of you guys looking for a video on how I got this boom stick put back together.

Consider a bigger diameter pick, then just cut the tip of with a dremel tool, drive pin backwards. Grind half a moon in an old screwdriver to make a spring compression too... I was worried you were going to spear your hand! Great video!

Thanks, that's a great idea. 🤘
You are very right about installing the mainsprings/hammers. I made a couple of slave pins about 4 in. long, from a rod the same diameter as the 2 regular pins, slightly tapered at one end and flat on the other. Once everything was lined up on the slave pin, I put the regular pin on the flat end and knocked it through with a little hammer. Much easier than a pin with such a long taper. Also. you must have some pretty strong fingers because I used the vice for just about every step. (It's what's known as being OLD !!) Thanks for the great video !

I just couldn't find many helpful videos on how to do this so I figured what the heck why not record myself struggling through it and maybe it can help some people out there. Thanks for watching.

How did you us a vice to get the main springs?
You need to clip the sear springs ends over the sears and not leave them hanging down on the receiver. As you showed it, the only pressure on the sears comes from the trigger springs, and this is not enough to make it safe.

Thank you for watching. When I decided to work on this shotgun I realized there was almost nothing on the internet to help so I figured why not make a video myself. Glad you liked it.
Thank you for this video!! I'm working on a fox model b single trigger & you've been such a big help!

Thanks for watching and I'm glad my video could help. Good luck with your project, I know how frustrating it can be.
25.32 Now you know why some gunsmiths won't even work on them I used an easy -out of a similar size to the pin ,using the tapered end . They are hardened steel , and won't break. I don't know why that washer was on the striker spring. Someone put it on , maybe because of a weak spring. They usually don't have them. A least the 2 I did did not have washers. I give you a lot of credit for your patience. and a job well done.

Thank you I appreciate the complement. When I test fired it I did get a light primer strike from the left side which is the side with that little washer.

@@thatfunkymonkey The spring is probably weak. That's why the washer was an it. Trying to increase the tension on it.These parts come up on ebay all the time. Pins are #4 - the tapered ones.The 107 and 94 ' s have straight shanks.

@@robertboreman7672 thank you for the info. I knew it was iffy when that little washer came out behind the spring.
I have rebuilt 2 311 receiver frames, They can be a real challenge -especially the striker springs,

I agree, these old shotguns are challenging but that's what makes it fun.
The nasty thing about this model is if your firing pin retainer screws back out your hammers will be blocked. I owned one that I lent my friend and that’s what happened and it cost him a shot at a Turkey. That was a long time ago. Best to put a drop of blue lock tight on those screws and make sure their is not any oil on the threads or threaded holes. My opinion only.

Tengo una 311..pero ocasionalmente las agujas se quedan atoradas y no regresan a su posición original despues de jalar los gatillos....apesar de lubricarla aveces continúan quedándose atascadas
I have a question you might be able to answer... I recently picked up a Stevens 311a 16G in a trade (guy lied about its condition, long story) and the hammers dont cock when the action is cracked open. I mean theres no feeling of spring engagement when the barrels are dropped like there should be on a break action. And the ejector is loose with no spring tension either. But when I take the stock off I can cock the hammers manually with a screwdriver and everything works perfectly (the trigger pull is actually very nice) I tried looking on the part schematic on Numrichs. Its clear the cocking plunger part #39 I think, isnt engaging the piece in the receiver that cocks the hammers. But I dont understand why because the plunger itself is working under spring tension. I dont know why those pieces arent meeting and engaging each other or what the deal is with the ejector. Ive fixed up old guns before and usually understand how to fix em but this is stumping me and making me feel stupid. Any ideas since youve handled and worked on the same basic model?

Check the cocking lever spring. It's a very thin spring that needs to be oriented in the proper way. If the spring isn't set correctly, or if it is broken, the cocking lever will not function when the cocking plunger attempts to engage. That would explain why the hammers won't cock unless you do so manually with a screw driver. If you go back to the video at 9minutes I install the cocking lever and you can see how the spring should be oriented. Hopefully this helps. Thanks for watching and good luck 🤞

It's not an ejector. It's an extractor only.
I need a rib. Mine sheared off the sites and slides off now. Any one have an idea of where to find parts. I checked ebay already

Excellent video. Thank you for doing this. One question: shouldn’t the sear spring arms be pulled on top of the sears vs laying on the frame under the sears? When I did mine, I thought they went on top, but it didn’t appear so in your video. A few other videos on this action show them on top.

You are correct. I realized after I had made the video and I went back and corrected it. Good eye my friend most people didn't even notice that little blooper lol. Thanks for watching.
As I said, great video. Maybe you can answer a little question for me. How much (if any), bend should there be on the top snap plunger rod ? If you look at the Numrich parts page, a used one looks bent, but the new one looks straight.
@thatfunkymonkey
Жыл бұрын
Mine definitely has a slight curve to it. If you pause the video at 31:03 you can see how much of a bend there is. I don't think it's supposed to be straight.
33:52 do the sears go under the hammers or in the little slit?
@thatfunkymonkey
2 жыл бұрын
Just lay them in underneath the hammers. The pin will keep them in place where they need to be. When the hammers are cocked back they will then lock up with the sears. When you pull the triggers, the sears will release the hammers. Hope this helps. It can get very confusing in there.
